NBC Wants Viewers Hopelessly Devoted to 'Grease'

We’ve all dreamt about it…walking up to the man of our dreams, cigarette in hand, skin tight black leather pants, watching his eyes bug out of his head just as we whisper “Tell me about it, stud”. Ah yes, Grease – showing good girls that it’s ok to be bad if it means landing the popular guy at your high school.

Well if you have ever found yourself groovin’ along to classics like ‘We Go Together’ and ‘Summer Lovin’ (and who hasn’t?) then NBC has got a show for you. You’re the One that I Want is an upcoming talent competition series in which America will choose the leads for a new Broadway production of Grease. The mid-season replacement will scour America for the next Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko. The winning contestants will find themselves hand-jiving on Broadway in June of 2007.

Similar to every other reality show, there will be panel of judges sharing their two cents every week. But unlike other talentNBC Wants Viewers Hopelessly Devoted to 'Grease' show judges (yes, we’re talking to you Hasselhoff), the You’re the One that I Want judges are actually qualified to evaluate this kind of talent. All the contestants will get feedback from Kathleen Marshall (a two time Tony winner and the choreographer/director of the ’07 production of Grease), Jim Jacobs (one of the original creators of Grease), and Broadway producer, David Ian.

So why Grease? Craig Plestis, a Senior VP at NBC had this to say about the classic musical:

“The winning appeal of Grease and its timeless score and storyline extends across all generations and will make for a fantastic series. Americans have grown up with these catchy tunes and appealing characters and we think they’ll love the chance to select the next dynamic duo to play Sandy and Danny.”

Assuming they get some real, genuine talent on this show, you can bet you Greased Lightning I’ll be watching. I’m actually praying this show is a huge hit. Hey, I want the chance to audition for season two when they find the next stars of Grease 2 – the Broadway musical. Beacuse really, this girl for all seasons is looking for her C-O-O-L….R-I-D-E-R.

I saw Grease 2 as a young child, and surprisingly WAY before I saw Grease. I remember enjoying Grease 2 – what did I know, I was like 8 – and I further LOVE your “cool rider” reference
