Veronica Mars Recap and Contest!!!

November 22, 2006 by

So it’s become tougher and tougher for me to find the time to write show recaps. It bums me out more than you know. Lucky for me, and you, GMMR has some ridiculously superb recappers who have been kind enough to take on the shows for me.

Such is the case with this week’s episode of Veronica Mars, which I got around to watching around 1am this morning. Julie, a VM mega fan, sent along her take on last night’s episode. And in honor of Julie’s always fantastic recaps, we are going to have a little VM giveaway.

Prize: Any one “Veronica Mars” item from the GMMR Store
To enter:
(Step 1) Leave a comment on this post and share your thoughts on what you think of Veronica Mars so far this season (you hating it, loving it, loving LoVe, loving Piz?…anything)
(Step 2) Head over to TV and Sympathy and find out the title of Julie’s post from 10/24/06 (the day she met her TV boyfriend Jason Dohring)

(Step 3) Email me (info[at]givememyremote[dot]com, Subject line: VM CONTEST) the title of Julie’s 10/24 post. Don’t forget to leave a comment first.

I’ll randomly choose a winner among all the correct entries. The winner will then be able to choose a Veronica Mars related item from the GMMR Store and I will send it along. Here’s are what you have to choose from:

Ok, now on to Julie’s recap….

Title: “Lord of the Pi’s”
Original Airdate: 11/21/06

After two truly stellar episodes, it’s pretty disappointing to see such a flat showing with this week’s episode, “Lord of the Pi’s”, particularly since it was scribed by one of my favorite Veronica Mars writers, Diane Ruggiero. Still, I felt better watching last night’s poor episode knowing that the show is already secure with its full season order.

Even so, let’s break it down. What did we learn?

Picking up from last week, we find that Logan and Veronica are still quarreling. Did she suffer amnesia and forget how he totally loved and cared for her last week? Because if so, BOO. He wants her to back away from the rape case to avoid getting hurt; she doesn’t want to listen. Guess who wins? If you guess that Logan hires someone to follow V around and protect her, you’d be right.

In other news, Veronica managed to grab a photo gig from the new Free Press editor. Her first assignment, snapping pics of bigwig board trustee Selma Hearst, goes awry when Selma disappears from her own banquet. Could it be foul play? Keith and V cast a suspicious eye on everyone involved, from Fern the waitress to Hallie the dogwalker, from Selma’s crippled husband to his overly protective manservant. In the end, it turns out that hubby dearest had his wife hidden away, blackmailing her while he waited out the days till their tenth wedding anniversary, in an attempt to gain a bigger chunk of her sizable inheritance.

While the “kidnapping” storyline failed to interest me, we did get a couple interesting developments in the Hearst rape case. For starters, Chip Diller (president of the Pi Sigs, hence the episode title), turned up stripped and shaved on a Hearst lawn one morning. When Veronica questions Dick about it, he’s helpful enough to supply the info that Chip’s assailant(s?) had left him a parting gift: an egg up his ass. Trust me, that’s far less sarcastically than it was referred to throughout the episode.

Further digging (no, not the proctological kind) reveals the egg contained the numbers 111903 in Roman numerals. Veronica, in her typical inuitive leap, reasons that they represent a date, and discovers that a girl fell from the roof of the Zeta Theta house on November 19, 2003. It wasn’t just any girl, it was Claire’s best friend, who was suffering the aftereffects of mockery and ridicule, courtesy of the Pi Sigs. But is a grudge against the Pi Sigs reason enough to fake a string of rapes?

Now, let’s be honest…who really cares about the rapes? (I’m kidding, people. Remember, as Veronica says, rape humor never gets old.) What many viewers, and the CW promo monkeys, care about is Logan and Veronica’s relationship. Right? As you can imagine, Veronica has been jumpy since last week’s rape attempt, and she doesn’t take it particularly well when she discovers that the noises she’s been hearing go bump in the night were caused by the goon Logan hired to protect her.

Confronting Logan at his hotel room, Veronica has a painful but honest argument with him about the things that are standing in their way: his desire to protect her, her will to keep putting herself in danger; his attempts to change, her stubborn resistance to see it. They seem to reach a stalemate, admitting that they love each other and shouldn’t be so hard on each other, and V says they’re okay. But, as Logan is heartbroken to learn later, they’re really not; when he watches her as she fails to pick up a call from him, the expression on his face is devastated. Why can’t she ever love him enough? How can two people simultaneously be so right and so wrong for each other?

Why must you bum me out, show? At least, from the split-second I caught for the promo of next week’s episode, it looks like Mac is finally back. Rejoice!

On a happier note, WatchVeronicaMars.net is having a raffle for a signed copy of a legitimately good VM script, for “Welcome Wagon”, the Season Three premiere. Put in your fifteen bucks for a legitimately good cause (the library DVD drive), and you might find yourself the proud owner of paper that was once manhandled by Logan, Cliff, Mercer, Dick, Lamb, Sachs, Keith, Weevil, Lucky, and Piz. Oh, and some ladies, too. Go buy some tickets!

Julie is a firm believer in “all things in moderation” — except when it comes to TV, writing, Logan Echolls, and carbonated beverages. When she’s not debating TV Boyfriends with GMMR, she’s writing for her site, TV & Sympathy, or kicking ass and taking names.

Personally, I’m really liking the season. It was easy to just start watching, but I still feel like there are little nuances I haven’t picked up on yet. Good episode, I can’t wait for next week!

This may seem like a completely random comment, but:
What show WOULDN’T be better without a little more George Michael and Maeby? I would have welcomed Veronica to Hearst by having Michael Cera bring her breakfast (after all, it IS the most important of the things you eat).

  3. Julie on November 22nd, 2006 12:26 pm

Post-it Thief, I LOVE hearing that you were able to just jump in and start watching. More people should! I think they’d like it too.

I know I was a bit hard on the episode, but it’s partly because the two before it were so great, and partly because as a longtime fan, I sometimes forget that the show IS good now, even if it’s not quite as awesome as the first season.

My thoughts-Not the best episode this season. I get pretty frustrated when Rob Thomas goes all stunt casting crazy on us. Patricia Hearst? So supposedly she’s an actress, but she was terrible last night. She delivered all of her lines the exact same way. It was nice to see Maxfield Sheffield from The Nanny though. I wish he had more to do last night!
All the kidnapping silliness aside, it was nice to see that there was a reason behind the fake rape, and it didn’t have everything to do with just a hatred for the Greek Life on campus. The actually had a reason to dislike the frats and sorority’s.
And finally, Logan’s face at the end when V didn’t pick up her phone, so crushed. I was actually mad at my favorite girl. How could she be so stupid?

  5. Sus on November 22nd, 2006 1:15 pm

Can’t read the recap yet since I won’t be watching the ep til tomorrow morning. But…my thoughts…

I’m loving the show. I love the characters, especially. I love how they show us just enough for us to know there’s a lot more going on. I just wish they’d bring more of the “background players” to the forefront. I realize Tina Majorino has another show but has Mac been in an episode since like the second one?

I didn’t think I was going to like Piz but he’s growing on me in that “nerdy but not really nerdy” type of way that he has.

I always have and always will love LoVe but I fear for them. I know it has to end but I hope it’s not to rough. *bites fingernails*

And now I’m off to email you…

  6. Chelsea on November 22nd, 2006 2:00 pm

I’m really liking this season, and I finally got one of my good friends hooked on the show.

Last night’s episode was a little boring, but next week will definitely make up for it because Mac’s finally on!

Hopefully we’ll see more of the secondary characters in the next mystery arc.

  7. Echo on November 22nd, 2006 5:04 pm

I like all the secondary characters they’ve added to the cast this season, Parker and Piz are both completely adorable in their own, very different, ways, but I would like them even better if we ever got to see them. And adding Mac to the cast, and then having the credits be the only time we see her for six weeks? Well that’s just cruel Rob Thomas.

  8. sim on November 22nd, 2006 9:30 pm

I love Kristen Bell as Veronica Mars, so I look forward to every show. Last nights episode, though, was kind of slow. I like Logan and Veronica as a couple. Piz is not her type at all – he’s too quirky. I’d like to see more Mac – her and Veronica have a great friendship chemistry.

  9. Deedee on November 23rd, 2006 11:25 am

As a die hard VM fan I have been really enjoying this season – there are some things I have really been loving: Daddy Mars’ elicit romance, Veronica’s new stomping grounds, Dick C, and the Dean.
But there are some things I am not sure about either: I like Piz, but I just don’t see him with Veronica, there’s no spark there.
Also, I have been a LoVe fan since before “Weapons of Class Destruction”, and I really don’t like how V is constantly bitching at Logan, or that Logan has been pretty whiny lately, though I do like that he is always very yummy!
Anyway, I am giddy with excitement that we have been picked up for (almost) a full season. Veronica Mars is, hands down, the smartest show on television.

  10. Sam on November 23rd, 2006 12:33 pm

I’m generally meh this season. I love the show. I LOVE the cast. But I honestly don’t care about the Hearst rapist. Maybe I’ll feel more connected with the next mystery.

  11. Mandy on November 23rd, 2006 1:55 pm

I TOTALLY agree with Deedee’s thoughts about Piz and Logan. I was crushed when Logan called Veronica and she ignored his call. Why is she going so far out of her way to ruin their relationship? It’s not in character for her.

On another note, I don’t like this season as much as I have the last two. I think it’s because of the mini-story arcs, the new opening credits and the lack of seeing all your favorite characters as much as you have in the past, which is bad because last season they were only able to be in few episodes, but they weren’t missed. I think it’s because you got to see the other characters and only didn’t see one or two at a time. This season it’s like they are all gone. Does anyone agree?

  12. Deedee on November 23rd, 2006 5:29 pm

    I agree with you Mandy!
I would love it if we saw more of our fave Neptune residents – Wallace, Dick, Weevil, and most of all, Sheriff Lamb (I’ll admit it, I have a bit of a thing).
I’m not digging the new opening credits either..they’re so…slow. I think it’s just the music I don’t like though. I like the pics, but they need to up the tempo on the song. Much edgier that way.

  13. Heather on November 25th, 2006 1:15 pm

I love Veronica Mars, I really, really do, but I am not loving this season. I feel like we are in an Alternative Universe and they are replaying the forth season of “Buffy” complete with curly hair, a dull, new leading man, a lack-luster Big Bad, and a seperation from her core group of friends. I still adore her quipiness and the twisted nature of Neptune, but many of the Mysteries of the Week have not moved along the other plots and just seem, well, dumb. I hope once the rape case is closed, Rob and his Crew will get back to their roots and reintergate Wallce and Weevil back into Veronica’s life. Again, I want to love it again, but right now I am watching out of habit rather than blind adoration.

  14. John D'arc on November 26th, 2006 4:13 pm

so what’s with the whole “LoVe / Piz = ?” thing?

    And someone’s gonna die!

  15. Lisa Jenssen on November 27th, 2006 11:09 am

I’m a huge Buffy & Angel fan and with Joss Whedon’s constant support of this show, I bought season One when I found it for sale for $20.00 at Target. I have watched that season three times already and have invested in season Two as well (watched it twice so far).

I not only TiVo season Three but am also putting them on video tape (just in case) and have started re-watching the season Three eps that have been shown so far.

My comments about this season are that I find it a bit uneven. I adore Logan but he loses his edge when he is with a woman, and I am more than a little annoyed with Veronica and her lack of trust. She trusts when it suits her, and not when someone else needs her to – even if just for a little while.

I like Piz, but we need to know a bit more about him. I don’t see him as a good match for Veronica – too milquetoast for her – she’d walk all over him in a heartbeat. I miss Mac and Wallace being more prevelant in the series.

I’m interested in the solving of the rapes, but not obsessed as I was with the season One mystery. Tuesdays show will be interesting to see how they resolve the mystery and who dies, but I am curious if this time Logan will end it with Veronica, it’s his turn to say ‘enough’ rather than Veronica having all the power. Time for Veronica to realize what she loses when he says it is over for them.

  16. kilwiggle7 on November 27th, 2006 5:53 pm

i just started watching VM this season and i was able to pick it all up really easily. it helps that i went and bought the first two seasons on DVD so that i could catch up and find out what i had missed. i have gotten a couple other friends hooked on the show as well, as a result. i love LoVe. i’m really scared for the 4th season renewal- i want one so bad, but i’m afraid… but i like this season!

  17. Lisa Jenssen on November 29th, 2006 9:29 am

I’m so proud – Logan did the deed – and Ronnie was pretty crushed, though she did not show it to her friends, she’s keeping it private which signals just how hurt she is. Logan still cares so damn much, Ronnie will have to come to her senses to get him back. But, please, no Piz, he’s too – I don’t know – out there for Veronica. Also, no chemistry like LoVe have – you can’t beat chemistry.
