GMMR's TV Golden Globe Picks - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

GMMR’s TV Golden Globe Picks

January 15, 2007 by

Tonight’s the night. The 64th Annual Golden Globes Awards. My favorite award show of the season because not only does it bring together celebs from television and film but they serve booze. Yes, I keep mentioning this aspect of the show, but there have been drunken acceptance speeches before so….fingers crossed.

Anyway, it’s a big day in TV, and I’ll be here LIVE blogging during the Golden Globes and revealing the winners as they are announced. Make sure you swing by and leave your comments. Also, I’ve opened up a 2007 Golden Globes thread within the GMMR Forums, so you all can chit chat about the winners, the losers, and most importantly who is wearing what. If you think you might be interested in being part of the GMMR Forums Golden Globes event, would you mind leaving me a comment and letting me know? Thanks 🙂

BEST TV DRAMA SERIES
24
Big Love
Grey’s Anatomy
Heroes
Lost

I think this is going to be “Grey’s” year at the Golden Globes. “Grey’s Anatomy” was really just hitting its stride at the time of last year’s GG’s and I think the voters will recognize that despite its commercial success, “Grey’s Anatomy” has still maintained the quality that made it so popular in the first place.

BEST COMEDY SERIES
Ugly Betty
Weeds
Entourage
The Office
Desperate Housewives

As much as I would like to think that “The Office” has this one wrapped up, I’m not so sure. I think the Dunder Mifflinites are up against some tough competition from their friends over at Mode. Remember, the Golden Globes are given away by the Hollywood Foreign Press, and “Ugly Betty” is a worldwide phenomenon. But as much as I love “Ugly Betty”, I put this one in the dramedy category. “The Office” is the clear winner to me.

BEST DRAMA ACTOR
Patrick Dempsey, Grey’s Anatomy
Keifer Sutherland, 24
Bill Paxton, Big Love
Hugh Laurie, House
Michael C. Hall, Dexter

I can’t say that I have ever seen “Dexter”, but I know from those who have seen it how phenomenal it is. The Globes are known for being open to the new kid on the block, so with Michael C. Hall it’s a win-win (win) as he’s a proven veteran (Six Feet Under) with a brand new, highly acclaimed show.

BEST DRAMA ACTRESS
Patricia Arquette, Medium
Evangeline Lily, Lost
Edie Falco, The Sopranos
Ellen Pompeo, Grey’s Anatomy
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

This one is a bit of a toss up. I was surprised to see Evangeline Lily make the cut (but then again I think Evangeline was a bit surprised herself). I’ve decided to go with Kyra on this one. The Golden Globe voters know of her strong movie career, and I think that it’s about time her role on “The Closer” gets the awards it deserves.

BEST COMEDY ACTOR
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Steve Carell, The Office
Jason Lee, My Name is Earl
Zach Braff, Scrubs
Tony Shaloub, Monk

I think this is the toughest TV category we are going to get. I’m going with Steve Carell because well, he’s Steve Carell. But seeing that Carell won last year, my gut tells me that Alex Bladwin will walk away with the award this year. But then again, maybe the Hollywood Foreign Press would vote for Steve just to ensure that there show gets some laughs…I mean, last year’s speech can’t be topped, can it?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (Drama/Comedy/Made for TV)
Thomas Haden Church, Broken Trail
Jeremy Irons, Elizabeth I
Justin Kirk, Weeds
Masi Oka, Heroes
Jeremy Piven, Entourage

I personally would like to see this one go to Masi Oka as he’s the breakout star of “Heroes”. And I’m never against The Pivs taking home an award for his inspired portrayal of Ari Gold. But I’m going to go with Jeremy Irons on this one. Why? He has an accent and he’s in a film based on history. Boring, but I think he’ll take home the award.

BEST COMEDY ACTRESS
America Ferrera, Ugly Betty
Marcia Cross, Desperate Housewives
Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives
Julie Louis-Dreyfuss, New Adventure of Old Christine
Mary Louise Parker, Weeds

This is one category that I think it a shoe in. America Ferrara completely transforms herself when in character as Betty Suarez. So much so that it’s actually distracting when I see America minus the bushy eyebrows, braces and hideous glasses.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (Drama/Comedy/Made for TV)
Emily Blunt, Gideon’s Daughter
Toni Collette, Tsunami: The Aftermath
Katherine Heigl, Grey’s Anatomy
Sarah Paulson, Studio 60
Elizabeth Perkins, Weeds

This is one category that I feel strongly about because I’ve actually seen all the shows/movies nominated. I have to go with Katherine Heigl on this one. Her portrayal of the grieving Izzie on last season’s “Grey’s Anatomy” was simply fantastic. And I just have to say that although I j’adore Toni Collette, her role in “Tsunami: The Aftermath” didn’t blow me away. I was surprised to see her in this category.

BEST MINI-SERIES or MADE FOR TV MOVIE
Bleak House
Broken Trail
Elizabeth I
Mrs. Harris
Prime Suspect: The Final Act

Eeny meeny minie moe, and the award goes to….”Mrs. Harris”. Yeah, haven’t seen any of these and I probably never would. But it stars Annette Bening who I find mildly entertaining, so why the hell not.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR (Mini-Series or Made for TV)
André Braugher – Thief (FX)
Robert Duvall – Broken Trail (AMC)
Michael Ealy – Sleeper Cell: American Terror (SHOWTIME)
Chiwetel Ejiofor – Tsunami, The Aftermath (HBO)
Ben Kingsley – Mrs. Harris (HBO)
Bill Nighy – Gideon’s Daughter (BBC)
Matthew Perry – The Ron Clark Story (TNT)

Yeah, not too qualified to vote in this category as I’ve only seen “Tsunami” and “The Ron Clark Story”. I can say first hand that Chiwetel Ejifor’s performance of a father searching for his little girl during the dark days following the Tsunami was stunning. So yeah, I’m going with him.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS (Mini-Series or Made for TV)
Gillian Anderson – Bleak House
Annette Bening – Mrs. Harris
Helen Mirren – Elizabeth I
Helen Mirren – Prime Suspect: The Final Act
Sophie Okonedo – Tsunami, The Aftermath

What evs…I don’t have to have seen all of these films to know in my heart of hearts that Sophie Okonedo should walk away with this one. Seriously, have you SEEN her in this role. It was ugly, dark, beautiful, and any and all adjectives that would lead one to believe that my heart was ripped out of my chest and stomped on for a bit before being placed back. Bravo Sophie…bravo.

wow!! you’ve got some crazy pics! first of all, no love for 24? i think it’s safe to say they’re the favorites coming off of two huge emmy wins. if grey’s wins for best drama, i might have to impale myself in the head with my remote.

i do agree with office though! and i’d like to see edie falco win for soaps cause she’s awesome. it’s just astounding to me that mr. gandolfini didn’t get nominated and bill paxton did. big love is atrocious.

and what’s with ER not getting a single nom? i’m confused.

I’m conflicted. The Golden Globe awards is going to be on at the same time as 24! I suppose i’ll just dvr the Golden Globes b/c as of right now 24 takes priority.

Where i would differ from you, GMMR…b/c otherwise we agree or i haven’t seen the show (or, more specifically, the miniseries):

    BEST TV DRAMA SERIES
    24
    Big Love
    Grey’s Anatomy
    Heroes
    Lost

    BEST DRAMA ACTOR
    Patrick Dempsey, Grey’s Anatomy
    Keifer Sutherland, 24
    Bill Paxton, Big Love
    Hugh Laurie, House
    Michael C. Hall, Dexter

I’m totally conflicted (again) b/c i absolutely LOVE Laurie and i LOVE Sutherland. They’re both so awesome! So if either one of them wins this, i will be so happy! Something tells me Laurie is going to take this one, but i’ll be happy if Sutherland does, too.

I watch Dexter and I must say Michael C. Hall is amazing as him. Such a great show (lot’s of blood though :))

Kiefer Sutherland has already won his share of awards — let Dexter get some recognition!

But I do think 24 should win something.

As for movies, which you didn’t mention, I hope Sacha Baron Cohen wins every comedy category.

Guys remember….I’m a “24” newbie, so I’m not inclined to choose it for big wins since I don’t watch it. I’m short sighted like that…LOL

Keep in mind, The Office is an international phenomenon too with several countries making versions, though maybe not to the extent Ugly Betty is.

I feel like I watch so much TV, but these awards make me realize how much I don’t watch, like 24, Lost, Big Love, Desperate Housewives, Weeds, Dexter, Medium, The Closer, Earl, Scrubs, Monk, Old Christine, Ugly Betty.

Monk better not win anything, at least not at the expense of The Office, that’s all I’m saying.

Usually, when I really want something to win, it doesn’t. However, 2006 wound up being a good year for turning things around (The Office at the Emmys, the Democrats in the House and the Senate). Let’s hope that this reversal holds tonight. I love seeing my “Office” people so happy!

I like your picks too GMMR except, again, the 24 thing. I really hope it wins best drama, much deserved I think and I like Keiffer for best male actor although to be fair, I haven’t seen Dexter, Big Love or House sooo… I know, I know I should watch House, I’ll have to get the DVDs this summer. Ugly Betty, I still can’t get into, and I’ve tried, so I have to side with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss for Best Actress Comedy, I think she’s hilarious. Best Comedy Actor will be a nail-biter for sure but I’m rooting for Carell all the way! Boobs!!

We will make you into a 24 believer yet, GMMR. The show is so addicting and I have to say that I would be very surprised if they don’t get any wins.

I have to agree with Brian about The Office. There are other countries including Germany and France making versions of the show and of course, I’m hoping it takes the win.

To be fair, I haven’t seen Tsunami, The Aftermath so I can’t really compare your pick for Best Actor in a miniseries made for TV, but I really think that Michael Ealy was amazing in his role as Darwyn in Sleeper Cell and I’ll be routing for him.
