Bravo Acquires TWOP (Television Without Pity)

March 13, 2007 by

NBC owned Bravo has just acquired one of television’s most popular website, TelevisionWithoutPity.com for an undisclosed sum of money. Here’s an excerpt from the official statement from TWOP:

“Officially, TWoP will be under the Bravo umbrella going forward — part of Bravo’s larger push into online content, which already includes OUTzoneTV.com, BrilliantButCancelled.com, and getTRIO.com.”
………..

“You’re probably asking yourselves, “What does this mean? How can TWoP still be TWoP if it’s owned by a network?” Well, maybe you’re asking yourselves who ate the last cookie, but while we can’t help you with that last question, we can shed some light on the first two.

For starters, it means that TWoP will still be TWoP — that is to say, we’ll be offering the same no-holds-barred commentary and critique we always have. Our new bosses dig what we do, and after all, they were the ones who launched BrilliantButCancelled, the mid-season death watch which predicts the early demise of all the networks’ new shows. So, we’ll continue taking shots at Aaron Sorkin, and we’ll still be covering shows on FOX and CBS and so on.

But it also means that TWoP can get even TWoPpier — partnering with Bravo will give us the opportunity to expand our coverage, in all directions. We can cover more shows, and we can cover shows (and TV in general) in different ways — trend stories, blogs, exclusive interviews, audio and video content. We’ll still provide snarky recaps, and you’ll still be able to visit the virtual water-cooler of the forums, but you can also look forward to podcasts, episode extras, and all sorts of other neat stuff.”

Ohhh, this is some INTERESTING news. Does anyone out there REALLY believe that TWOP is going to stay unbiased and impartial? I think not. They say they are going to get access to more exclusive content and interviews? Great, does that mean we get more Real Housewives of Orange County..because really, we get more of that show and world peace won’t be too far behind.

I’ll be watching this one closely to see how it all plays out.

Listen, I enjoy TWOP (some of the time). Their recaps are some of the best online. Their forums are the most frequented. Their leadership is questionable, at least those picked to moderate their infamous message boards. The mods have been known to expolit their “snark” into a good ‘ol fashioned power trip to the point you feel like you are being punished. Every time I see a mod chastising the readers, I just want to hug them because it’s obvious their mothers didn’t do it enough when they were young. So what does this have to do with Bravo’s acquisition of TWOP? Nothing, I’m just bitching for the sake of bitching. Ah, the beauty of your own blog.

I saw that too GMMR. I couldn’t believe it. Impartial? I highly doubt it now, but hey it was fun while it lasted. :)

Haha…I hadn’t heard this but love what you said about the mods over there…thank you…

This just means I’ll be begging you and Jo even more for BSG recaps and updates.
(I love TWOP, and hope against hope it doesn’t change.)

That’s the site whose recaps take as long to read as to watch the whole episode, right? Yeah, I never go there.

That site had great (snarky) recaps but the forums were always filled with power tripping megalomaniacs, usually in the form of the mods. I say good riddance.

I love the people that chat over on TwoP at the Office forums, but seriously, those mods can take a chill pill Pam. I do like that they regulate staying on topic of the show, but I don’t like being talked at like a child. Maybe being snarky is a requisite for becoming a mod over there.

Interesting… I’m a regular lurker over there, but have never felt the need to post, partly because of the attitude the mods seem to have.

I have, however, become a spoiler junkie. Some of the spec is hilarious.

Oh, TWoP. How I loved it when the Office forums weren’t moderated by the ego-trippers. Apparently getting extremely involved in a reality show–i.e. Amazing Race–by a mod is totally acceptable, but getting involved in a scripted show–i.e. the Office–is pathetic and totally irrational. I love how you get “in trouble” if you try to apologize to someone when they took something you said the wrong way, but the mods are able to treat people like crap willy nilly. Needless to say, I’m not at TWoP that much anymore.

So, GMMR. Does this mean that the GMMR forums will turn into the new place to be? Because I’m totally there.

I’ve never been to the forums over there, but I had to check them out after I read the comments here. After only a couple minutes over there, I could tell I would hate those boards :-) . Few things irritate me more than being chastised by people in fake authority, so the condescending attitude would get to me very quickly. No loss for me, I guess!

I read the recaps over at twop but I never go in the forums. I used to read the Lost recap but the person who does it seems like he/she hates the show. Every other line is an insult. I think if they’re going to have a recapper for the show then they should at least pick someone who likes the show.

My problem with the TWoP forums is that they tend to get dominated by groups who are pro or con some aspect of the show (a ship or actor/character normally) and the forum ends up revolving around just that one aspect of a show.

I agree that the mods are ALWAYS on a power trip, and that is the thing that turns me off the most. I still post there, but not as much as I used to. I can’t say I completely hate it because I did meet a lot of great people, but we left and took it over to LJ where you are free to speak your mind without being banned. I mean seriously…banned? Get over yourselves!

The site did also introduce me to other great sites such as this one, but it was only because of the cool people in the forums, not because of the site or its power tripping mods. Wow, it really does feel good to vent about that place. Thanks!

I threw up a little bit in my mouth – youtube sold, myspace sold, del.icio.us sold, now TWOP? Is there no democratic web medium that won’t sell out? Heartless capitalist bastards!
