Will THE OFFICE be One Hour Long? (TWSS)

Thankfully Ashton Kutcher has nothing to do with CNNMoney.com, because if he did I would surely think this was an elaborate punk.  In a great article about the life and career of NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker it is mentioned that Zucker and Kevin Reilly are considering expanding THE OFFICE to one hour each week?!  Seriously, the best news I’ve heard all day.

At NBC’s “upfront” presentation to advertisers on May 14, Zucker says he expects NBC to unveil five new programs – three dramas, one comedy, and one reality show – for its fall schedule. Zucker and Reilly are considering stretching The Office to an hour and canceling the original Law & Order.  (Source)

Now before we start planning a party (and it would be a Scranton party, cause a Scranton party don’t stop) let me just say that as you can see from the quote, Zucker & Reilly are “considering” this move.  Nothing is set in stone.  But come on already….do you think they would float it out there if there wasn’t something to it?

It was this time last year that we were delivering our petition to supersize the season finale of THE OFFICE to NBC.  It was our way of begging them to expand the show to 40 minutes.  And yet in the third season not only did we have numerous supersized episode, but we are treated to two hour long eps (‘ A Benihana Christmas’ and the upcoming season finale).  Also with the number of deleted scenes that appear on NBC.com during the week following a new episode, it’s clear that THE OFFICE has more than just a half hour program in there.

I’m personally thrilled with this news.  Moderating a live OFFICE chat every week I can tell you that just when the show really gets going it feels like it’s almost over. I know that there are going to be purists out there saying that they should leave THE OFFICE as is.  I want to go on the record to say I’m NOT a purist.  If I can get one hour of my favorite show then gimme, gimme, gimme!

I hope that Zucker and Reilly make this happen.  I’m not going to go crazy and start a petition or anything, but leave a comment and let them know that we want…no need THE OFFICE to be an hour each week.

Thanks to eyegypt for the tip

    That’s what I’m talkin’ about!!!

    It’d be so amazing!

Too bad Law & Order may be cancelled, its a great show, but since Jerry Orbach died it hasn’t been the same.

I think that it would be a wise decision, the ratings for all of the one-hour episodes are so good, and it would just be amazing to have that one hour EVERY WEEK!!!! DO ITTTT!!!! 🙂 🙂

GMMR – you make me so happy when you post this stuff.

I think this makes perfect sense. As you said the show already expands to 40+ minutes throughout the season. From what I’ve read it takes Greg Daniels and team a lot of time to get the episode to 22 minutes. Wouldn’t it be easier on them to not have to edit so much? I’m all about making it easier for them.

Make the office one hour each week and I promise to stop complaining that the writers are taking too long to put jim and pam together.

  4. jenintx on April 30th, 2007 7:26 pm

As terrific as this idea is, if it happens, I hope they use it to extend the storylines of some of the supporting cast(like Creed in last week’s episodes) I love Michael, but I’m not sure I can handle an hour’s worth of his antics every week. We need to learn more about Kevin, Oscar, Meredith, ect… heck maybe some warehouse people’s stories?

    Hey GMMR,
I’ve been reading your blog for over a year now and I truley love it; it’s funny, intelligent, informed, and entertaining. I believe it was a google search for “The Office” that brought me to your sight and I’ve been checking in regularly ever since, but I’ve never posted a comment. This story however, is bringing me out of hiding! Please, please, please NBC and all the powers that be there make The Office a whole hour! Okay, I’m done begging 🙂 Keep up the good work GMMR!

  6. eyegypt on April 30th, 2007 7:33 pm

Hell yeah! Make it an hour.

    PS – you’re welcome.

    A warm welcome to Pate!!!

  8. Emily on April 30th, 2007 7:56 pm

Thanks GMMR. This potential of double-the-Office next season has turned this sad, sad Monday a little happier!

At the expense of Law and Order – I wouldn’t want The Office to be extended to an hour. Maybe if it were another show cut back, like Deal or No Deal that already runs way way too much. Why don’t they just have it at 45 minutes and run another 45 minute show back to back and have those shows always be supersized? The Office extended to an hour would also mean more commercials airing during that time. How ever much more time they give it, it will still be never enough. Maybe with longer episodes, they won’t have as many episodes. Why not have more 30 minute episodes and extend the season instead of having all these repeats?

  10. Martha on April 30th, 2007 8:16 pm

man, I can’t agree enough. I always feel like The Office is over just when its getting started!!

  11. Flutie on April 30th, 2007 8:21 pm

I wouldn’t mind them stretching it out, as long as they can maintain it throughout the full hour. Some of the extended episodes (only a couple) seemed to drag when the extra length was added.

Sooooo thrilled about this…just peed a little.

  14. b on April 30th, 2007 9:15 pm

yes please! i would be oh so happy with an hour of the office. think of all the high-larious scenes with creed, meredith, and countless others that are deleted b/c there’s just not enough time. this could be good-really good.

  15. Cynthia on April 30th, 2007 9:16 pm

Yay! Some of their best episodes are longer (aka Benihana’s Christmas) and Lord knows geniuses should have all the time in the world to work their magic. I’m just sorry I can’t watch it 24/7. ; ) An hour a week would definately be amazing!
P.S. Why not do a petition? I’d sign it.

  16. mg714 on April 30th, 2007 9:24 pm

I practically screamed out loud in happiness when I saw this! I know it’s not for sure yet, but I would be so happy if this happened. My favorite episodes have been the hour long episodes – Casino Night and Benihana Christmas – and when they showed Traveling Salesmen and The Return together as an hour episode – I liked those two episodes even more. As great as The Office already is, an hour each week would make it even greater!

Also, with the indication that there are just five new programs that will be on the fall schedule, I also hope that means FNL is making a return for a second season. As much of a bad rap NBC gets, it truly is my favorite of the four big networks. They have the best shows overall and absolutely the best comedy (The Office) and best drama (FNL) on the air right now. I really wish more people would realize that and start watching.

  17. Amy on April 30th, 2007 9:33 pm

This can’t be true because it makes too much sense!! I always feel like it is way too short especially when I can’t help myself by watching all the promos and previews… With the amount of deleted scenes they have each week, you know that they already have an hours worth of good stuff. Do TV executives really make such logical decisions?? Here’s another good one…Pam and Jim getting together will not kill the show. 🙂

  18. Jo on April 30th, 2007 11:03 pm

oh my word. an hour long Office would be like Christmas, July 4th and Memorial Day rolled into one with little Canada Day sprinkles on top awesomeness.

  19. Erica on April 30th, 2007 11:08 pm

I too have been lurking around (and loving!) your site for a few months now without ever leaving a comment… but felt it was time! Hooray for potentially longer Office episodes!!

  20. betty on April 30th, 2007 11:14 pm

If everyone else is saying Hi, then I might as well too. GMMR is my home page and I’m here all the time, but I have never left a comment. I wasn’t a fan of the office until I came here, but i figured if you really liked it then maybe i should give it another shot. not it’s one of my favorites.

i hope the show is one hour long next season. that means more time in buddy chat. i’m there too but i don’t contribute but maybe i will this week.

  21. HXB on May 1st, 2007 1:20 am

    Hey GMMR,

I’m also a first-time poster (love your site!). NBC, pleeeeeease make The Office longer!! It would make the fans happy, and just think of all the extra advertising dollars!

Also, maybe you can do a “where is he now” episode on Roy? Just a suggestion…

  22. Abby on May 1st, 2007 7:49 am

    Yes, please!

  23. LT on May 1st, 2007 8:13 am

I’m absolutely in support of an hour long Office!!! The writers are geniuses. They can totally pull off an hour long show each week that is completely enertaining. The expressions and facial features they zoom in on each week cause them to have to delete some of the funniest scenes. This way they wouldn’t have to get rid of anything.

  24. Clare on May 1st, 2007 9:09 am

    Bring it.

  25. Megan on May 1st, 2007 9:38 am

1 Hour every week….that’s the best “possibility” I’ve heard all week. I agree with Clare—“Bring it.”

  26. Brad on May 1st, 2007 11:46 am

I’d take a full hour of The Office quicker than you can take money out of a fake “going away” card. 🙂

  27. spacyz on May 1st, 2007 1:21 pm

That would make my year. The supersized and hour episodes are always the best ones because they can involve all of the characters, and the deleted scenes are usually terrific and should have been included.

  28. Philiana on May 1st, 2007 1:53 pm

I agree with everything you said. Once the show begins, it feels like two minutes later, it’s already ending! I feel like a lot more could be accomplished with an hour show (aka 40-43 minutes). I hope they move forward with it. One of the best ideas.

  29. HealthcareHottie on May 1st, 2007 2:45 pm

I was just watching the deleted scenes from the Drug Testing episode on my DVD last night. There must have been a solid 10 minutes of extra footage, all of which was fantastic.

I was thinking how cool it would have been to have those scenes fit into the episode that aired, in the appropriate places, and ending with the Vance Refrigeration guys throwing the joint in the parking lot and saying, “Let’s get a pizza.” It would have been the perfect closing to that episode. As much as I love Jim, I always felt that ending on his talking head seemed like they cut something off abruptly.

That’s just one example, but there are so many episodes that we can point to and say the same thing. Please NBC, get rid of Earl and give The Office a full hour. The fans would be so grateful.

I don’t think that it will be at the expense of Law & Order, the two shows are not on the same night, so they don’t compete for air time. NBC is probably toying with the idea of cancelling that show regardless b/c the other Law & Order shows are doing much better than the original and it’s been on for years.
