Gilmore Girls Recap: Lorelai? Lorelai?

May 3, 2007 by

Whirl was kind enough to send along her recap of this week’s Gilmore Girls the other day, but I’m the idiot who never posted it.  I’m sorry to all of you and to Whirl.  This being one of the last episodes ever, I wanted to make sure I posted it…even if it was a little late.

Title: “Lorelai? Lorelai?”
Original Airdate: May 1, 2007
GMMR Recapper: Whirl

Let me start off by saying this: Hallelujah! Gilmore Girls is back. I know this season has been hard to watch for a lot of people, and I know that a lot of fans had plain old given up. Admittedly I would have stopped watching too if I wasn’t recapping the show. Sure there is only a handful of episodes left (in the season, of maybe in total) but I think they have finally gotten into the swing of things down in that writing room. Thank God for that.

Rory starts off the night with the weirdest dream sequence in history. First she’s back at Chilton, only to have the dean come in and kick her out. Then she’s back home but Lorelai abandons her to head off to Hawaii because she “needs a break”. Lastly Doyle and Paris are living with their children in her house and giving her money. Why? Rory works as a garbage collector. I get it’s supposed to be a nightmare but I bet Rory has more rational dreams then this.

At Friday night dinner Richard and Emily offer Rory use of their apartment on the Upper East Side (the one they just happen to be buying) while she works at the Times. She then drops the bomb that she got turned down for the internship surprising everyone, especially her mother. Rory passes it off as no big deal but when she’s turn down by another paper she tries to get that job at the Providence back. Unlucky for her they gave it to someone else. What’s Miss Perfect to do?

Meanwhile Lorelai seems to be back in a “groove” with Luke. She comes in for coffee one morning to see him wearing the hat she gave him back in the day. She analyses this with Sookie, wishing that there was something she could do to recuperate his actions of friendship. How about proclaim your love? I think that would work.

Lorelai gets home to find Rory hiding under the covers, and I mean that in the literal sense. She’s convinced she just bombed one of her finals, she doesn’t have a job and it’s all her mother’s fault. Silly Lor told Rory that she could do whatever she wanted in this world. More then anything Rory just feels bad about disappointing everyone, but Lor promises her daughter that she could never disappoint her. How about when she stole a boat and dropped out of Yale? Ring a bell? Anyone?

Anyway Lane’s in this episode and it brings me no end of happiness. She seems to have this mother of twin’s thing down pat. I doubt, however, that her body could look that good so soon after giving birth. Zach gets an offer to be the lead guitarist of a band called Vapor Rub, which seems to be a big deal. It’s a two-month tour and its okay for Lane and the boys to go with him. Everyone’s super stocked about it until Lane realizes that there is no way she could do life on the road with the twins. She breaks the news to Zach, who is an understanding husband and promises to bow out of the tour. Lane insists that he go on tour and that she’ll manage while he’s gone. Zach is amazed at what a cool wife he got. Interesting how the youngest couple on the show seems to have it the most together.

Lorelai takes Rory to Luke’s diner for some cheering up but she’s not really in the mood for it. She perks up a bit when Logan calls; she misses her man who’s busy making connections in California. Meanwhile Lorelai and Luke make small talk about his boat trip with April and the big Karaoke night that’s going on in town that night. Lorelai sort of invites Luke along and he sort of decline/accepts. It’s very cute and awkward.

Unfortunately there is bad news on the horizon for my future husband Luke. April got an invitation to a very prestigious science camp over the summer, so it’s a once in a lifetime experience. Still she doesn’t want to miss out on the boat trip with her Dad. He tells her its fine though really he seems kind of crushed. You know, Rory and April are both geniuses…could you imagine the brainchild Luke and Lorelai would create? I think they should have children together merely for the good of the human race.

It’s Karoke night so the people of Star’s Hollow are throwing it down. Babette and Miss Patty have a cabaret act going and Kirk sings a mean Boy George. Lorelai gets suckered into singing by Rory, who insists that she’ll go into a dark depression if she doesn’t hear her mother sing. Therefore Lorelai liquors up something fierce and heads to the stage to sing “I Will Always Love You”, think more Dolly Parton and less Whitney Houston.

Now the song starts out playful and funny, that is until Luke walks in the makes eye contact with his lost ladylove. Firstly Lorelai gets rather embarrassed but seems to have only eyes for Luke as she starts baring her soul with the song. Most of the ladies start to realize what’s going on and so does Luke who nods his head to Lor in understanding. It’s so believable my heart starts breaking a little bit. After the song is over Lorelai runs off the stage and Luke seems to smile into his beer.

The next morning Zach hands Luke his regular black hat, which was missing in action. So that’s why Luke was wearing the blue one Lorelai gave him. Still Luke keeps on the blue Lor hat and sticks the other one in his back pocket, again with that thoughtful smile on his face.

Meanwhile Lorelai is watching a movie on the evil Christopher big screen TV when the doorbell rings. It’s yummy Logan and he’s here to see Lorelai. He wants her to know he got an offer to be a partner in an up and coming internet firm business thingy. I don’t understand any of it but its good news. Lor promises Logan that she’s fine with him and that he doesn’t need to keep proving himself to her. Actually he does because he is there with a purpose; he wants Rory’s mother’s permission to ask for her hand in marriage. Poor Lor is just stunned and we fade to black.

Tune In Next Week:  With an ending like that you just know next week’s is going to be great.

Also: Feel free to head over to www.cwtv.com. On their Gilmore site they have a tour of Star’s Hollow online with Kirk as your guide. I don’t know about you guys but the more of the K-Man I can get the better.

Being born and raised amongst the igloos of Canada shaped Whirl’s love of hockey, beer and the warmth of the television screen. Though she refuses to wear spandex she has sworn to use her powers of sarcasm for the greater good of man kind, and disguises herself daily as a mild mannered office clerk. Oh yeah, and she’s not too bad at Trivial Pursuit. Seriously. Seriously.

“Lor promises her daughter that she could never disappoint her. How about when she stole a boat and dropped out of Yale? Ring a bell? Anyone?”

Yeah, my answer to that was, “Yeah, what about when she slept with Dean, the married guy?” 😉

I really loved this episode. I will boohoo into a gigantic bowl of ice cream if this is the last season. I know that’s sort of where the story is flowing and it would be appropriate but…noooo!!!

Gaahhh! Ok, so I just read that it was cancelled. Excuse me while I go call my friends Ben & Jerry. 🙁

Sus, I was thinking the exact same thing when she said that. She was clearly disappointed when she found Rory and Dean and what about when Rory moved in with her grandparents? Lor was very disappointed then. Maybe by never disappoint me she was only referring to Rory’s career….

I just read that this will in fact be the last season as well. I am so sad too. I have watched this show since the beginning and I love it. The great thing about it, though, is with seven seasons you can watch it all over again on dvd and not feel like you just saw that episode. Its such a great series and it is still great in rewatching.

    Good bye Stars hollow 🙁
