Zac Efron – High School Jailbait

July 10, 2007 by

Zac Efron

Zac Efron, High School Musical and HairsprayZac Efron wasn’t a big star during my high school years. Hell, he was a toddler at the time. But had Zac been around during my formative years he would have been my #1 crush – no doubt about it. He’s cute, funny, he’s got those piercing blue eyes and most importantly the boy can sing (a quality that still gets me to this day)…oh and he has just enough sexual ambiguity that I would have instantly fallen head over heels (I always did love the gay boys). But Zac wasn’t around, and now he’s just too young for me to properly admire without feeling all weird and creepy.

Zac made a name for himself with the tweens starring in the smash hit HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL. On July 20th he can be seen in the film adaptation of the Broadway hit HAIRSPRAY alongside John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Latifah.

Check out Zac singing a soon to be hit song from HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 premiering August 17th on the Disney Channel.

P.S. I’ve never seen the original HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL. Is it really worth checking out? I’ve heard all the hype, but I can’t say that I spend much time on The Disney Channel (well, when I’m not babysitting my nieces – don’t get me wrong I’ve seen my fair share of JoJo’s Circus, but it’s not by choice).

Thanks to www.zefron.com for the pics.

GMMR. Please rent High School Musical. It’s cute. the music is super catchy. The plot is slightly predictable, but not so cliched that it’s annoying. It’s a nice coming of age story, definitely Disney-fied, but worth watching. I’m stoked for the sequel.

Oh, you should definitely watch the original. I randomly turned it on one night last summer and was hooked. It’s just so damn catchy!

I disagree with Jo a bit – the plot is very predictable and VERY cliched, and it’s poorly acted. I can see why it’s a hit with a younger crowd and some of the sequences were catchy but I just don’t understand the hype.

That said – Zac Efron is totally channeling a young Cassidy brother or something.

Zac Efron is a cutie for sure… but there is something creepy about him that rubs me the wrong way. I think its his helmet hair. I don’t know, its something, though.

Yeah you should watch it. As cheesy as it is, the songs are pretty cool. People would be lying if they said they hated the songs.

I’m glad that they’re going to use Zac’s real voice for the second movie because I agree, he’s a good singer.

I’ve never seen High School Musical all the way through; I got kind of bored.

But I just watched a special on Hairspray and the making of the movie, and my jaw seriously fell to the floor when I realized he was in it! He looks amazing as Link Larkin, with shorter hair and a very flattering wardrobe.

Kath, I really think that you should watch it. It’s a Disney-Channel movie for sure, but it’s actually really cute. My boyfriend actually enjoyed it just as much as me, and that’s saying something. The movie is really not all that long, so I’d say it’d be worth it to at least watch and see what the hype is about, and if you don’t like it you really didn’t waste all that much time!

I made fun of my older sister for watching HSM, and then I found out that my big manly brother in law liked it too. Granted, they both watched it initially with my 4 year old niece and she made them watch it every night for a month, so they had to like it then. I spent Thanksgiving with them, and learned to enjoy the movie, more for the fun upbeat music than for the actual plot. For Christmas, I bought tickets for my sister, niece and i to go see the HSM concert and in my 25 years, i don’t think i have ever been to a more fun concert. It was so much fun.

I would totally watch HSM for the fun of it, remembering your own high school years, and forgetting about the predictable plot etc. Enjoy it for its entertainment value alone. Oh,and be sure to let us know what you think!

I took my 6-year-old to a local theater presentation of High School Musical. Neither one of us had ever seen the Disney movie, but with all the marketing and whatnot, she was hooked. The stage version was cute and she loved the songs, so I bought her the soundtrack and later bought the DVD. The songs get stuck in your head, but they are pretty cute. I’ll confess to listening to the CD even when my daughter isn’t around. ๐Ÿ™‚ I give props to the Disney Channel for keeping High School Musical 2 on TV rather than making it a theatrical release. Then again, they’ll suck more people in this way and make tons of money on marketing products. Seriously, my daughter wanted me to buy her High School Musical underwear! I haven’t seen people this crazy since New Kids!

When I watched HSM I was torn between wanting to laugh my head off and wanting to claw my eyes out. So I’d guess it’s a lot like Age of Love. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think you should watch it just for the sake of being able to say, “Hey I watched it.” That’s why I did.

I’m not a Zac Efron fan. I’m a little disappointed he was cast in Hairspray. I know he can sing but I just don’t dig him. Still WAY excited about the movie, though. I pre-ordered the soundtrack from iTunes. ๐Ÿ˜€

I agree that High School Musical was cute – it’s kind of a take off of Grease a little bit. It is pretty cheesy but my guilty TV pleasures include some of those Disney shows so I found the movie enjoyable!

I wonder why they didn’t use Zac Efron’s real singing voice in the movie though? It’s good that he will actually be singing in the second one (and in Hairspray).

Kath, I just watched it last weekend, at the urging of my high-school cousin. She billed it to me as “Grease for a younger generation.” Um, it’s no Grease. After sitting through it, bored, I’m baffled as to why it’s such a hit. You should watch it, if you like Efron, but don’t set your expectations too high or you’ll be sorely disappointed.

    He’s very… orange.

Lighten up people. If you are posting on GMMR, chances are, you are not in the target demographic for HSM. It is a Disney movie remember. My 9 and 6 year old daughters are obsessed, and that’ s fine by me. They’re the kids the movie was made for- not us jaded adults. It’s all good, clean fun- which although Grease is a classic, I cannot let the girls watch due to a few scenes that I’m sure you all know to which I am referring. So- thanks, Disney. And for those who still haven’t seen HSM, remember to transfer your brain back to when you were about 8 years old in order to truly enjoy. Otherwise, you’re just going to show your age!!!

  16. Mannie on July 11th, 2007 2:57 pm

I agree alot with what Sus said. I also watched it so I could say that I watched it. So many people talk about it and I really like musicals, so I figured why not. It is VERY predictable and there are no twists, but the songs (for the most part) aren’t bad. It’s alot like Grease, but the songs aren’t as good. Boy meets girl, they end up at the same school, other girl at school tries to sabitoge the relationship but in the end it works out (except they don’t fly away in a car). I wouldn’t go out and buy the CD or anything and I might rent HSM 2 if I were extremely bored. Maybe if I wasn’t 31 and loved Grease since I was yay high, I’d enjoy it better.

  17. Mannie on July 11th, 2007 3:02 pm

Becky kind of hit it on the head. Watch it like you’re 8 years old and you’ll love it. I didn’t do that. Too bad you can’t let your girls watch Grease. I watched it when I was about 8 or 9, but that was also a different time and I didn’t get where those scenes were going. They’d totally know now, which is a shame. I think I like Grease 2 better, at least alot of the songs. Reproduction is one of my absolute favorites. ๐Ÿ™‚

I had no idea that Zac’s voice was “blended” with someone else’s for HSM! Huh. I’m glad he gets to do all of the singing for the sequel and in Hairspray.

  19. Mandy on July 11th, 2007 4:36 pm

I can’t wait to see Hairspray. It looks amazing. I’m such a musical geek it’s not even funny!

I enjoyed HSM. I guess it’s cause I knew it was a made for TV Disney flick, so I wasn’t expecting much. The songs are very catchy. I was singing We’re All in This Together for days.

I think Zac is a cutie, but I can’t crush on him. I feel like you GMMR, it’s just too creepy. I’d be waiting for Chris Hanson and his To Catch a Predator team to bang down my door!

  20. jess on July 11th, 2007 5:13 pm

you should watch hsm just for the heck of it.
i really dont have a reason for you.
    lol.

  21. Lizzie on July 11th, 2007 5:16 pm

Ok so its definitely a typical cheesy Disney Channel movie but if you Zac Effron than you NEED to watch High School Musical cause he so fun and adorable in it!

  22. Pamela Halpert on July 11th, 2007 5:24 pm

I think you should watch it. It is a cute movie and I know I would have gone crazy over it if I was 10. Heck, people in my high school were singing the HSM songs in the hallways, so I suppose even non-preteens can become obsessed with it…

  23. laura on July 15th, 2007 12:43 pm

we don’t have disney channel at my house, so I caught it on a weekend trip to Orlando – an excellent guilty pleasure if I do say so myself. In my head, Zac Efron is the little brother version of Chris Lowell (because of the hair, obvs) so I just spend my time lusting after Chris, and leave Zac for my 13 year old cousin.
