Fall Preview: THE BIG BANG THEORY

September 24, 2007 by

The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

Premiere Date: Monday, September 24, 2007
Airs: Mondays @ 8:30pm on CBS

Leonard and Sheldon are brilliant physicists, the kind of “beautiful minds” that understand how the universe works. But none of that genius helps them interact with people, especially women. All this begins to change when a free-spirited beauty named Penny moves in next door. Sheldon, Leonard’s roommate, is quite content spending his nights playing Klingon Boggle with their socially dysfunctional friends, fellow CalTech scientists Wolowitz and Koothrappali. However, Leonard sees in Penny a whole new universe of possibilities… including love.

I’m always cautious to pan a new show because what is funny to some people is another man’s “Two and a Half Men”. THE BIG BANG THEORY offered a few laughs, but I personally found them a bit on the cheap side. This is another show this season cashing in on the popularity of the dorks, nerds, geeks – whatever you wan to call ’em. But these guys were almost caricatures. Actually that could be said for all the characters to this show. This is a straight up sitcom. There’s not subtly to the writing or the acting. I’m not putting this show at the bottom of my list because I think there’s a certain audience out there that might really embrace this type of humor. But I can’t recommend that you take the time out of your TV time to watch it – not when it’s up again CHUCK. (Oh and let’s hope that this show doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing Johnny Galecki showing up as Trouty on MY BOYS…I love Trouty!)

Jim Parsons stars as Sheldon in THE BIG BANG THEORY Johnny Galecki as Leonard in THE BIG BANG THEORY Kaley Cuoco as Penny in THE BIG BANG THEORY Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz in THE BIG BANG THEORY Kunal Nayyer as Rajesh Koothrappali in THE BIG BANG THEORY

I was part of a focus group for this show at MGM. I couldn’t believe that the people around me seemed to really like it. Sigh.

Oh snap — I love me some Trouty too!

Agreed…this show is lame. What makes me even more annoyed at this one-note show is that it is replacing “The Class” in that timeslot. That show was solid and definately had potential to get even better

I’m TOTALLY w/ Laura on this. I can’t believe that this schlock is replacing “The Class.” I saw the pilot a couple of weeks ago and I just couldn’t sit through it. I was in shock when I was reading the EW fall TV preview and they actually liked it… Blech.

Count me in as registering my astonishment that they replaced a quality show like The Class and replaced it with this crap.

    *sigh*

It’s almost to the point that nothing the networks do anymore will shock me.

This show was terrible. About 10 minutes in, during a commercial break, I got up to wash dishes. I forgot I was watching the show and only realized it when I finished the dishes and sat back on the couch – thankfully in BBT’s last few minutes.

I guess I’m the minority….thought Big Bang was pretty funny and never really like The Class. Didn’t care for Penny though.

Yeah, I was recording HIMYM, and left it on recording this. I did laugh a few times, but I wasn’t impressed. The main characters were, as you said, such a caricature. I am smart, not that smart, but I know plenty of people who are that smart, who actually manage to be …. dare I say it… NORMAL. It just wasn’t funny to me.

Yeah, I caught it last night after HIMYM, as well. I gotta agree with Kelly…I thought it was pretty funny also.

Definitely seemed to be setting ground-work for future eps…but I’m curious to see where they go with this…
