Hands down the most superb episode of The Office's history! (Yes, I think it even trumps "It's a date")

I laughed til I cried. I changed my underwear 5 times from laughter. (Can't wait to get my water bill....)

The deleted scenes, especially clip 2, had me rolling too.

Anyone who thinks this episode wasn't good must be on crack.

I thought this episode was hilarious. One of the best this season. Okay, my absolute favorite scene is when Dwight was peeing in the empty can. That was great. I just sat there staring at the TV saying "is he peeing?" and sure enough he was.

I agree. The weird feeling has come over me too but I wish there was more Karen in the episode. I loved when she said "oh yeah, deffinately beat the traffic" and poor Jim.

This was a bad episode for Jim. I mean, you kind of feel bad for the guy.

1. Dragged to Utica againist his will.
2. Faced Karen
3. Got bused by Toby of not reading the book.

Question: What did Pam lip to Toby and Oscar when they found out Jim didn't read the book? It was the last line of the night. Please and thank you (:

Now that I've watched it again, I saw the teapot. I can't believe I missed it the first time! (I think after meeting Ed Helms and developing a little crush on him, I was too busy watching "Andy" that I somehow missed it the first time). Good grief!

Laura - The teapot was def teal and the same one Jim gave Pam. IF you saw a blue and white one at some point, maybe there was more than one scene with a teapot, but the Xmas one was most definitely there.

This is such a minor point, but one that's been bugging me . . . people on various message boards have been mentioning the FTC teapot as being the one from Jim to Pam, but wasn't Jim's teapot teal-colored, and this one blue and white? (Sorry, I know there are better issues to comment on) :)

Totally loved it. I was giddy excited about the episode - and it exceeded my expectations. I too wish Karen could be back - but maybe just every once in a while, like a David Wallace or something! So many funny moments! Wanted - sassy black man, big butt, bigger heart. HAHA Funny though - jam (pun not intended!) packed with funny stuff, but no Darryl, Kelly or Angela! Great episode from Mindy...LOVED IT!!! :)

I thought this episode was good, but not great. I think there were some good funny moments (just seeing Jim, Michael and Dwight in warehouse garb was enough). It's funny that they mentioned that Jim had a brother because I always imagined he did and I always imagined the brother as Dane Cook. A girl can dream:)

I almost forgot. The "disguises" last night really made me laugh particularly because when Steve Carell was in college he had a very similar mustache. I wish I had a scanner or a modicum of technical know-how so I could share the yearbook photo.

My favorite line in awhile: "Come on Jim, just climb on top of her and think about Stanley.” I watched that over and over again and laughed so hard, I was crying!

Loved the Jim/Karen scene. It was so awkward, but great. During it, my fiance turned to me and said, "How good is his acting?" He thought JKras did an awesome job with that scene.

I love this episode. I just wanted to comment that I actually liked the FTC. I thought it was hilarious how they wouldn't let Andy in. Plus, I could actually see Pam joining something like that now that she is trying to become more independant and go on with this new phase in her life.

I liked the episode a lot. There were a few lol moments, but my biggest gripe is about how the writers are treating Karen's character and the dialogue she's given. When in the office with Jim, she had basically nothing to say - no comebacks filled with anger or bitterness that'd been building up for months. It was pretty unrealistic/unbelievable and so unlike Karen.

They did the same thing in last season's finale with Jim and Karen in the car ride to NY. I know it was prob meant to underscore the lack of chemistry btwn them, but c'mon. I don't really see Jim as being that into a girl - enough to date her that long and have her move from CT to PA - when there's actually nothing of interest in their conversation and it's lame at best.

Am I one of the only people that thought the Finer Things Club was hilarious? I think it's adorable that they wear hats and eat themed food. I also think it's hilarious that it wasn't Angela's doing (when I read the preview I was sure it was somehting she made up). More power to Pam for having an outlet for those kinds of things.

I also really loved Karen and Jim's meeting. Not because it was pleasant to watch, but because it reminds me so much of my first meetings with my ex. The bitter sarcasm, the awkward looks, the underlying hostility. It was so real, and yea, I think Jim deserved it, and yea, I think Karen deserved what she got for staying with him in the first place (but that's a different topic for a different time). The scene was amazing! I have never seen such a wide range of Jim in one episode.

I did miss Kelly, but I miss her in every episode she doesn't have a big role in. Other than that, there were certainly lots of images that made me giggle (ex. Dwight and the soda can)

Solid episode all around

Am I one of the only people that thought the Finer Things Club was hilarious? I think it’s adorable that they wear hats and eat themed food. I also think it’s hilarious that it wasn’t Angela’s doing (when I read the preview I was sure it was somehting she made up). More power to Pam for having an outlet for those kinds of things.

My two cents: I really enjoyed this episode. So many great quotes. Not thrilled with FTC but saw it as part of Pam's evolution as Fancy New Beesly. Insofar as the Karen/Jim interaction, it always strikes me that Jim is very conscious about not wanting to reveal too much on a personal level to the cameras. He's fine with joking, pranks and mugging for the camera, but I think it makes him uncomfortable when they pick up too much that he doesn't want them to see. While Jim does have his awkwardness in expressing himself, I think the conversation may have been different if it wasn't played in front of a cameraman. Make sense? I don't think he wanted them there for this "reunion" with his ex.

Loved this episode! I thought the mix of silliness and character development was perfect. We got to see that Stanley really does have a soft spot for Scranton, and of course Andy's need to join anything exclusive. We all love that it's Jim's turn for a little introspection, much like Pam last season. I hope they continue to let JKras grow in the role...sort of like, he's got Pam, now what?
As always, thanks GMMR for all you do :)

Did not like this ep and that is the first time I felt this way! I thought it was too "wacky-sitcom" and not very funny. The sub plot seemed totally out of character for all three (well, not for Toby who I assume was just there for Pam). And Dwight with the malatov cocktails? He's gone from eccentric to unibomber? That's a bit much even for Dwight. I think the whole situation to get Jim to Utica was too contrived and out of keeping with the "realism" of the show.

Ashley - I see your point but it's one thing to evolve and try new things and another thing to turn into an elitist snob. It just doesn't fit Pam's character. On Oscar, however, it's completely believable. I think that Toby was probably in it to get close to Pam, but he is kind of the cerebral type so he probably does enjoy the things they do. The thing I thought was most weird about it is that Toby & Pam never really seemed to have any kind of connection before and all of a sudden this pops up. If they had shown something like this last season, I think his crush on her would have more creedance.

I thought for sure there would be a scene in which Toby reveals he's only in the FTC to be close to Pam. I love the secret Toby crush.

I have to wonder ... what was Karen expecting from Jim when she asked him to stay behind? She knows he and Pam are dating. I think she just wanted to let Jim have it, and maybe now that she's said what she thinks, she can get over it.

I hope she comes back in future episodes, if only for the closure.

I agree with Ashley. I liked seeing Pam show that she does have another side. Didn't she major in English Lit in college or something like that? I think it is good that she has something that is just her's.

Karen.....is.....kind of a bitch. Wow, bitter much? She already knew that Jim still had feelings for Pam (the Return) and I don't care how much you talk, you are probably not going to turn off being in love with someone for 2 and half years, especially if there is any hope.

Overall, I thought it was very funny.

I really enjoyed Jim's interaction with the camera-person in this episode. He's so freaked out when he's in the car hiding and Karen is about to spot him and he keeps telling the camera to get down - truly great stuff. And in the background Michael is telling him to climb on top of Karen and think of Stanley, which was when I paused the show to laugh so hard I cried. I was horrified for Jim that he was kidnapped, but it was a good chance to see the tables turned on him. Usually, he is manipulating the others with his pranks - wonder if he'll think a bit more next time, now that he knows how it feels to be humiliated.

I was also not a fan of the Finer Things Club (although I do love EM Forster). Way too pretentious, but a nice showcase of Toby's still-desperate longing for Pam. The deleted scene was great, especially Angela's disdain for the weight-loss support group. Love her.

I loved this episode and I actually likes The Finer Things Club. Pam is trying new things like last season, so I thought it fit her. And I didn't see it as those three trying to exclude people. I think they knew everyone else wouldn't take it seriously like they did (Jim proved that). I felt bad since Andy wanted to be in it, but he would have never sat around talking about books and themes and meanings. He just wanted to be cool.

And as far as all of the over the top antics going on, I feel like that is what makes The Office great. They take normal things about being in the office and relationships and mix it with over the top storylines. Remember when Dwight got a concussion and then his personality changed? Totally unrealistic, but one of the best episodes (in my opinion). Last night they had the awkward reunion of Jim and Karen (totally believeable) mixed in with disguises and a prank resulting in a broken copier. I feel like when they balance the storylines like that, they come up with the funniest episodes.

I, too, was 'eh' with this episode. So many things were funny. A lot were over the top. The Finer Things Club was so out of place. I did, however, love Andy's talking head about the FTC. That's his goal. The party-planning committee is his standby. Kevin's band is his safety. :-)

RJS--Rolando was the secretary of the Utica branch ("Dunder Mifflin, this is Rolando..."), and I thought that was a nice touch...having been an administrative assistant myself, you always get to know the others in your equivalent positions in different departments and different branches.

I thought overall a great episode, but I would have loved to see more Andy Bernard. The Finer Things Club was MADE for Andy Bernard's posturing, Ivy-league attitude, and I would have liked to see more of his "application" process. There's a deleted scene up on NBC.com that would have been great in the episode.

Jim's Irish accent made me swoon!
I really did enjoy this episode. I don't think I've laughed as hard as I did last night, all season! I definately will not put this down as my favourite episode, but I really did enjoy it.
My main complaint however is the directing. I know it was Joss and all, but there were some moments when the camera just felt all over the place (In the car there was a camera on Jim, Dwight, Michael and all three of them). It just felt a little off.
I'm still undecided on the Finer Things Club. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I don't know.
But Jim in this episode! Brilliant! I love that we're getting to see more of the character, and I really hope that it continues!

At the end, who does Pam say told her everything about what happened in Utica? I thought she said "Rolando" and then I thought, Who is that? And maybe it was Michael or Dwight's uniform name, but I checked and it wasn't. Or maybe my brain just completely fizzled out on this one.

It occured to me that whenever you get Jim, Michael and Dwight in a car together (The Injury), chaos ensues.

And while Jim didn't handle the break-up well and Karen is entitled to be hurt, she obviously still hadn't comprehended the depth of the Jim/Pam relationship. Telling Jim that if he wanted to see her, he could have just called, as if this whole prank was his desperate, immature way of getting in touch with her. Get over yourself, Filipelli.

I liked the Jim/Karen interaction. He was FINALLY honest with her about his feelings, Pam, etc. Too bad he couldn't have been when they were together. She's probably entitled to give him some crap about how he treated her. But, hopefully that's put to rest now. Give her a nice Utica boy toy!

So many laugh out loud moments in this episode! And JK's best performance since Drug Testing. I, for one, am grateful that the characters and show are evolving. It would be boring if it was the same every week, if there was no growth of the characters. Just my two little cents.

I thought it was really out of sinc with the show. Most of it was not funny to me at all. But now that I read the comments, I was never a fan of slapstick comedy (Ben Stiller) so if this resembles that, then thats why I don't like it. Totally not funny. And the whole Karen thing just shows her character is a one trick pony. There was nothing special about their reunion. I was dissapointed.

i thought the finer things club was pretty lame, too. i can get annoyed with pam sometimes for being so ... strange. i mean c'mon, karen would never mess with that!

i could definitely feel the heat last night during karen and jim's interaction, and i do miss karen and her sassy self. i didn't like jim and karen together, but karen and jim apart and bitter/PETRIFIED is awesome. i loved how frightened he was of her. (rightly so.) sweet.

Loved the episode - thought it was hilarious. GMMR, I think you miss Kearen for the same reason Jenna mentioned on the commentary of "The Job" - more tension between Jim/Pam/Karen. The Jim/Karen stuff was great. We are definitely seeing a depth to Jim we have not seen in previous seasons. I think Toby was the one who did not want Jim in the Club. Jim would not suspect him and it gives Toby a chance to be with Pam without Jim.

When Andy told Stanley that he was like an Uncle to him, an Uncle Remus, I just about wet my pants!!!!!
Flat out HYSTERICAL!
And then when Dwight threw Jim's phone out of the car, and Jim got so mad, I actually was mad for him. Really made you feel for Jim and how OUT OF CONTROL the whole situation was!

OMG, I haven't seen the episode yet, but Jim that Beret, OMG HAWWWT! *end fangirl moment*

Sorry, that's about all i can contribute at the moment. It's interesting to see how this ep (as all the other S4 ones) has really polarised the audience. Everyone here seems happy enough, but Office Tally is split!

I hate being Australian and having to wait!

Yeah, I really like that we get to see that Jim isn't always as awesome as he may think he is.

When Pam made the comment about someone not wanting him to join the FTC because of his jokes, I thought for a moment that it might be her.

I actually didn't like this ep so much. Too much slapstick going on for me to enjoy. But something that fascinates me so much about this show is how, despite some pretty zany things going on, the relationships can be so realistic.

In particular, the exchange between Jim and Karen was painful and awkward and tense and I could see it really happening to two people who've just broken apart. Nevermind the fake mustaches and whatnot, Jim sitting there with pretty much nothing to say except the wrong thing while Karen grew more and more angry is *exactly* what happens to so many people. Er...maybe that's just my own experiences. ;-)

I did like to see Jim being taken to task at pretty much every turn in this episode. Sure we all love him, but he can't always rely on being the "cool" one in the bunch.

Oh, and Toby's snazzy bow tie? Fabulous!

JKras owned the episode. Hands down. I think this may even be his emmy submission. Are they even having the emmy's this year with the strike and all?

Anyway, I just want to say how much I LOVED that Pam sympathized with Jim and tried to make him feel better. She was the epitomy of a caring girlfriend and I thought to myself...At LAST! The writers have kept them solid and I can't thank them enough for that.

As for Jim/Karen's exchange. It was brilliant to see Jim squirm, something we didn't see in their silent exchange in The Job, but what bothered me was that Fillipeli still cared. She still felt hurt, betrayed, and angry when all I wanted to see was her moving on. Jim didn't come out a winner in the conversation but Karen didn't either. But hell, that's reality, right?

I really hated the FTC. Pam, the girl who was so upset no one came to her Art Show is now excluding people? What gives? That whole idea was nauseating. If it wasn't for the roll credits scene in the end I would have said phooey to the whole plot.

As for Dwight. He's baaaack! Yipee.

I loved this episode and it made me laugh a lot! You mentioned my favorite parts.

Speaking of Halperts family, we so called that last night or the other night when we were talking in the OT chatroom. Score for us!

Also, if you get a screencap of Jim in that flatcap, please o please post it because I want it too!

I've never posted here before, but after tonight's episode I had to come by and say that this was BY FAR one of my favorites! I don't think I've laughed this hard in a long time.

And Jim's face when he found out he was being kidnapped?? PRICELESS!

By the way, love this site! First place I come Thursday nights!

Some friends of mine who got an impromptu tour of the set by Kent Zbornak (I know, it sounds crazy, but I've known one of them for years and she's always seemed very honest, soo....) actually asked about Larissa Halpert. KZborn said that it was Jim's sister. So, now we know he has a brother (who has a new baby! aww!) and a sister!

There was just not enough Karen in this episode for me. I suppose I had built it up in my head as Karen's Triumphant Return, and that's not quite what we got. I was kind of sad. I miss Karen (and Rashida), too. :(

There were some incredibly laugh-out-loud funny moments tonight (GMMR, you enumerated them so well I won't repeat you!), but I felt there was also a lot of exposition too, without it being labored and obvious until I got some distance from the episode. And as you and Matt R pointed out, it was mostly about Jim. His position as resident cool guy in the office was seriously tested tonight. I think the writers have always hinted about his character that he comes across as that charming guy who is funny but who probably needs to take things a little more seriously sometimes. And obviously not everyone in the office thinks he's that great. Since when does Oscar dislike him? And did he really sit in the car in that uniform and mustache when Michael and Dwight couldn't see him anymore? He was a little sad and I wanted to just give him a hug!

My only complaint about tonight's episode is that there wasn't enough Andy. And where was Angela?

And did he really sit in the car in that uniform and mustache when Michael and Dwight couldn’t see him anymore? He was a little sad and I wanted to just give him a hug!

My only complaint about tonight’s episode is that there wasn’t enough Andy. And where was Angela?

So I missed 1/2 this episode and will have to watch it 1st thing tomorrow morning when it becomes available online. The parts that I did see were hysterical, including the walkie-talkie conversation.

Kath - I'm pretty sure you mean that Karen got her ass dumped by a fountain in NY, not her dumped ass by a fountain in NY (since I don't feel qualified to comment on the entire episode I'll just check your grammer instead, giddy girl).

I have to say that my thought process when I heard about this episode was pretty much the same as yours. I was thinking there would be a meaningful conversation between Jim & Karen and some closure for both of them. Boy was I wrong. Karen was a battle ax and Jim kind of whimped out during their conversation. I can think of a million other things that he could have said aside from what he actually did say which would have made him come off seeming more dignified and mature, he totally blew it though. Something tells me this isn't going to be there last encounter. I hope they both get the chance to redeem themselves.

I have no comment on the finer things subplot since I really didn't get that at all.

I liked most of it. The Finer Things Club did seem a bit odd and frankly out of character for all three of them (Pam, Oscar, Toby). But it was sweet when Pam tried to cheer up Jim by letting him in. And of course Andy's reaction was fun.

And I have to very much agree with you GMMR, the Michael/Jim radio conversation was so funny I almost suffocated from laughing. "Just climb on top of her and think of Stanley!" Is now the text on my screen saver.

I think I am starting to like what they are doing with Jim this season. Instead of so much drama about Jim and Pam relationship, we seem to be getting some sublte drama about how now that Jim's love life is somewhat stable he is starting to realize the rest of this life may need some changes.
