Golden Globes in Jeopardy

December 12, 2007 by

Tomorrow morning, Ashley Judd and HEROES star Hayden Panetierre, will be on hand to announce the nominees for the 65th Annual Golden Globes. But the big question is, will the Globes actually take place and if so will there be any stars on hand to accept the grand gesture from the Hollywood Foreign Press?

With no end in sight for the WGA strike, the buzz all around Hollywood is that SAG will be asking that the actors not cross the picket lines to accept awards in a show of solidarity with the writers. Because really, without the words they need to demonstrate their talent and craft, actors are just pretty faces on a screen.

So no actors and writers to receive awards. Perhaps the costume designers will finally get their chance to shine.

The Golden Globes are scheduled to air on Sunday, January 13th.

Check back to GMMR tomorrow when I post the nominees in all the TV categories as well as my take on who the winners will be and who they SHOULD be.

While I can’t wait for the nominations, if the strike does go on, I do hope actors will refuse to cross lines. Because its true. Without writers, actors are nothing.
However, the other awards are not as interesting (to me!)

Wow, I totally forgot about the Goolden Globes. Hopefully, the strike is over by then, but if not then I’m with Emily on this one. I hope the actors don’t cross the picket lines. I am curious about the noms though. My show got noms but got shutout last year so that was a bummer.

Now remind me, do the Globes not award supporting actor/actress or do they? Hopefuly Jenna can get this one.

Time sure flies!! I can’t believe the noms are tomorrow. I also agree that if the strike is still going on I hope they don’t cross the picket lines. I will not be watching the globes if this is the case. If that’s the case it will be the first time in like 13 years I haven’t watched, so yeah I think it’s a HUGE deal to me to support the writers!!!

That would be interesting if the actors decide not to go to the awards show; perhaps that will get the studios back to the table to negotiate fairly.

I almost forgot about the Globes as well. I’d also love to see Jenna get a nom, but I think it’s going to be dominated by drama series (probably Grey’s) and the TV movie/miniseries actors, since they combine everything together for the supporting categories. The one good thing about the Golden Globes is that it was one of the first major awards show (at least that I can recall) to recognize The Office when Steve Carell won the Globe a couple years ago.

I think it’s unfair to expect someone to refuse an honor awarded to them just because there is a strike. Recognition for outstanding performance should transcend whatever disagreements there are among the ranks. I support the writers, but asking someone to give up an award and their moment in the sun, maybe a once-in-a-lifetime thing, that sounds like a step backward for their cause. Eventually the strike will be resolved, but winning a prestigious award could skyrocket a career forever. Solidarity and support is one thing, but sooner or later it reaches the point where it is asking too much, and I think this may be that point.

I was going to be the voice of dissent but “J” beat me to it. I think it’s very selfish and egotistical for the WGA to tell the SAG not to accept awards, basically saying “without us, you’re nothing anyway.” And the strike has nothing to do with how talented someone is. Heck, if there had been writing awards, (and why isn’t there any for the Golden Globes?) I think those writers should show as well. Their acceptance speech would probably consist of a harsh scholding, though.
