LOST: “The Economist”

February 15, 2008 by

Lost, The Economist

I’m so loving LOST this season that at the end of almost every episode I want to stand up give everyone involved a nice round of applause. The energy and momentum of this show from the opening minutes until their jaw dropping endings (which usually involve Ben for some reason) just make me happy to be as invested in TV as I am. This is good stuff people.

There was just so much that happened last night, and although my little notepad is filled with questions (and a few OMGs), I still don’t think I caught it all. But let’s dive in all the same.

“I am one of the Oceanic 6” (yes, the t-shirts are coming soon)
We now know that Sayid is on of the Oceanic 6. He joined Jack, Kate and Hurley in the escape off the island. We also learned that Sayid!815 (his new post rescue name) hasn’t really been a productive member of society since his return. Unless of course you call being a hitman being productive.

Ben and Sayid, The EconomistAnd to make things even more frakking confusing, we’ve learned that Sayid is killing off people on some kind of list…a list put together by none other than Benjamin Linus (if that’s really his name). It seems that good old Benny has got some dirt on Sayid and he’s using that info to turn him into a killing machine.

Why Sayid, why? What did you do? Does this have to do with the big Oceanic 6 secret? You know, the one that Hugo!815 and Jack!815 were talking about? I want answers, and I want them now!!

More names…will it ever end?
LOST, Naomi’s braceletMiles is on the island to find Ben, but it doesn’t seem to be a personal mission. He mentions to Jack that someone hired him to find Ben. Who? The Mankowski guy? And dead Naomi is sporting a bracelet engraved with a message to her from someone with the initials R.G. Any theories on who this mysterious R.G. is? And is the same bracelet that Sayid!815 found on Elsa after he killed her?

31 minutes…d’oh
Dan Faraday is playing around with some gadget which ends in a mini rocket being launched supposedly from the boat to the island. Inside the rocket was a stop watch. Much to Daniel’s dismay, it seemed to reveal that time on the island runs 31 minutes behind than the rest of the world. This is HUGE!! Why? Got me, but I know it’s HUGE!!

Lost, clocks

Ben Linus by any other name sure would smell as sweet nasty…
Sayid, Kate and Miles set off to find Team Locke and find Charlotte. While at the barracks Sayid finds a secret closet in Ben’s house filled with clothes, luggage, money and many passports, seemingly for all of Ben’s aliases. One passport was for Zurich and although it had Ben’s picture the name was Dean Moriarity (or so I think…couldn’t see it well without my glasses). Oh Ben, there’s so much we don’t know about you, you little troll.

Where is the love?
Hurley is used as the bait Team Locke needed to ambush Kate, Miles and Sayid. Locke takes Miles somewhere to question him, Sayid is locked up with Ben, and Kate is held hostage in the bedroom by Sawyer (lucky girl). Ok, here’s my question…why so much animosity between Team Locke and Team Jack? I thought the two groups just decided to go their separate ways? What’s with all the guns and the kidnapping?

I’ll play house with you…
Kate asks James (what is up with everyone calling each other by their proper names these days?), why he went with Team Locke. He said he has nothing to go back to. He reminds her that she was going to jail before the crash, so why does she want to go back. Kate asks if they were just supposed to stay here and play house, and Sawyer basically says ‘yeppers’ Awww. And I’m asking how Kate has been managed to be locked in a room with Sawyer for longer than 30 seconds without ripping his clothes off.

And we’re off…
Later we see Sayid returning to Team Locke with Charlotte in tow. He tells Frank that he exchanged Miles for her, and Frank doesn’t seem to mind. Jack is a little defeated to know that Kate supposedly decided to stay behind with Team Locke. Score one for Skate fans.

Lost, helicopterFrank, Sayid, Desmond (who wants to know why Naomi had the pic of him and Penny), and Dead!Naomi board the helicopter and head for the boat. But not before Daniel adamantly informs Frank that he must stay on the exact bearing that they came in on. Again, something extremely important that will make sense some day down the road. And with that we get a stunning aerial shot of the island as the helicopter flies off.

Best line of the night…
Awesome. The ship sent us another Sawyer.” [Hurley, after Miles called him ‘Tubby’]

This Week’s Questions….
Lost Questions

  • Who is R.G. on Naomi’s bracelet?
  • Why is their a 31 minute time lag on the island and why does it bother Daniel so much?
  • Why does Frank tell Daniel to hang up the phone if Mankowski answers?
  • What happened to Jacob’s cabin?
  • What’s with all the stuff in Ben’s secret room? Why does he need all they money, passports, etc?
  • Who is Elsa and who is her employer?
  • What is Ben holding over Sayid!815?
  • What happened the last time Sayid, to quote Ben, “thought with his heart instead of his gun”?

Did we love last night’s episode? Have any theories on what’s going on? Any other questions to add to our list?

(Please keep questions, comments and theories based on personal speculation. This post is NOT to discuss spoilers you have heard.)

Dean Moriarty? Seriously? As in “On the Road” and Jack Kerouac? Hmmmm…

One quick correction first … Charlotte didn’t board the helicopter. She stayed on the island with Daniel and Jack.

Anyway, what about at the end, when Sayid went to the “vets” to have his gunshot wound cared for, and he’s about to get the shot. Tell me that voice at first was not Christian’s (Jack’s father)!? The voice was deeper than Ben’s, and I thought for sure it sounded like Jack’s dad! And then when they showed Ben, it became Ben’s higher voice. You have to go back and listen!! That sure backs up the idea that it was Christian sitting in the rocking chair in the cabin when Hurley visited.

What a great episode. I was constantly thinking “OMG!”

Oops, you are right. No Charlotte. She stayed behind to do work or something. Damn over achiever. Thanks for the update.

When I first heard the voice I knew it was Ben but I knew they were trying to not make it obvious.

This show is awesome this season. I know there are a lot of questions and everything but I think it’s easier to understand what’s going on this seasons. Does that make sense?

I don’t think that was Jack’s father speaking last night, but I’m really interested to know why he plays such an important part. The same goes for Locke’s father.

I’m guessing that Sun and Jin and the last 2 of the Oceanic 6. They are with Team Jack and Sun is pregnant. Since pregnant women die on the island, I don’t think anyone will be willing to leave her behind.

Yeah, I knew the voice was Ben’s too, after the second or third thing he said. He seemed to be speaking without his usual drawl but I knew it was him.

My theory on the killings and the “list”: The people on Ben’s list want to find out about what’s really going on with the island. I think they work for Scary Lawyer Guy with buggy eyes (Abaddon???). Ben knows who they are and has hired Sayid to kill them off so that they won’t find out the real story — whatever that is. That’s also in keeping with Ben’s comment to Sayid about wanting to protect his friends — he talked Sayid into working for him by telling him that if these people discover the island, everyone that stayed there will be killed. It would also explain the guy’s reaction on the golf course when he found out who Sayid really was.

Am I the only who got a little teary when Sayid & Des took off in the helicopter? Not sure why but it was just kinda sad and it’s so uncertain as to what will happen to them now. Plus, to actually see someone seemingly leaving the island was very emotional for me.

Could German Ben be his “evil twin”? Maybe incorporating that book from a year or two ago(Bad Twin)? I thought Ben’s voice was deeper and there was just something different about him. I love this season.

“What happened the last time Sayid, to quote Ben, “thought with his heart instead of his gun”?”

refers to the girl sayid was in love with, whats-her-face in iraq?
I can’t think of her name, but that girl.
    lol.

  9. jess on February 15th, 2008 4:27 pm

“What happened the last time Sayid, to quote Ben, “thought with his heart instead of his gun”?”

    refers to that girl sayid was in love with in iraq;
    whats-her-face.
    I forgot her name.
but I think he was supposed to torture her, but he helped her escape.
    I think.
it was, like, three seasons ago.

  10. Give Me My Remote on February 15th, 2008 4:33 pm

Are you sure he was talking about Nadia? There are some that think that maybe Ben was talking about something that happened during the island rescue.

  11. Wu Kong on February 15th, 2008 4:58 pm

The reason the lag is significant is because it shows that for whatever reason, time passes at a slower rate on the island. The experiment that Faraday conducted was a test of that — the two clocks should have been synchronized, and that’s why the “payload” didn’t arrive as scheduled.

I am really happy to feel this LOST again! It reminds us of the beginning when were “all like, huh – what”…its back. The endless questions are back, we know they will be answered eventually – exciting!

    Beeslys theories…

Who is R.G. on Naomi’s bracelet?

This one is really stumping me. Anyone we know with G as a last name on the island?

Why is their a 31 minute time lag on the island and why does it bother Daniel so much?

Such a Bermuda Triangle feeling to this. Maybe he has a sinking feeling they wont be getting off the island after all.

Why does Frank tell Daniel to hang up the phone if Mankowski answers?

Why am I drawing a blank on this one – fill me in pretty please!

    What happened to Jacob’s cabin?

    Was it ever really there?

What’s with all the stuff in Ben’s secret room? Why does he need all they money, passports, etc?

Perhaps there are times when matters can only be handled by him – does he have “powers” we’re unaware of?

Who is Elsa and who is her employer?

I have a feeling its the black man that visited Hurley 815.

What is Ben holding over Sayid!815?

Who did Sayid not kill because his “feelings” got in the way – will we soon find out? Lets hope so!

What happened the last time Sayid, to quote Ben, “thought with his heart instead of his gun”?

Will we find out soon? My mind is spinning!!!!

Beesly is loving getting LOST in LOST 🙂

    Answering…

“Anyway, what about at the end, when Sayid went to the “vets” to have his gunshot wound cared for, and he’s about to get the shot. I think Bens voice was similiar to his on the island even when we couldnt see his face at the vets.
I think it might of been a way to show his new found staus/power – the deeper calm voice – maybe angry, maybe part evil! I agree it didnt sound completely like him but the way his words went up at the end I just think they were trying to keep our suspense when wondering who Sayid was talking to.

But I personally think it was only Bens voice.

  14. Kristi on February 15th, 2008 7:32 pm

My favorite line of the night was:

Jack: “Oh, so you’re saying I should wait 20 minutes and go anyways?”

That cracked me up for some reason 🙂

  15. Beesly on February 15th, 2008 10:08 pm

Kristi – I thought that was really clever too 🙂

I also liked when Hurley said something to the affect of “great they brought another Sawyer”

    🙂

    LOVED this week’s episode!

I dont think kate was one of the Oceanic 6. I mean if so- she’d probably be in jail, settlement or not. And really she’s never been identitified as one of the oceanic 6. And notice how all the promos for last night’s show say “another member of the oceanic 6” not “the 4th member of the oceanic 6.” Not that thats something to trust alone. Just another suggestion.

Could kate have gotten off the island another way? A deal with ben perhaps? Or maybe she gets off with team Jack and just strikes a deal to not be publicly known as survived and assumed a new identity.

Am i the only one who saw the evidence that Ben and Sayid were not alone in the operating room? If you watch it again Someone adjusts the overhead light (with gloves on) then Ben injects Sayid with pain killer and he has no gloves. I say there was a third person in the room. Secondly, there was a voice with an echo before we saw Ben in the room. When we saw Ben there was no echo. I think Jacob was in the room with Ben and Sayid. I also think Jacob could be Christian Sheppard or he can at least take Christian Sheppard’s form

  18. allison on February 17th, 2008 2:56 pm

I thought I was the only one who thought it was Christian’s voice at the end! I was sure it was him and then it changed and it was Ben.
I think Kate is one of the oceanic 6 because in the promo they showed her with shades on and surrounded by people, like reporters or something.

  19. Dave on February 17th, 2008 5:29 pm

R.G. is Regina, the girl on the ship who answers the phone, and who is also… dun dun dun…. Naomi’s sister.

    1) They sound exactly alike
2)”Tell my sister I love her” – not just a code.
    3) I dunno, but did we ever hear Naomi’s name mentioned in that scene where she finds out who her “crew” is?
    4) The only other “R” I can think of is Rose… ummmmmm…

    Just a thought.

  20. Beesly on February 18th, 2008 5:25 pm

Why would they have that crazy code “Tell my sister I love her”…..

we need to know more about that – and HOW DOES THIS GUY KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO DEAD PEOPLE???

    **gulp**…..so much.
