The Morning After: ‘Betty’ ‘Rock’ ‘Scrubs’ ‘Lost’ ‘Anatomy’

April 25, 2008 by

It’s Friday morning and I’m still feeling overwhelmed by last night’s TV extravaganza. There’s so much to discuss yet it’s sunny and beautiful outside. What to do, what to do? I know! Put together one long ass post that says nothing at all significant or insightful about any of the shows but still gets it done and out of the way so I can go back outside and work on my tan. Deal? (Yeah, I’m selfish like that…sue me).

Read on as we talk about last night’s episodes of UGLY BETTY, 30 ROCK, SCRUBS, LOST and GREY’S ANATOMY.

Ugly Betty
Betty was back but her birthday was bamboozled. Don’t you always hate when your boyfriend’s Baby Mama comes to town? So annoying. Good thing Gio was there to pick up the shattered mess Henry left behind. Color me confused, but didn’t we see this same storyline play itself out when it was Henry and Walter fighting over Betty? Gabrielle Union reprised her role as Wilhemenia’s sexually manipulative sister (Gabby you should talk to your agent about being typecast). She and Daniel are moving in together. Snooze. Mama Meade and Alexis are working together on a new magazine with all the typical Meade family drama. Snooze again. Um, I love this show and all, but I’ve waited months and months from some classic Marc and Amanda and I feel gipped (although Marc discovering Daniel’s undies was fantastic). I like a little more humor in my telenovela’s. Last night was too soap opera-ish for my taste.

KDS over at E! reported yesterday that Rebecca Romijn’s role has been reduced from series regular to recurring next season. As someone who is usually bored with the Meade family, I’m actually ok with this. I still wonder what happened during the WGA strike to spur this change.

30 Rock
What to watch: 30 ROCKLike it or not, there is going to be an OFFICE spinoff. So I need NBC to announce that the spinoff is going to star Will Arnett. If it’s not then I need NBC to tell me that he will become a series regular on 30 ROCK. See I just can’t not have Will Arnett on my TV every week. It’s simple as that. The funny quotient on 30 ROCK is normally pretty high, but when Will shows up as Devon Banks I just know it’s going to be special.

The episode as a whole was pretty funny although I did think Tina Fey was a bit over the top as Executive Liz Lemon. But that’s ok because I was so consumed by the thought of Tracy’s Porn video game that I hardly noticed. And I don’t even play video games.

My favorite quotes of the night:

Devon: So go ahead, Donaghy…rub it in my face.
Jack: Normally I’d say ‘I bet you’d like that’, but today I won’t. Devon, I’m the only other person who understands what you were willing to do for this job and how devastated you must be that you aren’t going to get it.
Devon: It’s like when Christian won PROJECT RUNWAY even though Raimi was clearly the better draper.
—–
Jack (to Devon): Once they cast Clay Aiken in Spamalot, I knew it was just a matter of time before you showed up.
—-
Devon: That was so easy, like taking candy…from one of those guys who gives out candy at gay nightclubs.

Scrubs
With all do respect to all you who love SCRUBS, I just don’t get it. I’m not saying that it’s not funny, because it is. I just feel like I’ve been watching the same show for years now. I often watch the SCRUBS reruns when they’re on and I don’t feel like I’m getting anything new from the show. The same jokes and the same storylines. But as I’ve said before, comedy is a subjective thing. Just because it doesn’t work for me doesn’t mean it’s not any good.

Lost
Lost Season 4Kids, I’m going to have to watch LOST again later today. I watched it, and I liked it, but I don’t think I paid enough attention and I’m sure I missed some crucial stuff. What I do remember is that Ben’s daughter died (good riddance to the annoying twit) and that Ben can control ‘the monster’ from the room behind his suits and socks. Clare lived through a massive blast with hardly a scrape, yet with her really bad fake wig firmly attached. Sayid married Nadia (hurray) but then she was murdered (boo hiss). And Benjamin Linus continues his reign as the most enigmatic TV character of all time. This 10pm time slot is going to be rough for me when I get a real job and can’t stay up late to watch it. What did you think of the ep? What should I being paying attention to the second time around?

Grey’s Anatomy
There’s been all this chatter about how Shonda Rhimes and the GREY’S ANATOMY writers found a new perspective during the strike and want the show to get back to its roots. It’s been so long that GREY’S has been a ‘omg I can’t wait to see it‘ show that I can’t remember what its ‘roots’ look like (although if they’re anything like mine they need a touch up). But I’ll give them all the benefit of the doubt because I liked last night’s episode. I didn’t love it, but I liked it. A big hurrah for Meredith finally seeing a shrink. It’s about damn time. I found myself yelling at the TV when Meredith insisted that she didn’t have any issues to discuss. Really Mere? Really? Do you need me to list them for you? Let’s start with the day you were born and go from there.

I had a few laughs last night, and unlike the first half of the season these laughs were intentionally put there by the writers. I thought the contest was mildly amusing, but I thought Izzie should have been reprimanded for putting her patient through those expensive and very painful tests. That really bothered me. As did the apartment where George and Meredith’s sister live (sorry I can’t remember her name and I’m too lazy to go find out what it is because I don’t really care all that much about her). I know young doctor’s don’t make a ton, but George has to have some money. He’s been living rent free for a few years now. That place was just nasty. LEXIE…her name is Lexie. Oh and as for the Meredith/Derek/Rose storyline? Yeah, well there’s really no dramatic tension there since Shonda has shouted from the rooftops that Meredith and Derek are getting back together and staying that way. Hey Shonda….you could have ‘spoiler altered’ that and have kept me a bit more interested.

Still with me? Bravo to you! But now it’s your turn to talk to me about last night’s episodes. Spill it. Do you think I wrote all that for no one to leave comments. Bring it.

Or how about the GOB show? I’d watch a guy in a $3000 suit (come on!) do magic…oh wait…illusions…:)
seriously…kath, get to work finding out about the Office spin-off. I mean, not like you have nothing else to do…and i’m not the boss of you…but you’ve got the inside track…MAKE IT WORK!

    I thought Scrubs was a hilarious show…..

I don’t know what happened, but every time I try to watch it now it seems forced and awkward. And that just makes me sad because there are some fine actors on that show. They just need to move on and find a new project that will make me laugh WITH them, not at them.

Will Arnett and Amy Poehler should both be on the Office spinoff! They make my day better whenever they’re on tv, but both of them on the same show together ever week would make my whole life better…forever.

Alex was an annoying “twit” on Lost?

Now, sure, she wasn’t my fave either. Won’t miss her, natch. But “twit”? LOL. I dunno, I just felt like that was harsh. I feel like we barely saw her enough for her to be annoying. I’d call Claire more of a twit than Alex, but, you know, I guess, to each his own. haha.

Yeah, maybe it was a little harsh but I couldn’t stand that girl. She was always looking completely drugged out and she whined a ton. I wasn’t a fan.

I love me some Scrubs. Although I will admit that seasons 2 and 3 were the best. Also, a few years ago, Scrubs was really the only comedy that had really strong characters/storylines and no laughtrack. Now there’s the Office. (And 30 Rock, though I prefer Scrubs to that).

I thought the newest ep- in which the hospital said goodbye to Dr. Kelso – was quite good. It’s pretty obvious this was originally intended to be the last season. I wonder in what capacity we’ll see Kelso for the rest of the run.

I, too, loved me some Scrubs – because I found it had the humour of the early seasons, which I love. But the last few eps haven’t been my favourite, and I think it’s because I’ve heard a certain twosome will be back together, and I DO NOT want to see that happen.

30 Rock was hilarious only for the porn video game (and Will Arnett, who is totally awesome. And now that I know he’s Mr. Amy Poehler, he’s all the more awesome).

And Grey’s … entertaining, but I could care less about the Mer/Der/Rose storyline simply because I’m not a Mer fan, and Mer/Der have as much appeal as a slice of bacon to me (I’m a vegetarian, keep in mind…). Lexie is great, though, and I agree that, while I love Izzie with all my heart, she definitely should have been reprimanded for her pointless tests on Cheech … I mean, the patient.

Scrubs is my favorite show. I watch the reruns (which come on probably 6 times a day here) all the time. This week I watched about 5 minutes of the new show and quit. It’s not funny anymore. I don’t know if it has been rushed because of the strike or what but it sucks now. All the characters are acting way over the top (even for that show). It’s like a different set of people on the show. The writers can’t be the same. It’s like a different set of writers are trying to write in the same style as the old ones and just can’t do it correctly. Anyway. I hope next year on ABC it goes back to the way it was – otherwise it will be a waste of time.
