American Idol Takes on Neil Diamond Tonight

April 29, 2008 by

American Idol, Neil Diamond

No one can sing ‘Sweet Caroline’ like Neil (and the 35k+ fans at Fenway Park in the 8th inning) but Carly Smithson was going to try. That was until she was booted from the show. Should another wannabe Idol take on singing about our non-sour Caroline or are there songs better suited for their style?Tonight each of the Idols will sing two songs from the Neil Diamond songbook. Spoilers are starting to leak about who sang what, but I thought I’d ask all of you.

What two Diamond tunes should each of the Idols take on tonight?

    Well rumors have it that Jason will be singing “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “September Morn” and as someone who was born in the 80’s has no clue that Neil Diamond has any other song than “Sweet Caroline” ::hides head in shame::

    I YouTubed both songs and they’re both very pretty and Jasonesque..so hopefully he’ll have a nice rebound after last week’s trainwreck!

    I’m a huge Neil Diamond fan, so I can’t wait! I’m definitely going to miss Carly tonight. I don’t know if anyone left has enough energy to take on Neil Diamond’s upbeat songs, and it could be very boring if we get all ballads tonight. I think David Cook should take on Love on the Rocks, and I would love to see his version of America. I’m sure he could put a great spin on it. I would love to see David Archuleta sing Desiree, if only just to hear those lyrics coming out of his mouth. I have a fear, though, that he might take America and do a cheesey version of it. I think Syesha has to do an upbeat song and let her personality shine–maybe Forever in Blue Jeans? Perhaps Brooke could take on Hello Again or I Am I Said on the piano. And Jason Castro could do a stripped down version of Red Red Wine. I hope we’ll get some interesting arrangements, so I’m really excited to see what they all come up with!

    Why is it that Brooke always makes sure she is right next to the star in the pictures on every mentor she is right next to the mentor in the pictures. I hope people will stop letting her manipulate them into voting for her. I mean she has a super inflated ego of herself and if God gives talents and gifts to those who have them then why is she so proudly standing there when Carly and Michael Johns are gone? I mean she comes across as phony and stop starting the whole orchestra over isnt that a little over the top ego??

    Here is my go:

    * David Archuleta: I’m A Believer
    * Syesha Mercado: S You Don’t Bring Me Flowers or Heartlight
    * Brooke White: Play Me
    * Jason Castro: Sweet Caroline
    * David Cook: Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon

    I think that we will hear the Urge Overkill version of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” (as heard in Pulp Fiction) by David Cook. The rest is up to chance.

    A whole night of Neil? Who would think it possible?

    So far, I’m really let down by everyone but David Cook (love the AC on his guitar and his shirt for his brother!)… Syesha was good on her first song as well. I really really hope that Brooke or Jason is gone this week. Jason was boring and Brooke mutilated I’m A Believer and was so shocked when Simon told her so.
