Who Won American Idol Season 7

In the end it came down to the two guys that deserved most to be there – David Cook and David Archuleta. The contest is over. The votes have been counted. But starting at 8pm EST we’ve got 2 hours and about 55 minutes or so until one of them is named the American Idol.

The top 12 will reunite on stage and we will be forced to sit through some most likely really cheesy numbers. I’m assuming at some point everyone (or at least the Davids) will be clad all in white. [Cheesy number with all the Idols dressed in white in the first 5 minutes]. The dancing will be horrible. [It was…especially Amanda Overmeyer who looks like she would rather stand naked in Alaska than be on the Idol tour.] Jason Castro will look annoyed [and high]. Syesha, Carly and Michael will remind us that they all went home to early [yup, way too early]. Brook White will probably cry, or at least want to cry but then forget that she wanted to cry and ask that they start the finale all over again. [Ok maybe not but she was reading the lyrics off the teleprompter during her duet. Oh Brooke].

Ugh, start praying now that we don’t have to sit through the Golden Idol Awards, or for that matter anything involving Kelly Pickler and Wolfgang Puck. [Thankfully the Golden Idols have been retired. Instead we got “I am your brother, your best friend forever.” I was thrilled.]

Rumors are floating that there’s going to be some pretty big names in the house tonight and on stage. But who will the big guest be? Paul McCartney? Michael Jackson? Maybe even someone the voting AMERICAN IDOL audience (i.e. the tweens) really care about?! Note, if Michael Jackson IS the surprise guest tonight, for the love of God keep him away from Archuleta. [For a show that talks so much about being relevant tonight’s musical guests included Donna Summer, the Canadia Bruce Springsteen – Bryan Adams, Graham Nash, Gladys Knight (actually that one was inspired), and George Michael (although I’m not complaining about him despite his song being an hour long, but I was kind of waiting for Eli Stone to make an appearance.]

After over 95M votes…one David got 56% and the other got 44% of the vote.

The winner of American Idol season 7 is….

David Cook Wins American Idol

DAVID COOK!!!!!! OH holy hell!! I am freaking out right now!!!

Congrats to David Archuleta for being such a fantastic talent. No doubt this kid will go far.

But back to David Cook. This guy is pure class. Did you notice how he called all the IDOLS on stage with him for the final song? Oh I couldn’t be more happy right now. I need to pull myself together…these tears must stop.

Ladies and gentleman your AMERICAN IDOL…David Cook!

56% vs 44%… not as close as some would assume… still hoping for a Cook win!

  5. Kat on May 21st, 2008 8:12 pm

DC is still carrying this song. He smiled when Little David got shrieked at, kinda like he has a feeling that Little David has many many fans (*not me though!).

  6. Emily on May 21st, 2008 8:20 pm

Okay, I read the title of this post and was like “whoa, the shows barely started, how does she know who won?” I thought you were major psychic.

Anyways, I hope David Cook wins…..
However, I have no strong feelings as I don’t watch the show (I know, I am so strange!)

  7. Cathy on May 21st, 2008 8:43 pm

What is this version of The Letter?! It’s awful!

  8. Kat on May 21st, 2008 8:43 pm

I keep forgetting about all these people who used to be on the show… I’ve been so focused on DC that I blanked on everyone else.

  9. Caroline on May 21st, 2008 8:45 pm

    Love the SYTYCD crew 🙂

Hope they get more camera time !

  10. Kat on May 21st, 2008 8:46 pm

Ok, so I kinda died laughing on the Simon montage….. Ooooh!! I like this song they just started!!!

  11. unknown on May 21st, 2008 8:48 pm

pls post the winners at once..
i won’t be able to watch it..:(

    Donna Summer and Ryan Adams…seriously?

  13. Kat on May 21st, 2008 8:53 pm

I was hoping for artists people have heard from in the past 20 years…

  14. Kat on May 21st, 2008 8:59 pm

Ok… so ZZ Top and DC was absolutely amazing. Looked DC felt comfortable up there and had a blast.

  15. Cathy on May 21st, 2008 9:05 pm

Was that David Cook in that Guitar Hero commercial?

  16. Jenn on May 21st, 2008 9:05 pm

Hee, my 7-year-old is now traumatized by seeing DC in his undies. “Mom, this is completely inappropriate!”

Just tuned in myself – figured I wouldn’t miss much.

  17. Kat on May 21st, 2008 9:06 pm

Yes, and it almost made me choke on my dinner!

  18. Cathy on May 21st, 2008 9:08 pm

Yeah the Risky Business thing was a bit much for me. And while i am way too old for the Jonas Brothers, at least it’s a more relevant artist for the kids in that audience.

  19. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:09 pm

Yay for the jonas brothers… (oops, did i just say that outloud?) i love that DC was in that Guitar Hero commercial…

  20. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:12 pm

why do they bring these crazy people back? and provoke them with cheerleaders and marching bands??? what are they thinking?

  21. Kat on May 21st, 2008 9:12 pm

Birdman!!!!! This is really getting to be a star-studded event.

  22. Cathy on May 21st, 2008 9:16 pm

You know, i usually hate the really bad people but for some reason i LOVE that guy. I think it’s Paula’s interpretive dancing.

  23. Give Me My Remote on May 21st, 2008 9:16 pm

That Guitar Hero commercial rocked my world!!!!

You are my brother, my best friend forever!!

  24. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:19 pm

One Republic is getting pimped out by Fox… last year they were on SYTYCD, this year AI… what label are they signed to again? oh, it’s a SLOW BALLAD…. perfect for DA since that’s all he ever sings… duh. 😛

  25. Kat on May 21st, 2008 9:22 pm

    Grandpa Archie looks like McCain.

  26. Caroline on May 21st, 2008 9:26 pm

Okay – I have to admit that little Archuletta was amazing in that One Republic song; but he has no personality. After every song is over he blinks (a lot), looks a little stunned, and then you wonder if he might fall over. Adorable boy; but we so want the MAN Cook to win tonight …sigh !

  27. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:29 pm

    30 minutes left!

  28. jenn on May 21st, 2008 9:32 pm

Iron Man!!!! I so love Robert Downey Jr. I’m very happy right now.

  29. Kat on May 21st, 2008 9:32 pm

I feel like this finale is like a lame episode of SNL – lots of things that are probably supposed to be funny, but you just don’t care enough to laugh.

  30. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:37 pm

i have mixed feelings about that “train” thing that is hanging off of Carrie’s sleeves… i want to hate it because it looks tacky but i kind of like it!

  31. Am on May 21st, 2008 9:37 pm

I must know who wins, I am at work. It’s killing me.

  32. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:41 pm

i’d much rather see DC in his undies than DA… i feel dirty seeing Baby Elmo in his skivvies… 🙁

  33. Kat on May 21st, 2008 9:43 pm

That commercial with Little David doesn’t work for me. I feel very uncomfortable watching it.

I’d love to know the results too so I can actually get started on the stuff I have to do tonight.

  34. Jenn on May 21st, 2008 9:45 pm

No David A in his undies. Now I’m traumatized.

  35. jenn on May 21st, 2008 9:47 pm

They should have done a George Michaels week. I’ve fallen in love with him again after watching Eli Stone.

  36. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 9:48 pm

They are seeming to highlight Michael Johns quite a bit in the group numbers… anyone notice that???

  37. kilwiggle7 on May 21st, 2008 10:00 pm

    The winner is…….. David COOK!!!!

  38. Kat on May 21st, 2008 10:00 pm

    Yay!!! We needed a rocker!!

  39. Jules on May 21st, 2008 10:03 pm

Wow. I’m so amazed. That’s awesome! YAY!

  40. Steve on May 21st, 2008 10:03 pm

Thanks for posting this…us West Coast Folks who can’t watch want to know NOW! 🙂 THANKS you guys!!!! I am so glad Cookie won…we LOVED his audition of Bon Jovi’s “Livin on a Prayer” and have been voting for him all season. GOOD JOB DAVID COOK!!!!!!! I would of been pissed if that monotone little shit Archuletta won. I am sure he’ll get a record deal, but he’s 1/2 the performer of David Cook or Carly for that matter. Thanks again for posting. 🙂

  41. Randi on May 21st, 2008 10:09 pm

This is the first time since Season 1 where the person that I wanted to win actually won. It’s amazing! Congratulations David Cook!!!!

    Yay!!!

  42. Niew on May 21st, 2008 10:11 pm

    CONGRATULATIONS DAVID COOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. Daz on May 21st, 2008 10:11 pm

Woohoo!! Congrats DC!! He is awesome and he definitely deserves to win.
I have been refreshing page like crazy to find out the result, for we don’t have it here in Jpn. Guess now I can (must) go back to work now.
    But once again, congrats DC!!!

  44. Kat on May 21st, 2008 10:15 pm

Ok, time for me to get back to everything I have to do (more than I can possibly do since I spent 2 hours glued here). Thoroughly enjoyed everyone’s comments!!

  45. Lisa (aka lmr) on May 21st, 2008 10:22 pm

omg, I went out for dinner and recorded and then was watching in time shift when I got home… and would you believe the recording cut as Ryan said and the winner is “David C….” I was pretty sure it was Cook he was about to say but I got robbed of the good cry. Why didn’t I switch to live when it got close to 10pm. I am so pissed at myself.

GMMR, I hope hope hope that you put up the ending tomorrow!

I am happy. I was an Archie fan but also a Cook fan so am happy and sad but would have been that way in either case.

  46. Give Me My Remote on May 21st, 2008 10:39 pm

    I”m looking for a better clip…i promise.

  47. Give Me My Remote on May 21st, 2008 10:57 pm

WOW! Lisa, it seems you aren’t the only one. TiVos and DVRs across the country cut off IDOL just as the winner was being announced. Thank god i was watching live because I would have died.

It’s hard to find a full clip of Cook’s winning moment right now because they announced it right on the hour and that screws up with RedLasso.com

  48. maggie on May 21st, 2008 11:24 pm

I’m not an avid AI watcher, but ive seen some performances. from the very beginning I knew it would be a battle of the davids. even though archie is adorable and has an amazing voice, I have to agree with somebody else who said this, but DA has no personality whatsoever, and his performances are boring. cookie, to me (dont kill me DC lovers), looks creepy. but he is a WAY better performer and MUCH MUCH more talented, and actually has a personality. I’m SO GLAD that he won!!!!!!!!!! =D

  49. Carrie on May 21st, 2008 11:29 pm

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for posting the winner like you did and then having the video clip. My damn DVR stopped just as Ryan said “and the winner is” I could have kicked the TV I couldn’t believe it. I had to jump onto the laptop to see if it was posted any where. I thought yahoo would have it but no I even went to fox’s AI site and they didnt even have it. Then I remembere your Awesome blog and sure enough you had the info!!!! Thanks again for all your hard work. I love checking your site everyday for the new tv news!!!!

  50. kilwiggle7 on May 22nd, 2008 12:19 am

Anyone notice that just before Ryan announced the results, he says something and David Cook says thank you and Archuleta tried to say something too but you couldn’t hear him… could it be that they didn’t turn on Archie’s mic because he didn’t win and knew he wouldn’t need it?

either way, i’m super happy with the result.

  51. Kristi on May 22nd, 2008 12:27 am

My God, I cried… never thought that would happen. David Cook is a just an amazing guy and I couldn’t think of a better person to win this competition. He’s got such a good heart and is so talented – it’s great to see a genuinely good person get what they want.

  52. Mandy on May 22nd, 2008 1:10 am

I’m so happy for David Cook. He seems like such a nice genuine guy. I really hope he goes far. Same with Archie. The kid has some mad talent. He just needs to work on his confidence off the stage.

For those of you that say David A. has no personality, I suggest you go and watch some of the interviews that Access Hollywood and Extra have done with the two Davids. Archie is ALWAYS cracking Cook up. The kid is funny even when he isn’t trying to be.

  53. Kris on May 22nd, 2008 1:27 am

There are no words to truly express how happy i am!

I am ecstatic that Cook won!! I mean, in another post earlier today (i think), i wanted Archuleta to win b/c i didn’t want DC to be stuck w/ an AI contract. But i am really really happy for David Cook! He is so deserving of this! I usually watch AI every season but i have never been so emotionally involved in a season than i have this season. I have been a Cook fan since day one and am so proud of him. He’s wonderful and i can’t wait to buy his cd =) Congrats to Cook!

  54. karen on May 22nd, 2008 6:21 am

Words cannot describe how excited I am! I actually screamed when he won (which is a big no-no in my house after 8:00). DC totally deserved to win. Kudos to the producers of AI., they put out a great show last night and reminded me that I love (most) of the top 12 enough to go see the Idol tour this summer!

  55. Lisa (aka lmr) on May 22nd, 2008 6:44 am

GMMR, you’re MY hero. The ending was so awesome and you enabled my good little happy cry this morning.

Wow, how adorable is he? I think he’s my new favorite winner of all seasons. And this coming from someone who likes little David. I’m not so sad for little D though as he’ll go far. I am anxiously awaiting Cook’s first record.

  56. Emily E on May 22nd, 2008 10:08 am

I was at the big viewing party here in Salt Lake for Archuleta last night. It was like a big kick in the stomach when the announcement was made. So sad! But I have to congratulate Cook…way to go, man! And Archuleta, you will always be MY American Idol. sniff sniff. 😉

  57. TerryH on May 22nd, 2008 11:46 am

First of all, a great show overall. 2 hours of entertainment. Cook looked like he was in heaven with ZZTop. I was a big David A fan all year, and also liked David C. Give little David a few years, some public speaking classes, etc and he’ll go really far. That voice cannot be beat. Cook didn’t need to win, in my opinion, to go far. But either one and I’d have been happy. I’d actually like to hear a recorded version of little David’s 2nd song, I really enjoyed it. But like Randy said all season, the kid could sing the phone book and it would sound good. Maybe that will be the name of a song on his album? But what a finale! WOO HOO!

  58. DONNA on May 24th, 2008 1:02 am

Your George Michael/Eli Stone reference is hilarious!
