SYTYCD Goes Contemporary with Twitchington/Katee & Joshua/Will & Jessica

July 3, 2008 by

Mia Michaels…how I like the things that you do. Contemporary isn’t for everyone, but it’s by far my favorite genre on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. And what Mia Michaels does as a choreographer continues to floor me.

Mia had two routines tonight. Both Contemporary. My favorite of which was performed the hell out of my Stephen “Twitch” Boss and Kherington Payne. It was out of control and a dance that I know will be remembered for a long time to come.

The second Mia routine of the night was from Joshua Allen and Katee Shean. Once again Mia brings out the best is her dancers. After watching some of these jumps you might want to remind yourself to pick your jaw up from the floor.

And Mandy Moore, one of my favorite choreographers offered us another amazing routine. She called it ‘lyrical jazz’ and I know she’s the expert and not I, but I cry foul. This is soooo a contemporary routine. And I loved how fantastic Will and (even) Jessica were last night. That shirt work was banoodles.

We’ve got a SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Podcast coming later this morning, so you’ll have your chance to comment on all the routines.

Thanks to Blogging SYTYCD for the vids.

So I’ve been watching this season, thanks to loving yours and Duckies podcasts, and wanted to follow along with the SYTYCD one’s too.

I was blown away by Katee and Joshua’s routine, and had to pause and come here and make sure I wasn’t alone, and then to find that Twitch and Kerrington had done a better one? I doubted it, until I saw it, wow!! These 2 are my fave’s and wow, tonight they both were superb.

[…] Twitchington was as my wife said “Oh Baby!”  Of course she was looking at Twitch and not the fabulously sexy Kherington Payne.  Although I must admit if I were into guys…  They drew the Paso Doble by choreographed by  Tony and Melanie.  She was fabulously hot, he was only so so, but it would be hard to be the stronger dancer here because it might overshadow his partner and he has a habit of playing her up.  Tabitha and Napolleon thought it was a slow build which is risky.  Mary Murphy called it “Full of Passion’, but just okay outside of that.  Nigel was very entertained and frankly I am with him on this Kherington’s face was beautiful, sexy, and demandinging.  Maybe she just demanded too much out Twitch this time. My sister was in the room for just the Twitchington bed routine. I looked at her part way through and said, “Can you believe he’s a hip-hop dancer?” Her unimpressed reply: “He’s just jumping around.” I wanted to smack her.

Sara A – I feel sorry for your sister that all she could see was “he’s just jumping around” because it’s was such an amazing performance, and just worked from start to finish. The stillness in some of his movements speaks more than the jumping around – and it’s a lot easier to recognise that if you watch lots of different performances. I’m sure your sister would get it if she watched the whole series up to this point.

I’ll get murdered for saying this, but I didn’t like Kherrington/Twitch’s Mia piece. It reminded me of the flower piece from last season (which I also didn’t enjoy). I’d rather see pieces like the one she did for Katee/Joshua, which I thought was brilliant. I don’t even like those two, but they danced amazing in that routine.

Poor Jessica. I feel so bad for her. No matter what she does, girl gets dumped on. I feel her days may be numbered. If I were her, I’d be hoping for it at this point. She’s not gonna have any self-confidence left if she makes it much further.

I enjoyed last night more than I have in the past few weeks. Mia is seriously a genius. (And I agree that Mandy Moore’s routine looked completely contemporary to me as well…) Still missing Shane, Wade, and Tyce – but overall a good show.

I’ve tried so so so very hard this year to watch SYTYCD. At the outset our Canadian music video channel (which rarely plays music videos anymore!) was doing marathons on Sunday and I’d catch up. But with Canadian Idol taking up 3 of my weekdays right now – I just can’t! I was fine when Mia Michaels was a judge, as I’ve developed this insane crush on her – but then she disappeared and I couldn’t care less.

However, thanks to your wonderful recaps and video clips I’ve been able to somewhat catch up – and see these lovely dancers do Mia’s work! (And see Mia being all cute too). Wow. Wonderful stuff, and thanks so much for being the superfan you are!

What a cool performance to a great song! It could have been done very badly, but this was perfect. Bravo! 🙂

I seriously want to marry Mia Michaels and have her genius babies. I have a huge crush on her too. I liked the Katee/Joshua one a bit more but enjoyed them both. I also LOVE that Mandy Moore uses all these big 80s numbers for her routines – keep the 80s alive!

Is it just me or was Nigel incredibly mean last night? He’s usually pretty fair, but he was seriously negative for most of last night (even lashing out at Mary). What was up his butt?

Please please tell me that you will post the performances from tonight’s (Thursday July3rd) Elimination show….that one guy who is an amazing dancer but not in top 20 was supposed to perform and I missed it….:(

  12. Michele on July 4th, 2008 8:50 am

Yeah – he was sick! But Nigel was pretty hard on him too – calling him a chicken for dropping out! Rough day for Nigel.

Kath, just to let you know…lyrical jazz is another name for contemporary. When I used to dance, we always called contemporary lyrical. If you go back to Season One of the show, all the contemporary routines were called lyrical, not contemporary…

I think it is just so ridiculously absurd that the judges rag on Jessica so much! As if any of the other female dancers on the show are any better than her! I think that Will is so technically trained and SO DOMINANT in personality (notice how he is always vying for camera time???) and dance style that he could make anyone feel a little put out, and theres poor Jessica, dancing her heart out and doing amazing and keeping right up with him. I profoundly disagree that Will is carrying Jessica, and that Jessica is “draining the life from the GREAT ONE.” Will’s talent is undeniable, butbut SO is jessica’s! And it makes me so angry when they tear her down MERCILESSLY for minor things, barely recognize her when she dances amazingly, and blame her if Will messes up because she is just so LAZY UNCONFIDENT AND OH SUCH A TALENTLESS BURDEN!!!!! AND WHY THE HELL AREN’T YOU CONFIDENT????????

URRRRR I really need to vent. I want to like, tell them off for her, because I can tell she is too soft spoken to do it herself. If she stays on I hope she really proves herself because she is a damn good dancer and I enjoy watching her dancing out of ALL THE GIRLS. Just because she isn’t a little wafer cracker TOOTHPICK and actually has a woman’s body— and they are always complimenting the other girls on how ASTOUNDINGLY BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE but they not once complimented her. The poor girl.

You go Jessica, girl! Don’t let them hold you down!

    Blah. *reguritates*

HUHHH I felt what Carolyn has something to say said.
It so stupid they expect Jessica (my favrite girl dancer as well) to be Ms. Confident when they tell her how terrible she is without even being constructive. And it’s all bull too because she dances her heart out and is so incredible I mean how the hek them other girls getting all the praise and she not and then she supposed to be all greatful if they just shut they mouth and not say anything rude at all it’s such bull. I think WILL is NOT a partner type he is a solo dancer I think and I think she did a verr amazing job dealing with him he seems like a DIVA no what I’m saying.
