PREVIOUS POST

Tonight we went from ten dancers down to eight when one girl and one guy went home on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.  The results were a bit of a shock (at least for me), and I can’t say I was too pleased.  Remember, this was the first week that America gets to decide who is going home.  The guy and girl with the least amount of votes has to leave.  No dancing for their lives, no judges intervening and fighting on their behalf.  It’s all about who picked up the phone to vote. But before we get to who went home, let’s take a quick look back at tonight’s results show.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Top 10

Dancing & Ditching…
Tonight the top ten opened the show with a fantastic Bollywood routine choreographed by Nakul.  The choreography, the music, the costumes – all so very beautiful.  I really love this style and I know we’ll be seeing more in the future.

After a recap of last night’s performances, the remaining five girls took to the stage in a beautiful Contemporary routine by Mia Michael.  These women really delivered tonight and I was really moved at how much raw emotion they each brought to the dance floor.  So etheral and moving.  Mia looked so pleased.   Loved it.

But just moments after the performance the ladies were informed that the two girls with the least amount of votes would be going home.  Chelsie, Katee and Courtney were told they were safe while Comfort and Kherington had to wait to the end of the show to hear which one of them were going home.

Next up, the five guys left in the competition took to the stage in a number by a mystery choregrapher.  Yeah, you just knew it had to be Nigel and it was.  Stick to judging Nigel…I thought the routine wasted the talent of these five incredible men.  Oh well.

So you know the drill, the two guys with the least votes are in danger.  And those dancers were Gev and Mark (gasp).

Comfort, Kherington, Mark and Gev took to the floor in exhibition solo routines. Again no judges can save them.  Their fate was determined by the time the phone lines closed last night.

We’ll Miss You…
For the girls, we said goodbye to Kherington Payne. Nope, I’m not kidding.  And yes, I’m crying foul.  I think that’s complete BS.  Sure Comfort’s Hip Hop routine was incredible last night, but that’s her style and she was paired with a partner whose style is also Hip Hop.  That’s cake.  I acknoledge that Kherington struggled on Wednesday and that she had moved down a few slots in my favorite list over the past few weeks, but I still think Kherington had a lot more to gain and lend this competition.

As for the boys, I kind of banked of Gev going home tonight, but when Kherington was booted I got all kinds of nervous for my boy Mark.  I would have been devastated.  But thankfully (for Mark and not for Gev), Gev was sent home.  I think he wa the right guy to send home, but I still think that Gev was one of the best contestants of this whole season.  I think he showed tremendous growth and I don’t think that was acknowledged enough by the judges during the season. We’ll miss ya little Gev.

So that’s that.  Kherington and Gev leave us.  Happy, mad, sad? What do you think of tonight’s eliminations.

Oh and P to the S.  If you’re a regular SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE Podcast listener then check back to GMMR tomorrow for the latest installment.  Dan and I put together a podcast during which we reviewed our thoughts on this week’s performances as well as tonight’s eleimination show.  I hope you enjoy it!  Should be up early tomorrow. Oh and there’s going to be a special SYTYCD contest going live this week that might make you “happy”.

I am so angry right now. Comfort is essentially this year’s Cedric, but is overstaying her welcome much further. I’m really worried for the guy who gets stuck with her as his partner next week. I like Comfort as a person, but they honestly hasn’t been a single routine that I’ve completely enjoyed of her. Both her technique and perforance abilities are lacking. Kher-bear had sooo much more to offer.

But I’m also so relieved about Mark! I started to tear up when he was placed in danger. Hopefully he’ll get Katee as a partner next week and will show off his true amazing-ness once more!

How much you wanna bet it’s Comfort and Mark next week?! If she outlasts one more person…

I am SO sad Gev left. He was my favorite guy, by far.

I am so sick of Comfort. The producers kept her around like three extra weeks just because she’s a female hip- hop dancer. Now it’s up to the audience… and I have very little faith in the audience after this week.

So what will happen if Comfort stays in the competition for 4 more weeks, will Jessica get her spot back? And is Jessica or Comfort going on tour in that 10th spot?

  5. Jodi on July 18th, 2008 2:35 am

    Erin,
Comfort won’t stay in the competition for 4 more weeks because the finale is in 3! I know…it’s gone by sooooo quickly. And they are both going on the tour.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! we can only hope that the producers see the flaws in the way this competition is run. kherington had weak performances this week, but she also was given the most rediculous dances, poor choreography, and a weak partner (for what she had to do)!!! and she had arguably the strongest performances ALL other weeks!!! and what was with the judges comments – e.g. nigel practically telling people not to vote for her!! constructive critiques on dance is one thing – other comments to many throughout the season have been out of line!!!

Slightly dissenting opinion on Kher-bear here. Although shocked also (how do we miss Comfort if she won’t go away), Kher has not been outstanding for weeks and her solos look like every other female contemporary dancer’s solo. I was a big Twitchington fan and they were my fav couple for awhile but her twinkle just started to die out. The Mr & Mrs Smith routine with Twitch lacked something. She gave up for the last 16 bars of the hip hop with Twitch.

I am sad about lil Gev, but I would have been upset about any of the men leaving.

  8. Alyson on July 18th, 2008 8:19 am

I kind saw Kherington leaving tonight coming, especially after Comfort and Twitch busted out that hip hop routine, and Kher had such an off night. She really hadn’t shined for a few weeks at this point.

I cried was incredibly sad when Gev left — he was one of my favorite dancers to watch, you could tell he really worked hard, and he actually adapted pretty well to most styles (his map routine with Courtney was one of my favorites of the season so far), but I thanked the fates that Mark was sticking around. I was sooo scared he would be leaving, and I’m at the point where I couldn’t imagine enjoying the show nearly as much without him. I swear, if he gets stuck with Comfort next week, I will be one unhappy girl. Here’s hoping for a Courtney or (preferably) Katee partnership for Mark.

  9. Gigi on July 18th, 2008 8:34 am

I was so shocked that Kherington and Gev were voted off. I would have bet money that Comfort and Mark were the dancers going home.

  10. Alyssa on July 18th, 2008 8:45 am

I gasped when Cat said it was Gev. But at this point, each of those 5 guys is amazing so I’m going to be sad each week. I think this is going to be a guy’s year to win. They’re all so fun to watch.

  11. Beth on July 18th, 2008 9:58 am

I just stood in utter shock when Cat said Kherington’s name. I really just thought it was a given that Comfort was going home- and I think Comfort thought so too. If they were going off of who deserved to go home based on past performances, it is definitely Comforts turn…but thats not how it goes in this competition!

And lil Gev, he is just so precious! He has done some incredible routines and grown so much- you could tell he put everything into his performances each week! And last night’s solo dance to the Michael Buble song- WOW!!! Loved it! I wish they could have sent 2 girls home and kept Gev! Mark is one of my favorites though so I would have been sad to see him leave…

I’m happy Kherington is gone. The two-step was AWFUL. And not just because it’s a hard dance – in the rehearsal footage they showed a very pregnant woman doing it just fine! I immediately noticed her arms, just like Nigel pointed out – when she did turns they were limp and just hanging in front of her, which is a huge no-no and a very basic thing to master. And the jazz was lifeless. Let’s face it, this was not her first bad week. The tango was terrible as well, and the judges totally let her off easy for the krumping. Yeah, she started off ok in that number, but the second half she just died. She’s looked downright terrible. She had a few good performances but wasn’t anything special, if you ask me.

Comfort is obviously not going to last (unless she does something amazing next week). And while, yes, she has shown the least versatility of all the girls, her hip-hop number this week was outstanding. I watched it about 3 times. Who cares if it was her style? Nobody complains when contemporary dancers do well in their own style.

Thank you, thank you for posting that Ballywood number. I forgot to turn the TV on before 9:04 and I had already missed it. I really love how they are incorrporating different cultures into the show this year. I’ve actually done some Indian-style dancing in my International classes and it’s really not easy at all, these guys made it look like they’ve been doing it all their lives.
Maybe we’ll get a good Israeli group number showing up one season (there are amazing Israeli choreogrophers out there and they have some of the most amazing folk dance troupes in Israel).
I have to disagree with you on the guys group number though, I thought it was really a lot of fun to watch and each of the guys brought a lot of energy to it. All the guys are so amazing, I didn’t want any of them to go home.
I was also dissapointed in Kherrington going home instead of Comfort this week. Her Waltz was really weak and you can’t really blame Kherrington for not nailing that country two-step, she’s never tried the style before and you have to dance it in cowboy boots. The pregnant woman is a professional and you don’t really use your lower body too much in this genre, it’s mostly hand work and stiff turns. If she had to demonstrate a rhumba or samba where she needed to roll her hips, it’s harder to do when pregnant (I’m carrying twins and believe me, I’ve tried, I just feel really silly trying to roll my hips and do all those sexy moves with a big belly; but I’m still dancing. I just get tired more easily). I do have to agree that Kherrington’s solos lately have not been too impressive and that could be the reason why she didn’t get as many votes. On the other hand, I’m not that impressed with Comfort’s solos either.
I’m also shocked at the guys results. I knew it would be Mark & Gev in the bottom two, but Gev’s solos are so entertaining and I think Mark’s are just missing something. They’re not at the level they should be at this point in the competition. I also felt as if he was bringing Kherrington down a bit this week. I like Mark, but I really think he deserved to go first. I’m pretty sure it will be Will & Josh as the final two guys though. But any of the guys going home breaks my heart because they are all so good. It’s going to be a guy’s year for sure.

I really expected Comfort to leave last night, but am not shocked Kherington left instead. She was so sour on Wednesday night; she seemed cranky and distant from Mark and had a “how dare they criticize me” look about her with the judges (further shown from the backstage clips last night).

Lil C was right to tell Kherington she needs to learn how to handle criticism better. I really think that’s what turned off many voters. She’s a better dancer than Comfort, but Comfort’s a better sport. Kher could learn a thing or two from Comfort’s class (and heck, Jessica could *teach* a class on how to graciously accept criticism!).

I’m glad Mark’s around for another week and hope he bounces back next week. He continues to be my favorite!

I was so angry at America this week! Although it’s guaranteed we’ll see those two brilliant dancers again on the tour, it was so sad to see them go! Voters didn’t consider the overall scope of work Kherington performed throughout the season, and based their votes off one amazing hip-hop routine – Comfort’s genre and paired with Twitch, a crowd favorite, so Kherington didn’t get a fair chance.

And, as much as I love Marc, Gev grew so much this season and performed so consistently well, I mean he went from a street dancer to this versatile character that I loved. Oh well, I guess life isn’t fair!

  16. Jennifer on July 19th, 2008 9:44 pm

I liked Kherington but in the last 3 weeks, there’s been 1 number where I’ve seen her give up at a certain point in the routine. Her solos are also lackluster – I think she’s just a young dancer that will find her dancing “voice” in time; right now there’s nothing in her solos that makes her an individual and unique dancer.

Love your and Dan’s joint podcast — I’ve listened to every SYTYCD installment so far.

I think Gev was robbed — in the sense it should have been Twitch with Mark in the Bottom 2, and Twitch should have left. Love him and his personality, but he’s the least versatile of the Top 5 guys.

I really liked what you had to say about story arc and Gev in response to Shankman’s comments!

And finally, I know you’re going to Comic Con, but everyone else: If you love Mark, VOTE for him like crazy tonight, because I don’t think he’s going to be getting much help from the judges.
