SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Top 6

(I’m sorry for not posting the videos of last night’s dances.  No one put them on YouTube and I’m out of luck with RedLasso since it’s been shut down byt the big bad mean networks.)

The top 6 perform tonight and damn it’s going to be strange not to see Will performing tonight. As I was traveling last week and didn’t have the chance to comment, I must say that I was disappointed to see Will go. My money was on him being one of the last guys standing. But at this point in the competition it’s so tough to see anyone leave (except for Comfort) that there is really no good choice.

But let’s keeping the elimination talk until Thursday night when the final two dancers are sent home setting us up for next week’s finale. What? The finale? Seriously, this season flew by.

Joining Mary and Nigel tonight is one of my favorite “jidges” – Adam Shankman.  How I love the Shanks!

Courtney & Mark – Viennese Waltz by Jason Gilkison
Talk about some beauty up on that stage. Mark and Courtney exuded chemistry and they both danced beautifully and effortlessly. I don’t know what I’m always looking for in these ballroom dances, but when i think of the Waltz I always want that feeling of floating on air and I certainly saw that tonight. I loved it! Shankman was a big fan. (Oh look Paula is in the audience). Mary Murphy, our resident ballroom expert, thought it floated across the floor and was very pleased. Nigel thought it was beautifully romantic.

Chelsie’s solo – I’m glad that Chelsie never had to dance for her life because her solos are always so weak. I think tonight’s had more energy that her past solos but they really are lacking. She just does the same move over and over again. And I know it’s hard for a partner dancer but look back to what past contestants like Heidi from S2 did. Her solos were fantastic. But I guess the solos don’t matter all that much at this point in the competition.

Twitch’s solo – Now that Will is gone, I definitely look forward to Twitch’s solos more than anyone else’s. He always brings something so special to his routine and tonight was no different. He’s just so entertaining. Ok enough about Twitch, can we talk about Cat Deely in those glasses and fake teeth? I thought I had fallen as deeply in love with her as I could and then she goes and does that. Brilliant.

Katee & Joshua – Contemporary by Tyce Diorio
Before we get to the dance, can I just apologize to Tyce because I’ve been spelling his name wrong for three seasons now. I always right Tyce D’Orio and it’s Diorio. I feel like such a fraud. How has no one called me out on that? Sorry Tyce.

Ok, on to the dancing. Katee & Joshua were reunited and it felt oh so good. Like damn good. Mad kudos to Tyce for choreographing a gorgeous routine. Some of those lifts were banoodles. how about the one where Katee jumped into the air and Joshua caught her under the legs? Are you kidding me? These two are the only two dancers in the competition that could have pulled off this routine. Not only because of their strength as dancers but because of the trust level that is so obviously there. Both Adam and Mary thought it was he best routine of the season. All three judges gave it a standing ovation (although it was a bit forced upon by Nigel).

Twitch & Chelsie – Mambo by Tony & Melanie
This is right in Chelsie’s wheelhouse so I’m expecting big things. But for Twitch, well, he’s struggled with ballroom all season. And as the two took the floor there was a ton of energy and a lot of sexy shaking of the hips. Twitch was really working it. But as the routine went on it got sloppy. There were a few missed connections on the turns and on some of the dips. I couldn’t tell if Chelsie was early or Twitch wasn’t there for her, but it was noticeable. The judges certainly had some issues but the good outweighed the bad, and all the judges gave props to Twitch for performing at the level he did.

Katee’s solo – Katee was up next with her solo. She always delivers. She was great. I’m not sure what else there is to say.

Joshua’s solo – Joshua solo was incredible, but the battle in the battle of the Hip Hoppers the torch goes to Twitch who just owns the musicality of his solos.

Courtney & Mark – Jazz – Sonya Tayeh
I think that Mark should work with Sonya for the rest of his dancing life because he so just gets her quirkiness. Or maybe she gets him. Either way it was a fantastic routine for both of them. I worry that it might be a little too out there for the voting audience but I thought it was sick. There was so much going on and so many sassy moments. Both dancers really brought out the characters, although Mark took it to a whole other level. I LOVED it!! Shankman thought it was ‘so sick’ – he went crazy for it. All the judges were really excited about the dancing and the choreography. Courtney and Mark both needed big nights tonight as their competitors are such fan favorites, but they did what they needed to do and perhaps more in both their routines. Yay!

HAPPY DANCE!! HAPPY DANCE!!!

Katee & Joshua – Paso Doble by Jason Gilikson
Now that’s the Paso Doble I’ve been waiting for all season. It was intense and dirty, just how I like it (um, in a choreographed routine on SYTYCD). These two are just fantastic together. What a pairing! Joshua is so strong and Katee always brings so much to ever routine she does. She looks like this little girl but then she gets out there are just owns the dance floor. The music was crazy perfect and really set the tone for the routine. What a great night all around for all the dancers. And the judges…well they were all crazy excited for this routine.

Courtney’s solo – Courtney’s solos have been my favorite of all the ladies this season. She brings so much to it and leaves it all out on the dance floor and tonight she didn’t disappoint.

Mark’s solo – Mark’s solo left me wanting a bit more, but not in a good way. I think he wasted some precious time on the stage

Chelsie & Twitch – Hip Hop – Tabitha & Napoleon Dumo
You can’t help but wonder if this routine wasn’t inspired by one of Twitch’s solo routines earlier in the season. Both were tales of a hip hop conductor and there were certainly some similarities. I really liked this routine. What a story it told. Both Twitch and Chelsie really sold their characters.  The judges were big fans.

All around a pretty incredible night of dance.  There really wasn’t a weak routine all night.  What a way to enter next week’s finale.

My final four. The four dancers that I want to see in the finale? This is a really tough one. Much tougher than in past seasons. Honestly  I don’t think I can choose. My gut says that the final two guys should be Joshua and Mark, but that means Twitch would leave us and I hate to think of a finale without Twitch.  But if Twitch stays then Mark would go and he has been incredible all season long and he deserves to be there.

For the girls, I’m equally as stressed.  Katee is a shoe-in.  Leaving Courtney and Chelsie.  A few weeks back I would have picked Chelsie hands down, but I’ve really grown to love Courtney. She’s really come so far in the competition and has shown such growth.

Ugh…it’s just too hard to choose.  And you know what?  I’m not going to.  Let’s see how it plays out on Thursday and we’ll go from there.

What were YOUR thoughts on last night’s performances?  Who do YOU want to see in next week’s finale?

I thought the hip hop routine was great… especially once I realized the song was Ms. Jackson’s Control. If my husband hadn’t pointed it out to me, I would have never have gotten it. I really think final four is going to be Twitch, Joshua, Katee and Courtney. Feel bad for Mark and Chelsie, but I just didn’t care for the solo at all. But, at this point, nothing is going to surprise me like Will leaving last week did. Nothing at all.

I am with you on your final four. As sad as I will be if Twitch goes, I think Mark has grown so much and Josh is the BOMB! I feel like Chelsie is one trickin’ it at this point. She is like Comfort/Hip Hop. How many times can she pull out a ballroom routine? I don’t think she has grown as much as the other remaining dancers.

Last night’s show is what the last few weeks SHOULD have been. It’s supposed to be HARD to see people go. This is the first week it will be hard for me to see anyone go.

The Courtney/Mark jazz was my favorite of the night! It was “sick”! I loved that Shankman used that word LOL

My ideal top 4 would be: Courtney, Mark, Twitch and Katee. But more than anything, I just hope Courtney pulls through. I think she deserves it.

All of Mark’s routines were mind blowing tonight, last week he let me down with his ballroom dance but last night, WOW.Blew me away!
Who I want in the top 4, MARK!MARK!MARK! Lol, and chelesie, courtny(or i guess katte) and joshoua

  6. Haya on July 31st, 2008 2:01 pm

Mark was crazy good last night! I want the final 4 to be Mark, Courtney, Twitch, and Chelsea. Ive never liked Joshua and Katee, I dont see what the big deal is with them. I feel like Courtney’s a better contemporary dancer than Katee, and although Joshua may be slightly more verstile than Twitch, Twitch brings something unique to the competition.

My top 4 has to include Mark and Joshua; and as entertaining as Twitch is I feel better knowing I’ll see him at the finale as he had some memorable routines this year.

On the ladies side, I agree Katee’s a shoe-in. I’d love to see Courtney in the final 4; but would not be heart-broken if it was Chelsie. It’s really a toss up between the two.

I think no matter what it’s going to be a tough night 🙁

My pick for the Final Four is Joshua, Twitch, Katee and Chelsie. I would like Courtney to be there, but I think more people will vote for Chelsie. And I’ve bever gotten why people like Mark. He’s good, but he doesn’t make me want to watch him.

Thank you for pointing out exactly what I was thinking….LOVE having the Shanks back (he has great comments although this week was all about the love–they’ve had enough constructive criticism for the season it seems)….Courtney’s solo was by far the best of the girls (again)….Mark’s solo was lacking (but I love him)….Chelsie’s solo’s are…yawn….every routine that Katee and Joshua are in (separate partners or together) have such SKILL and really are the best (how many times have they said “best routine of the season” to Katee?)….before I thought definitely Katee and Chelsie in the finale, but Courtney has come on like gangbusters (basically since Gev left–hmm–connection?). That one is a toss-up between Chelsie and Courtney to be with Katee.

As a side note, I think Katee got the “good” draws out of the hat this season. Some of those routines that the others got stuck with were not good (Sonya’s routines are hit-and-miss for me). Remember the Rayven Hip Hop routine by NappyTabs? That was nothing like the No Air routine that Katee and Josh got to do. What if Katee had the Hip-Hop Detention routine with Mark? What would that have looked like?

Twitch looked SO skinny when he was in that Mambo costume! I like his personality a lot, but he doesn’t grasp the “other” dances in the confident way that Joshua does. My pick for the finale is definitely Josh and Mark.

I will be happy if either Joshua, Katee, or Mark win this competition. For some reason, Chelsie’s personality kinda rubs me the wrong way but I don’t know exactly what it is. I really like her dancing but it’s almost like she tries to upstage her partner (maybe just the latin dances) as opposed to the way Katee really blends with her partner no matter who it is. We haven’t gotten to see Katee dance with Mark yet, so I hope they both stay.

I will miss you when you’re gone SYTYCD!!! I’ll have to settle for repeats on You Tube.

This is the first time this season that I actually missed the whole show. The routines all sounded so amazing. I wish we could see video. Darn those networks. They should post them on the Fox site if they’re going to force other sites to pull the content.

Anyway, even without seeing the routines I can tell you that I favor Josh & Twitch for the finale. Mark’s solos never impress me and I just don’t think that he has as much talent as the other two. Josh is just amazing at everything.

I think for the girls I’d like Chelsie & Courtney (even though I’m sure Katee will make it through). Something has bothered me about Katee’s personality since Vegas week and it’s never gotten better for me no matter how talented she is. I’d really be unhappy if she wins the whole competition since she almost killed her own chances of making it into the top 20 with her attitude. I’m not going to deny that she’s a talented, strong dancer, but this competition is about finding America’s favorite dancer and that includes personality. I won’t be voting for Katee if she makes it to the final 4.

Solos should be important throughout the entirety of the show! I know what you mean, and feel exactly as you do… I figured the finalists should be all around great dancers…

  12. Alyson on July 31st, 2008 8:35 pm

Mark was never sexier than he was last night. I definitely wanted to be Courtney dancing the waltz with him. I really hope he pulls through to the final four. And that jazz routine was just crazy banoodles.

I’m also pulling for Courtney, who I think has surpassed Chelsie in the past weeks.

I’d be more sad to see Twitch go than Josh, but I think Josh has earned his spot more, and while I’m not a Katee fan at all, she was beyond good in that contemporary routine last night.

  13. Sof on August 1st, 2008 9:57 am

I love Courtney’s solos. I never want them to end. I feel like she always tells a story.
I cannot pick the top four! I love them all1

Does anyone know the name of the song that was playing during mark and courtney’s jazz routine last night?
