GOSSIP GIRL’s School Yard Fashion

Gossip Girl Cast

Clearly there are other things that I should be thinking and blogging about, but I’ve got a GOSSIP GIRL question that I’m hoping someone can answer.  It’s been plaguing me for some time now.  What’s the deal with the school uniforms?  It seems to vary from episode-to-episode as to whether or not the kids are wearing the proper school attire.  And I use the word “proper” somewhat ironically as there is nothing proper about the length of Serena’s school uniform skirt. I’m not saying she doesn’t look hot, but come on now.

But all school girl fantasies aside…aren’t school uniforms usually a mandatory thing? Doesn’t everyone have to wear them?  Isn’t that the point? Why do some, like Dan and Nate, always seem to be in the school garb while others like Blair and Chuck wear whatever they like?

And since I’m asking, what’s the deal with multiple uniforms for the same school? By its very definition, shouldn’t a uniform be uniformed?

Gossip Girl Uniforms

Gossip Girl Uniforms...WTF?

I like to think that perhaps Blair, Chuck and others have earned enough Pirate Points to get out of wearing the uniforms.  Then again I also like to bring everything back to “Veronica Mars” (RIP) so there’s that.

Thoughts on the school uniform policy?

I’m thinking maybe they just have a strict dress code and not an actual uniform. But it’s not like that’s the most questionable thing on the show.

Haya might be right about it being a dress code instead of a uniform. Then they’d just have to wear certain colors and certain types of clothes.

I went to a private school and we had a uniform with a bunch of variations depening on the season. There was the jumper, the skirt and vest, the skirt with a sweater, shorts and blouse and pants and blouse. There may even have been more.

I’m so glad you noticed this! it has been bothering me since the first season – especially the length of Serena’s skirt – especially when she is standing on the steps of the MET. haha.

I think it has more to do with the costume department not wanting to have everyone where the same thing every episode – but it definitely is my pet peeve about this show.

As a girl who has to wear a uniform to school EVERY DAY, it’s kinda weird.

The year I started, they switched the kilts to a skort, so there was always a difference in that for three year. There are also two kinds of sweaters, v-neck or crew neck. Spring unifom has a polo, while winter is the sweater with button down. My private school has no variations, so it seems kinda random and crazy. (Or a crazy random happenstance) Damn strick dress codes.

    loved the veronica mars reference!

yeah my school had uniforms like this- we had a lot to choose from… it sort of softened the blow of having to wear uniforms. As far as Serena’s Skirt? that just depends on teachers. We used to get our skirts hemmed like that but could only wear them like that around certain teachers. No male history teacher is going to tell a teenage girl that the length of her skirt is giving him a boner.

I went to a private school with no uniform, but a definite strict dress code, and the outfits on the show have been bothering me since day one! Especially the little things, if the guys have to wear ties, they should be tied properly, and tightly, no dangling around the neck. At my school, it was only acceptable to loosen your tie if the headmaster deemed it ok because it was so hot out! As for Serena, we all know about her skirt length, but again, if she’s wearing a tie, don’t you think a collared shirt would be madatory. I don’t want to hate on the costume department, but I’d tighten it up a little.

I got to a private school in Australia and uniform regulations are INSANE! To begin with there are no variations whatsoever. You must where the exact shirt as sold by the school uniform shop you can’t just get any shirt from anywhere. Girls have to wear a tie which sucks and everyone has the exact same skirt and jumper (pullover) we also have to wear a crested blazer and tights and even school shoes have to be the same. Tie has to be done tight and the skirt must be exactly two centimetres above the knee (no joke, they measure). If your uniform isn’t perfect you get a “uniform slip”, two uniform slips and you get a detention. You even get a uniform slip if you don’t have a school colour ribbon in your hair! There is not customisation of uniform whatsoever lol! I am so jealous of the gorgeous gossip girl uniforms!

uhh, so, the picture at the top isnt loading, and i have never gotten a good look at the uniforms. can someone explain the uniforms to me? :S 🙂

The school uniform on Gossip Girl is highly unconventional. I went to a private school during highschool and my uniform was mandatory. The uniforms were so traditional and strict. I was unable to express my style, my friends were unaware of my fashion savvy because they were use to seeing me in uniform. The uniform displayed in Gossip Girl is actually stylish and I believe most girls would consider wearing it. The skirts may be short, but as long as they are not showing cleavage I don’t think its life and death. Maybe more private schools should let some famous designers, design the school uniforms. Since they have more funding than state schools, and they want the students to wear the uniforms why not spice it up a little. The skirts don’t have to be like the ones on gossip girl they can be a little longer, but wearable.

I go to a private girls school atm and my school uniform is mandatory and they are very VERY strict with it. No variations at all. They are also very strict with hair ribbons, jewelry, makeup, hair style etc. i envy gossip girl’s uniform! i wish my school had crossties instead of just ties! they’re are so much more feminine..
