DAMAGES is Back with Another Killer Season…And I’m Finally Watching!

January 7, 2009 by

I know, I know.  I should have listened to all, well, everybody when they were telling me just how good DAMAGES was. I was told time and time again that I should be watching. Lesson learned – I will now heed the advice of others or risk missing out on some amazing storytelling.

The important thing is that I am watching…now. (Better late than never, right?)

I’m 8 episodes into the first season of DAMAGES with 5 more to go until what I can only expect will be a fascinating season finale.  [PLEASE DON’T SPOIL ME] I must say that with the exception of LOST there hasn’t been a show that has caught my attention in this particular way for quite some time now.  I am completely enthralled with the plot, and like the very best kinds of books I have to force myself to put it away or else risk a zombie like state due to lack of sleep.

The writing is superb, but really, it’s all about the acting.  I’m talking off the charts amazing acting. I’ll be honest with you, I may have rolled my eyes a few times during awards season when Glenn Close was receiving all her accolades.  There was a part of me that thought perhaps she was getting the recognition simply because she was a legendary screen actress.  I was right, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t deserved. The woman is legendary and that can’t be ignored. What Glenn Close brings to the role of Patty Hewes is so intense and so bewildering that I am completely mesmerized by her.  The complexity of her character and the fact that she does not give an inch away in terms of Patty’s masterplan is stunning.  The way she seamlessly shifts from passionate lawyer, to cunning evil doer, to exasperated mother is fascinating. Eight episodes in and I have no idea who this woman really is – and I’m not sure I will ever know. I don’t know if I want to know.

DAMAGES would be good enough it were just Glenn Close doing what she does, but the supporting cast is equally incredible.  We are spoiled by the ensemble that brings to life these stories.  And much like Patty Hewes, every other character seems to have this deep complexity, a real mutli-layered fusion of good and evil. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by newcomer (at least to me) Rose Byrne.  She brings so much to the role of Ellen, and I can’t wait to finish this first season to see the full wrath of her character [PLEASE DON’T SPOIL ME].  And Ted Danson.  Really…who knew Sam Malone had that much in him?  Arthur Frobisher is a fantastic character and Ted plays him to perfection.  I really could mention each and every cast member, but it’s not necessary, because they are all that good.  Not a weak one in the bunch.

For those of you who were like me and missed out on the first season, get caught up.  I’m serious.  Go out and buy the first season on DVD.  It’s only 13 episodes so it’s not too daunting of a task.  DAMAGES is one of those shows that makes you appreciate just how far television has come in terms of telling incredible stories. I’m only 8 episodes in and I can already say that DAMAGES is one of the best TV dramas to come along in a long time.

And to those of you who are already fans.  My apologies for preaching to the choir.  But I hope you are excited for tonight’s Season 2 premiere (10pm on FX).  I had hoped to be all caught up so I could watch along with you, but unfortunately that’s not going to happen.  But I do plan on finishing up season 1 by this weekend, so we can start watching together next week.

So what can you expect tonight? (Note: I’m posting the episode description and video without looking at them because as I may have mentioned a few times, I don’t want to be spoiled!)

Fresh off her legal victory over billionaire CEO Arthur Frobisher, Patty is taking a break from the law and pouring her energies into her new charitable foundation. But when Patty receives a call from Daniel Purcell, a man from her past, she finds herself entangled in a case with personal and professional repercussions, the likes of which she could never have imagined.

If you are a fan of DAMAGES then shout it from the rooftops.  Or at least tell me about it in the comments below [PLEASE DON’T SPOIL ME]. Will you be watching along with me this season?

I absolutely cannot wait for Season 2! I was also a latecomer to the show. I saw a re-run of the premiere a few months back and immediately downloaded the whole season. I won’t spoil you at all because the best part of that show is how everything is revealed to you! You have a will of iron to have posted the description without reading it. When I was watching the show in iTunes i removed the descriptions so I wasn’t tempted to spoil myself! Enjoy finishing Season 1 and I’m so glad your on board for Season 2!

Glad you’ve been catching up! I can’t wait for tonight; should be good stuff.

Glenn Close doesn’t even know her character is especially her background. Season 2 will explore her past more and we will gain more insight of who she is.
Rose Byrne’s character Ellen does a complete 180 going from the naive, green behind the ears law school grad to looking for revenge this season.
Fantastic acting by both of these classy ladies.
