AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW: Dance Decathalon

February 27, 2009 by

It all came down to tonight’s performances.  Which two crews had enough to bring them into next week’s finale?  The the final three crews – Quest, Beat Freaks and Fly Khicks – took the stage in a Dance Decathalon in a battle for our votes.  One crew was eliminated and the other two gut a stamp on it with one last dance.  Now it’s time for us to vote.  But first let’s talk about tonight’s show (or last night depending on when you’re reading this).

My apologies for the video.  It’s best I could find on YouTube.

The Beat Freaks

This is the first time in a long time that I wasn’t really into the Beat Freaks.  They were kind of a mess tonight.  Their dancing was all over the place. They were stuck in their heads from beginning to end.  There was this one section when they were “tutting” (is that what it’s called?) and they had all these levels going on, but that was about it for me.  I LOVE the Beat Freaks and I was disappointed they didn’t bring us more.  But they are in the finals and that’s all I could ask for.

On the other hand, Quest Crew – sooo sick tonight! They have so much style and bring so much ingenuity to their routines.  I never know who to watch during Quest routines because everyone is off doing something visually interesting. I am always amazed at what these guys can get their bodies to do. The “tutting” section was again my favorite but some of the flips were crazy tonight too. They killed it tonight. All three judges were on their feet tonight. Nice job, boys! Quest Crew FTW!!!

Rounding out the night were The Fly Khicks. I know I’m going to get some hate for this, but I thought the ladies of The Fly Khicks were better than The Beat Freaks tonight.  I did.  They were cleaner and overall more interesting to watch.  That being said, The Beat Freaks are the superior crew – no doubt about that.  One of the problems with The Fly Khicks is that there are weak links within the group.  Some of the dancers are strong while others consistently look like they are struggle to keep up.  Congrats ladies for making it this far.

The judges have made their decision and competing for YOUR vote and the title of America’s Best Dance Crew is QUEST CREW and BEAT FREAKS!

As this is my first season watching ABDC,  I wasn’t expecting this final dance off tonight.  What a treat!

For this last challenge, Quest and Beat Freaks got to create their own ideal performance.  From the music to the routine, it was all original.

The Beat Freaks went first and they were tight.  They created an old school hip hop routine that was executed well while being a lot of fun. I can’t say thew blew it out of the water, but I loved how they showcased each of the dancers.  They deserve to be in the final two.  If you are a Beat Freaks fan I hope you voted.

Closing out the night were my boys of Quest Crew. All due respect to The Beat Freaks but come on that was insane!!  There might have been other routines where we saw more interesting flips and tricks but tonight’s final routine really focused in on the musicality and theatrics which have always been the strength of Quest Crew.  The head spins on the piano and then Ryan playing it in the middle of the routine?! What?!

And that’s it.  VOTE NOW! Your vote will decide this year’s America’s Best Dance Crew!

Voting will be kept open until 1am on March 5th so vote NOW and vote often.

That flip at the end for Quest was insane! That is what put them over the top for me. Especially when you look at their two performances together. They are clearly the winners in my eyes. QUEST CREW! The ladies did well and it would be great to have a female crew take the win, but you have to judge them on their performance. Quest crew just did better tonight than the Beat Freaks.

I am voting for Quest Crew. They consistently have been at the top for me. I love the style and sass of the Beat Freaks, but I have been fans of Ryan, Dominic, and Hok since SYTYCD and they (as well as the rest of the guys) are amazing! Can’t wait for the finale!

Quest has definitely been the more consistent crew and they destroyed it in this episode. I’ve heard some Beat Freaks backers say that one episode doesn’t make a winner. Even if it were true (and I wholeheartedly disagree that BF has been better over the season), this was the equalizer episode. This showed what each crew can do when given the same music and parameters. So of course this episode matters more. Despite the clear bias from the judges in favor of the Beat Freaks (I think Lil Mama’s criticism this week was the first time I haven’t heard them gush) I can’t think of a single episode where the BF out-danced Quest–including the controversial magic trick episode. I also find it laughable that some criticism I’ve seen says that Quest is just about tricks–yet most of the hype around BF is about their so-so headspins and other flashy breaking moves. I used to love BF. I think they’re all highly qualified and I can see why folks wanting a female crew to win would pick them–it’d be hard to imagine a better, more legitimate all-female crew. But to me they’re like Super Crew–talented but generally flat, uncharismatic and over reliant on their cred. Quest has the charisma and talent for the win!

The last Quest flip is one of the coolest things I have seen. It’s not as difficult as some of the other flips, or the elbow air flairs, or even the one handed hopping hand stand while threading with the legs… but visually it was awesome.

Beat Freaks are great, but I think part of the greatness is that they are women doing these things. Quest crew does everything BF can do but makes it look so easy. Maybe they took a week or two off due to laziness, and the judges are a LOT harder on Quest than any other group, but overall they are the best. I want to see the Jabbawockeez or Kaba Modern team up to choreograph for Quest crew.

    Quest!!!

BF are awesome dancers, but for real, Quest has always been bringing it since day one. I feel like BF is most strongest when they’re breaking and stuff, but they do some of the same stuff over and over. It’sawesome to see them like that, but…

Quest has got the whole package.

    Sorry.

    QUEST!

I’ve always liked the Beatfreaks but I am voting Questcrew. They are the best –no if, ands or buts about it. They have continually showed originality and passion. I get chills everytime I watch their performances. Especially their last performance, that was just crazy and showed their passion – the piano and everything. Love them, love them, love them. And overall they are just supernice, funny guys.

    Quest for the win!
