AMERICAN IDOL: Top 36 (Group 3) - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

AMERICAN IDOL: Top 36 (Group 3)

March 3, 2009 by

Are you ready for the next 12? Who will make it through? And how many of us knew that Lil Rounds was going to get the pimp spot tonight?  Oh IDOL producers, give us a little credit, please.

My AMERICAN IDOL recap is going to be a little more direct tonight. I love breaking down the performance of each contestant, but tonight I think it’s going to be a little more of my gut reaction.  Sister needs some sleep!

Let’s go at it.

Von Smith – The screamer reads his own press and he promises he’s not going to yell at us tonight. Whew. He was a little screamy but not too bad.  He doesn’t have a bad voice but unless everyone else after him bombs, he’s not going to be moving on.

Taylor Vaifanu – Good voice, but not great.  She was all over the place on the stage.  Very distracting.

Alex Wagner-Trugman – Smooth voice but so awkward. So very awkward.  He kept doing all these bizarre growls.  Horrible.  I think he tried to rock it out.  I think.  Miserable.  Adios.

Arianna Afsar – She was off pitch from the start and she lacks the ability to switch from a low to higher octave. Really bad. Of all the songs she could have chosen she goes with “The Winner Takes it All” by ABBA? No way. Even her parents weren’t really clapping for her.

Ju’Not Joyner – I remember this guy and I remember really liking him. But I also remember him singing “Hey There Delilah” in Hollywood Week, so did he have to sing it again tonight? Maybe not, but I like what he did with the melody though.  He turned a quirky anthem into a sexy and soulful R&B love song.  Well done.  Really well done.

Kristen McNamara – A re-imagined, jazzy take on Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One” was original and contemporary.  It reminded me Duffy a little. The beginning was stronger than the ending, but in whole I think it worked.

Nathaniel Marshall – This kid has to be outstanding tonight to get my vote because he irks me that much. He wasn’t awful, but he wasn’t all that either. I don’t know if Meatloaf’s “I Would Do Anything for Love” was the best song for him, but I think for someone it could be a great song because it shows off some serious range.

Felicia Barton – The girl who almost didn’t make it. It wasn’t perfect but on the whole I think it was a solid performance. Nice voice.  I want to see more from her. So far she’s my leading gal.

Scott MacIntyre – He’s singing a Bruce Hornsby song and that about sums up who Scott would be as a recording artist.  He’s an adult contemporary singer, and not the next American Idol. Decent vocals, but not the best. I think the judges were pandering to him a little I think.

Kendall Beard – A pretty girls but the vocals weren’t good enough to bring her into the next round. She wasn’t horrible, but I can’t see people picking up the phone to vote for her.

Jorge Nunez – Am I supposed to take this guy seriously with those eyebrows? Things got better for me when I shut my eyes so I didn’t have to look at him.  Strong vocals.  Perhaps the strongest of the night.  I thought he was fantastic. I’m expecting that we are going to see more of Jorge next week.

Lil Rounds – Fantastic! Lil Rounds was the consumate performer tonight.  She was confident and comfortable.  She did everything she needed to do tonight for me.  Brilliant.  She deserves to go through.

Who I WANT to go through: Ju’Not Joyner, Lil Rounds and Felicia Barton.

Who I THINK will go through: Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nunez

Thoughts on each of the performances?  Who do you WANT to make it and who do you THINK will make it?

I concur with your assessments, GMMR, I thought overall it was a good night and a far sight better than last week. I am a little cheesed that last week’s 12 was just kinda so so but this week had more than 3 I’d like to see again. I’m with you on Felicia, I like her a lot.

I agree with the three you want to go through, and about who you think actually will go through. I’m not a Jorge fan; something about him bothers me. And even though I feel awful for saying it, I think you’re right that the judges were pandering to Scott McIntyre. He really doesn’t deserve to make it through.

I’m a fan of Felicia; I hope she makes the wild card.

I agree with your picks and wish they were the ones getting through. Felicia definitely should have make it on her own before some of the girls we’ve seen. I think it was the producers good fortune to have to kick out that other girl as well as Felicia’s. They are definitely going to need more girl for the top 12 and I think she should be one of them.

I also felt like they were praising Scott for something that any other contestant would have gotten ripped for. He was off key on some parts and the song selection was terrible. He’s blind and has overcome that but that’s not what this competition is about. We are looking for a successful recording artist that can appeal to the masses….he ain’t it.

Want to go through: Ju’Not, Lil Rounds, Jorge
Will go through: Lil Rounds, Jorge, Scott M

Scott making it through because the judges lavished over him. So annoying!

Bring on the wild card. I have about 5-6 people I to see contending for this. Doubtful it will go who I want it to.

Adam …is back for what? Had he not got the 2nd place last year ?
I saw some familiar faces and i would recommend that those who had reached
the top 3 should not have come back ? I believe there are other who wish to participate but when they see some old faces so they prefer to stay away???
