Who Made It Through on AMERICAN IDOL – Wild Card Round

March 5, 2009 by

If you hate IDOL I don’t know how you are hanging out at GMMR these days.  I’d apologize but I love this show so much that I can’t help but cover it.  But I appreciate you dealing with it. This is the last time it will be four days of IDOL.  We’re almost to a more normal schedule.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about tonight’s Wild Card round.  Eight singers handpicked by the judges are coming back to compete for the final three slots in the Top 12.  But tonight they’re not singing for your vote.  It’s all up to the judges. And let’s face it, barring a complete meltdown, they know exactly who they are going to put through.

Jesse Langseth was up first tonight. The girl can sing. I actually love her voice. But she could never get me to pick up the phone and vote her for her. She irks me too much.

Next up was one of my favorites, Matt Giraud. I think he redeemed himself with tonight’s performance. I thought he was so amazing tonight. But I don’t know if the judges were off their chairs in love with him.

The judges are in love with Megan Korkrey. I think some of YOU are too. I don’t get it.  Despite being different and quirky, she is so far from my favorite. I would be shocked if the judges don’t put her through.  She is one of their favorites.

Von Smith was horrendous tonight.  I don’t know if he started in a key that was too high or what, but it was a wreck. Best of luck, Von.  You’re done tonight.

Jasmine Murray definitely had better vocals tonight but she’s still more look than talent. The judges like the  look and they need girls so I think she’ll go through.  Simon called the performance “special”. Are you kidding me?

Ricky Braddy. who I think might be the most vocally talented guy in this year is giving it his all tonight. If the judges don’t bring him through then they should be slapped.  He has the voice, the look, the personality and he owned the stage. Simon is anti-Ricky and Randy is pro-Simon.

[OK I’m officially over Randy. Does he watch this show?  How can breath that far up Simon’s ass? Every single week, hell every single contestant it’s the same thing “I’ve got to agree with Simon on this one”, “I’m going to go with Cowell”.  It’s obvious Randy doesn’t have a set, and nothing to bring to the show.  Why am I think annoyed?  Ugh, I don’t know.]

Tatiana del Toro sang the same Whitney Houston song again.  Um, when did she get such a thick accent? She’s trying to go all Jorge Nunez on us.  The girl can sing.  She is a complete joke, but she can sing. I’d be offended if the judges pur her through because America hates her.  But she sang better than Jasmine Murray, hands down.  I love that Paula called her out on her fake accent. And yes! Tatiana actually said she was like Jorge.

Anoop DeSai is back with his Hollywood Week winner “My Prerogative”. The perfect song for him.  Judges have been a little anti singing the same songs, but he killed it.  Anoooooooooop!!!  Love this guy! And the audience went all kinds of crazy.

The judges have conferred and the three contestants moving on to the Top 12 are…

  • Jasmine -YES.  An embarrassing choice for the show. Shame on you judges.
  • Ricky  – NO. Didn’t make it.  Another embarrassment for the judges.
  • Tatiana – NO. Thank good god. She is an embarrassment to herself. The way she went on and on. Ugh. Tatiana’s gone!!  Holla!
  • Megan – YES. Of course you knew she was going to make it through.

[LOL moment – Megan getting left high and dry trying to give Jasmine a high five.]

  • Von – NO. That’s the right call.
  • Matt – YES. YES! YES! YES!
  • Jesse – NO. The judges loved her but there was no competing with Anoop.
  • Anoop – YES. Yipee! They made it a Top 13 this year so Anoop could play along.

Your 2009 Top 13 are: Danny, Alexis, Michael, Adam, Allison, Kris, Jorge, Lil, Scott, Jasmine, Megan, Anoop and Matt

OH good god, Ryan’s comment! It was too hard to explain so I figured I would wait until it was posted on YouTube. But that was hysterical!

Tatiana on her knees in front of the judges table was ridiculous. That girl needs to seek therapy.

I think it’s really sad that Ricky Braddy didn’t make it; he’s given the best vocals of the season, but is overlooked because he doesn’t have a good back story. The fact that Jasmine Murray made it through instead of him kind of makes me sick. I hope she goes home early, along with Michael Sarver.

Really happy that Anoop and Megan made it through, and glad that Matt G. was able to redeem himself.

For some reason, I’m not really that into AI this season like the other seasons, and I don’t know why that is. I’m just really glad that Anoop made it! He’ll be the reason I watch.

  7. Megan on March 5th, 2009 10:08 pm

    Goooo Anooooooooop!!!!!

I am so glad he got through!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m also glad about the other people.

Yay for Anoop!!!!!!! He’s the only one out of the wildcard I liked. I wish they would have brought back Felicia. I loved her. She was just put in a hard week. No one was going to be those top three from Tuesday! I really liked her and Kendall. I wish they would have gotten a second chance from the judges. I think Jasmine, Jesse, and Tatiana we wasted space in the wildcard round. Those spots could have been better filled by other girls. So yay to Anoop!!! My vote is going to Adam and Anoop this season!!!!!! Good luck boys!

The structure this season is so strange to me. I feel like tonight, the judges were really conscious of the fact that the top 9 so far were 6 men, 3 women, and so they were abnormally nice to the girls because they were trying to balance things. If they were only going to pick 3, they should have picked Anoop, Ricky and Matt, in my book. The men are SO much stronger this year.

I haven’t watched yet but didn’t mind getting the scoop as I’ll watch tonight just for the vocals. I.DO.NO.GET Megan…her ‘talent’ is that she’s a pretty blonde…I am so peeved that the likes of Felicia didn’t get through but this chick did. She’ll be gone early given the other competitors.

  11. strunkette on March 6th, 2009 9:56 am

Was is just me or did Megan look completely out of place on that stage. Its like she didn’t know what to do with her body…oh and she also sang through her teeth the entire song. My vote would have been Matt, Ricky, and Anoop…..forget the girls…better yet bring back Felicia!

I didn’t watch until right now and guess what? My DVR cut off the winners. I love my DVR but sometimes I seriously want to choke the thing. I knew I could come here and find the results.

The only one I agree with the judges on is Anooooop! He reminds me of the Nard Dog with his acapella group at NC. I totally agree with you on the Megan thing. The judges said they want the variety that she brings but she’s going to sing the songs the same exact way in every round. Bad choices on the girls they picked.

That was the first episode I’ve ever seen of AI (stuck at a friends house and didn’t have a choice). I personally wasn’t impressed by ANY of the singers and was surprised at the small studio that they performed in. I thought it would be more like So You Think You Can Dance with a bigger stage. It seemed like a glorified Karaoke contest. It’s hard to believe that actual singers come from this show after seeing (granted, just one) episode. Luckily the show was recorded so we could fast forward through Ryan and some of the the blah, blah, blah we just talked over (just one “dawg” is too much). Paula is concentrating more on getting camera shots of her jewelry than being an honest judge. She’s over there whispering with Simon like she’s hoping to be his girlfriend and so excited that he’s chosing to share his secrets with her.

The person I was most impressed with surprisingly (to me) was Simon. He seemed the most real of the fakeness that is AI. I don’t mean fake like it’s fixed. Just “Hollywood” fake. I wished that they would just say “No, none of you would get a recording contract, so we’ll just go with the other 8”.

Seriously, that one guy can’t pick a song that’s newer than Bobby Brown? And Paula getting up to dance was just ridiculous. Who dances to that song? Does anyone in America have that stupid song on their ipod? Maybe the horrible Britney version, and even then you should be ashamed!

I’m glad to see that I wasn’t missing anything (I was expecting a WAY higher caliber of singers), but I am upset that I can’t get that hour of my life back!

I guess I’m ashamed then because I most certainly have My Prerogative on my iPod – classic from my high school years.

Clearly you’re not a fan of IDOL but others are. Countless others as it’s the number one show on TV.

As for the talent, well give them a little time to develop. Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry (who came in 5th his year) were the only two talents that were front runners early on. Kelly Clarkson didn’t make an impression until half way through her season. The enormous talent that is Jennifer Hudson didn’t make it far her year either. With this crew there will be a break out star.

Simon is the best of all the judges. Unfortunately this year he seems to be wearing his Executive Producer hat more. Casting is more important to the judges than putting through the most talented singers, and that’s a shame. Ricky Braddy is a much better singer than Danny Gokey, but Ricky Braddy doesn’t have a dead wife and a story to sell. Not that Danny isn’t talented, because he is, but for the judges/producers it’s more about the whole package. Perfect example – Jasmine Murray. In no way does that girl have the vocals to move on. But he AI producers are looking for the next Rhianna. They “cast” her in the Top 12 because of her looks. That’s the shameful part.

I’m a dedicated IDOL fan and that’s not going to change because I do truly enjoy the talent (well most of it) week in and week out. But at the same time I am completely disillusioned by how obvious the judges and producers are being this year in handpicking the talent rather than letting America decide.

  17. Marc on March 7th, 2009 1:50 pm

I, too, am a dedicated Idol fan. I much preferred the Top 24 format because the viewers got to pick the Top 12. And especially this year, that the judges picked all of the Wild Cards, it’s too blatantly their attempt to plant singers in the finals.

I’m sick of everyone reminding us of the fact that Clay Aiken was a wild card. During his season, he was in the same group as Ruben and Kimberley Locke. That year, the viewers voted him as a wild card into the Top 12. Ironically, those three were the last contestants standing in Season 2. Perfect example why I don’t like this format.

Season 1 Wild Card was RJ Helton…. finished 5th.
Season 2 Wild Cards were Kimberly Caldwell (7th), Carmen Rasmussen (6th), Trenyce (5th), and Clay Aiken (2nd, see above).
Season 3 Wild Cards were Leah LaBelle (12th), Jon Peter Lewis (8th), Jennifer Hudson (7th), and George Huff (5th).

Out of this year’s crop, Anoop stands the best chance of going far in the competition. Still, he was the 4th highest votegetter in his episode (3rd if you consider that he could have scored more votes than Alexis). With the likes of Adam, Danny, and Lil in the mix, I don’t see him doing much better than 4th.

I’d like to think that a majority of the viewing and voting public prefer talent over backstory. It’s a shame that someone with the superior vocal ability like Rick Braddy suffered from lack of screen time and not being a “package artist.” It just pisses me off.
