THE BIG BANG THEORY Season Finale : Give Me My Remote

Bazinga! THE BIG BANG THEORY Season Finale Delivers

May 12, 2009 by

One of the consistently funniest TV shows on air right now aired it’s season finale last night, and I felt a twinge of sadness knowing it’s going to be a few months before we get our next new episode of THE BIG BANG THEORY. I’ll miss Sheldon, Penny, Leonard, Raj, and I guess ever Howard.Their antics, brilliant (and I mean that literally) barbs, and unique way of looking at the world is a guaranteed laugh on Monday nights.

Where else are you going to see guys in a Cheesecake Factory freezer dealing with Operation, a Van Dyke and a Casio watch? Exactly.

It’s tough to have a weekly discussion about a 1/2 hour comedy here on GMMR.  Especially a show like THE BIG BANG that doesn’t rely on an ongoing story arc. A recap usually comes off as “Hey, you remember when this happened?  Remember when he said that? Remember?”.  But don’t mistake my reticence for disinterest. I am an avid fan of THE BIG BANG THEORY.  It’s one of the shows I feel like I am always recommending to people.  When people ask what shows they should be watching that they aren’t, I always say, CHUCK, THE BIG BANG THEORY and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.  Yes, I think it’s that good.

Dan and I often talk about out love for BBT on The TV Talk Podcast, and it is consistently the #1 show we receive comments about.  People are always thanking us for turning them on to such a great show — You’re welcome?!

Shame on the Emmy voters if they don’t give THE BIG BANG THEORY a fair shake this awards season.  This show should definitely be in the running.  And if all things were fair and right in this world, Jim Parsons would walk away with Best Actor in a Comedy — yes, I think he should beat out Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell and (gasp) Tony Shaloub. Not to take anything away from these other actors but what Jim Parsons does week in and week out as Sheldon Cooper is nothing short of astonishing. So much is asked of him and he always, always delivers.

Here’s to hoping this great show gets recognized for it’s brilliance!

But awards season is some time away.  Now we’re in season finale mode.  And last night we bid a fond farewell to the guys as they headed to the North Pole to study something that could lead to the discovery of the string theory…or something like that (I’m not going to pretend that I understand the science mumbo jumbo of it all). Sheldon got a grant and invited the guys along to help.  Howard was reluctant to be stuck with Sheldon at the North Pole for the whole of the summer, but he eventually succumbed to the peer pressure and joined his friends.

Leonard struggled with leaving after sensing some mixed feelings from Penny.  Would she miss him? We the audience know the answer is YES, but Leonard left never knowing just how sad Penny was to let him go. Aw.

And now on to the “Hey, you remember when this happened?  Remember when he said that? Remember?” portion of our program.

…a few highlights from last night’s THE BIG BANG THEORY.

  • “Bazinga!” — Learn it. Love it.
  • Sheldon: “Everyone at the university knows I eat breakfast at 8 and move my bowels at 8:20”
Leonard: “Yes. How did we live before Twitter?”
  • Raj: “If we were part of the team that confirmed string theory we could drink for free in any bar in any college town that had a University that has a strong science program.”
  • Howard: “You guys are seriously considering this?”
    Leonard: “Yes.”
Howard: “And you think you could put up with Sheldon?”
Raj: “I’m a Hindu. My religion teaches that if we suffer in this life we are rewarded in the next.  Three months in the North Pole with Sheldon and I”m reborn as a well hung billionaire with wings.”
  • Penny and Sheldon’s door exchange was brilliant!
    “Penny”
    “Sheldon”
    “Penny”
    “Sheldon”
    “Penny”
  • Howard’s Mother: “How is it that in the entire country of India there’s not one Outback Steakhouse?!”

So bummed to not have a new episode.  I think I’m going to have to go out and buy the DVDs and have a little summer rewatch.

Feel like sharing your BIG BANG THEORY love?  Favorite moments from last night’s finale or the season in general? The comments are open.

And if you are new to the show this season or you haven’t watched but are considering catching up this summer, we want to hear from you too!!

Big Bang Theory is probably my favorite TV show on TV (thanks largely to GMMR for turning me on to the show), along with the Office. I, too, am saddened that this season is over. I’ll definitely be pulling out my Season 1 DVD and visiting my favorite theoretical physicist this summer.

The Penny/Sheldon exchange at the door was the best and it made me think of Dan immediatly. Then the Twitter line. You picked out all the best. As another who was turned onto this show by you an Dan, thank you!

This is such a great show and I too will miss it over the summer. What started out as a funny little show to watch at some point during the week quickly became must see for me on Monday nights. It is the first thing I turn on when I get home on Mondays. This will be a long summer.

Oh…you might want to take another look at the title of this post. You gave me momentary heart failure until I remembered this show has already been renewed.

I loved when Sheldon went to Penny’s apartment and she replied by knocking on the other side of the door. It was so unexpected and hilarious. I feel that then, the one saying Bazinga should be Penny. Te annoyed look on Sheldon’s face was precious.

I want to know what “Bazinga” means in final ep of the BBT??

    I will really miss them..

  9. Randy on May 13th, 2009 10:59 am

DEF AGREE on the Jim Parsons Emmy!! Give it to him!!! And this is coming from someone who typically enjoys The Office and HIMYM a bit more. But seriously, what he does every week makes Alec Baldwin look a bit silly by comparison.

  11. Vanala on May 13th, 2009 1:18 pm

oh dame tBBT is my fav!!!
    miss them..
btw what the BAZINGA exactly mean???

  12. Karl on May 13th, 2009 3:20 pm

    Bazinga
I interpret this “I can’t stand” as “I would never ever choose” or “I hate”.

But I certainly would not expect an expert to say “I can’t stand” requires an infinitive.

  13. Amos Ortega on May 14th, 2009 1:19 pm

I think Bazinga means “gotcha” or “u fell in another of my classic pranks “. Love the show!!!

I guess this will answer the bazinga question:

omg, that final episode was great! Bazinga is a new catch phrase for my 10 year old – as is the sheldon knock – it really is one of the best shows!

  16. Michael on May 17th, 2009 6:31 pm

I’m not a big fan of “Bazinga”. This is so outside of Sheldon’s character.

BBT is the best show on television. I started watching it at about the 6th episode of season one and have been an addict since. After watching it on Monday nights, I am online about an hour after to start downloading the episode that some great people have recorded and uploaded. My girlfriend is quite the fan as well now and we enjoy falling asleep to all the episodes on shuffle most nights. Im stoked it has been renewed for atleast the next 2 seasons and can not wait for next season. As a final note, I am also not that into the whole Bazinga slam Sheldon gives in this episode. Like “Micheal” who posted earlier, I do not think it fits with the personality and of Sheldon, who is also my favorite character.

With the finale of both Lost and The Big Bang Theory, hard times start for me now xD. TBBT is an unexpected phenomenon; it has brilliant characters who are apparently almost on the brink of becoming mere caricatures, but when you pay enough attention there´s an incredible humanity surrounding every action. It was a great season finale; Penny and Leonard´s hug was heartwrenching , and i definitely hope something finally happens next season. And Sheldon has to be one of the best characters ever on tv, and Jim Parsons is a magnificent actor. Can´t wait to see him doing different things in the future.

    BAZINGA!

I really enjoy Chuck Lorre’s productions, two and a half men and the big bang theory, they are awesome. This show couldn’t be better, it matches perfectly: 2 all american nerds (sheldon & leonard), 1 jewish-pervert old fashion look (wolowitz) and the funniest indian shy character, Raj. Penny, god, she is gorgeous and in the show, she looks like a pretty nice girl, she has fun (parties, sex) but she also cares about his nerds neighbors. My favorite show is when Sheldon’s sister is in town, and how Raj takes medication, the side effects make me laugh so much!
    Take care .. Bazinga!
