Mia Michaels Resigns from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

October 15, 2009 by

I’m beyond disappointed. Although no official statement from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE has been made, and my inquiries to Fox amounted to a ‘no comment’, it’s been revealed through Facebook and Twitter that Mia Michaels has resigned from SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

Fans started to worry after Mia posted the following on her Twitter page last night:

I AM OFFICIALLY AN ADORING FAN OF SYTYCD….THANK U FOR 5 WONDERFUL YRS

TO CREATE MOMENTS AND MOVEMENT FOR THE WORLD TO SHARE WITH ME WAS A GIFT…..

THANKS SYTYCD AND LOOK FORWARD TO WHATS AHEAD FOR ME…LOOKOUT WORLD!!!!!

On her Facebook page, Mia wrote…

ITS BEEN AN AMAZING 5 YEARS ON SYTYCD……I THANK THEM FOR ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES AND MOVEMENT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CREATE FOR THE WORLD…..TODAY WAS MY OFFICIAL RESIGNATION OF THE U.S SHOW AND LOOK FORWARD TO WHATS AHEAD FOR ME.

The amazingly talented choreographer was one of the biggest stars of the show, and her routines have been by far some of the most memorable dances ever performed on live TV. Michaels even won an Emmy for her work.

Update: Statement from Nigel Lythgoe – Executive Producer and Judge, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE:

“We are thrilled to have given a talent such as Mia Michaels a platform to create Emmy Award-winning choreography. During the auditions this season she has helped choose the best, most diverse top 20 we have ever had. She knows that she is always welcome to return later this season or next. She’s chosen to move on to new challenges and we will continue to support her and wish her all the best.”

SYTYCD will not be the same without Mia Michaels. As a fan of the show and of Mia’s work, I’m shocked and deeply saddened.

Look for an official statement from the show of Fox coming soon.

Mia Michaels is one of of the best parts about SYTYCD. She created some incredibly moving and memorable dances and I always enjoy her honest critiques. I’m really sad she’s leaving. At least Shankman will be a fixture this year.

    This makes me beyond sad.

She was just on the Canadian version last week and this week. She judged last week and choreographed the Top 3 girls dance this week. It was beautiful. Very different from what we see Mia doing. See if you can find it online. I know the guy from Tapeworthy always does a recap with video.

She also shaved her head. Looks fantastic!

    Get well soon.

I hate to say it, but it just won’t be the same amazing show without her routines. I would love to know the backstory on this one. Every week I would look forward to her either as a judge or choreographer. What a disappointment.

I have really enjoyed seeing Mia the last couple of weeks on Canada’s SYTYCD. She has shaved her head and has some new tattoos as well. Never mind all that – her comments were terrific for the final 8 dancers, and her final 3 girls dance was amazing !!! Beautiful art. The show just will not be the same without her. I hope she is moving on to something awesome and worthy of her talent..

It really is terrible news for the show. Her routines are always the highlight. How could they let her leave?!?!

Could it be she has commitments in the fall that she doesn’t have in the summer? I know that’s why we didn’t get Shankman this past summer – he was already committed elsewhere. We can only hope that we get some Travis and maybe some new fabulous choreographers this fall.

Oh no! I saw Mia’s Twitter post, and wondered what that meant. Seemed odd. That is incredibly sad, as I LOVED Mia and her routines were some of my favourites. The show will not be the same without her numbers. I’m glad she was able to do a number on the Canadian show this past week, for the Top 3 Girls, and it was amazing!

Maybe there’s something more? During Vegas, she was strangely calming and peaceful during her part of the audition phase (made pointedly clear when compared to how she’s been at the same time in the past).

My guess is there’s something extremely personal going on with her, and rather then have it brought to the public forefront with the show, or have it connect with SYTYCD while working through it, she decided to leave and keep the matter private.

I think that I’m the only person that really doesn’t care for Mia Michaels. And before you say that I don’t get it or don’t like contemporary, I know contemporary and I like it, I just don’t think that she is as incredible as they make her out to be, and I always find her commentary to be destructive rather than constructive criticism or gushing for the sake of gushing.

I agree with Lauren. I never cared for Mia, although some of her routines were good. She is a troubled woman, and she takes it out on the dancers. It’s not something I want in my living room.
