PROJECT RUNWAY: Michael Kors Fantasy Challenge

October 24, 2009 by

Hey Project Runway fans! Did you like this week’s challenge? I thought it was a fairly interesting challenge, but I wasn’t totally impressed with any of the designs. But what I think is more interesting is that season 6 of PR is shaping up to be the most passive reality TV show in history.

I guess it’s because there just isn’t a villain yet. To be honest, in the past I would have said that I didn’t care for obnoxious people on PR, but I gotta admit that without one, the show is somewhat…well, I don’t want to say boring, so I’ll just say passive again. I mean, if Michael Kors is being portrayed as the scariest person on the show?!

Then again, this episode WAS about him and his Michael Kors Rodeo Drive Inspiration Challenge. The designers were asked to design a look around one of MK’s inspired spots around the world.

By the end of the episode, the judges were making their choices based on whether or not the design produced the ‘fantasy’ of the chosen area of the world. I guess I missed the part where they stressed that it had to be a fantasy type outfit in the challenge, but then again, I guess I get what the judges were saying when they meant that a design had to totally project the location.

At the beginning of the episode, as I was examining those not Auf’d this season, I realized that I am not impressed at all with the male designers this season. Just looking at Nicolas, Christopher and Logan made me think that we could have an all female final three. Has that ever happened before? I’m not sure the show producers would go for that, but then again…the show IS on Lifetime.

But seriously, even before the challenge and the runway, I just could not see any of those three men making it to Bryant Park. Am I just not seeing it? Talk to me, PR fans!

But first, let’s discuss what the designers had $150 and 1 day to complete.

Carol Hannah: Palm Beach

This outfit was cute and def spoke about Palm Beach. I wasn’t totally impressed with it as far as a design goes. I think I could buy a dress like that at Target (no offense, Target!), so it’s just not what I expect from week 10 of PR is all. Not the winner, but not a loser design by any means.

Gordana: New York

This dress I actually didn’t love. Perhaps it was just the way it showed on my TV, but I thought it looked kind of tacky and cheap. The designs on the side of the dress were not flattering, IMO. But I love Gordana, and I was glad to see her safe. I agree with the judges that she needs to stop apologizing for her work before any one even says anything!

Nicolas: Greece

I have to agree with Tim. The construction of his garments was precise; it was just a matter of taste. And in this case, Nicolas had no taste. He’s gotten by in the past with a few things, and he’s not been one of my fave designers. I’ve never been to Greece, but I would not wear that outfit there, or here in the US.

Christopher: Santa Fe

Okay, I can’t tell if the show producers are trying to make us root for Christopher because of his lack of design education or not. He talked about it in this episode, and he sees it somewhat as a source of pride. PR is going to be his ticket into the design world. But on the flip side, the judges are calling him out on his lack of taste almost every week. I think that is the main problem. Christopher sees himself as a fantastic designer who just hasn’t had the privilege of formal training, but I’m sorry…hacking off a pioneer dress/skirt to mid thigh and pairing it with a pale blue smock thing is not fantastic design. Sweet belt, though!

Althea: St Tropez

I like Althea a lot. I have no trouble rooting for her every week. I liked this week’s design, and agreed that it wasn’t the best, but wasn’t the worst either.

Logan: Hollywood

I guess if any of the male designers have even the slightest chance of Bryant Park, it might be Logan. Although if you’d told me that in the beginning of the season, I would have laughed. His design was not terrible, and the construction was good. I was expecting more glamour from Hollywood. Instead, I felt like we got a picture from the “They’re just like us” section of a tabloid. They wear white jeans! Hey! So do I!

Irina: Aspen

I liked Irina’s outfit, and I agreed with Nina that it made me want to wear it and be that girl who could look fab in it and wouldn’t be caught dead on a pair of skis. Haha. The sexified back was cool and creative. What kills me is that it seems the show is trying to peg Irina as the villainess of the season. But I’ve liked Irina this whole season, so I’m not seeing that. The worst thing people are saying about her is that she’s not there to make friends. Well, yeah. I mean, she’s not rude, that I can see. She’s just working hard and winning challenges, so…

You’re Either In or You’re Out…

Irina was once again named the winner this week.  She’s a Bryant Park shoe-in (or should I say stiletto-in), no?

In the end, it’s Nicolas who was Auf’d. And what really really surprised me was how sad Heidi seemed about it. Nicolas has been making me kind of crazy this whole season, so I didn’t expect to see tears and hesitation from the judges about it.

Final note: Guest judge Milla Jovavich really rocked it as the guest. I thought she had valid points for each design and good chemistry with the rest of the judges. And if they had to give MK his own challenge in order to get him to judge this week’s ep, I’m okay with that too.

But what did you think? Talk to us!

I thought it was a little ridiculous that they had to create an outfit inspired from a city some of them had never visited. All they had was a few pictures in a notebook. It was a lame challenge with blah results.

Project Runway or America’s Next Top Male Model. It sickens me to see the favoritism that the judge’s (particularly Heidi) show to the more attractive contestants. Particularly Logan. It’s sooo obvious that he is still in the contest for reasons other than his talent. Who in Hollywood would wear that outfit?!?! Designers only being in the bottom once were cut – Logan is always in the bottom but he’s still there?!? I watch the every thursday because I like to see the creativity in the fashion designs not the look of the designers. There was another goodlooking male last season with far from the top designs also, they brought him back to help, lol.
Heidi- May I suggest that you start America’s Next Top MALE Model if your that hot for goodlooking men. Stop the Favoritism!
