Was LIFE UNEXPECTED What You Expected?

January 19, 2010 by

As a reader of GiveMeMyRemote.com and (hopefully) a listener to The TV Talk Podcast, you’ve inevitably heard my gushing for The CW’s new show LIFE UNEXPECTED. Between blogging, podcasting, Facebooking and Tweeting I did all I could to convince you to tune in. So the question is, did you? And if so, did you love it as much as I did?

Is LIFE UNEXPECTED a show that we should be adding to the GMMR repertoire for weekly discussion?  Tell me what you loved or didn’t about last night’s series premiere.

I had only heard about Life Unexpected from you and wasn’t sure I’d even watch, but I found myself changing the channel and it was all uphill from there! It was great considering I had no expectations. It felt like a great family drama with reminders of Everwood and Gilmore Girls for obvious reasons…totally are why you like it GMMR!!! Can’t wait for more!

    Tuned in. LOVED it 🙂

I liked it, but I didn’t love it. I think it is falsely advertised – it was no Juno meets Gilmore Girls (both of which I loved). Based on the first episode, it won’t be must-see TV for me, but more of an occasional tune in.

I really liked it! I hadn’t heard that much about it but the commercials made it look interesting, so I watched. I laughed out loud at least three times, which I wasn’t expecting it.

I loved it. I definitely cried a lot more than I thought I would. I love the cast and their chemistry is fantastic. I can’t wait until next week.

I liked it! I didn’t have any expectations, though, so nothing to really be disappointed about. I could see some resemblance to GGs in the whole Luke, Christopher, Lorelai deal, and I found myself already choosing a side, and I think I am going to root for Cate to end up with Ryan. I liked Ryan a lot. I liked Baze, too, and I thought it was sweet that he brought his friends to Lux’s bday party. I liked his friends a lot. I think I identified with Cate most, and I look forward to her character development. I think she has issues, but I believe she has done everything she has with the best interest of others in mind. I liked how shocked she was that Lux hadn’t been adopted. It made me think that if in the past 16 years, if she had regrets, that she probably would have at least had the idea that she had done right by the baby. To find out that it didn’t really go down like that and to see Cate make a committment to do the right thing going forward was nice. Same for Nate. I like the actor that plays him, he was in a Bones ep a few years ago (as a complete crazy dude\one of Brennan’s bad boyfriend choices haha) and I liked him on the short lived Miss Guided. So yes, all in all I liked it. Enough to give it a season pass on the dvr under ‘save until I delete’ status. Kath, I hope you plan to discuss it on GMMR because I am interested to hear what other people think.

I didn’t get home until after 8pm last night but I had it on the DVR. Based on what I saw on Twitter as I was watching the daytime talk and Chuck, I moved LUX up on the watch list before Castle!

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The one thing I didn’t like was the mom character sleeping with the baby daddy. Really? Not sure I buy it. We’ll see how it plays out.

Totally agree with Patty! That was one thing I didn’t like at all. It felt unnecessary from a storyline and character perspective.

I liked it and think it has a lot of room to navigate. I agree with seeleybaby that Cate probably thought that she at least handled giving LUX (weird name, BTW) up for adoption was the right thing. Glad that they ended the first show with a birthday party for Lux. I think I will end up rooting for Cate and Nate, as I just think Ryan is an enabler. A cute enabler, granted, but he is the “safe” choice for Cate and I think that Nate could be the one.

LOVED it! So glad you turned me on to this show since I hadn’t heard much else about it. Would love to see it covered on the website.

I just couldn’t figure out a way to work this in last night. But I heard there’s a replay happening on Wednesday so I’ll definitely be able to catch that one.

Loved it loved it!! So good! It is reminiscent of all things holy about The WB. I miss The WB a lot and am so glad to see Shiri Appleby again in another great role.

Really liked it – look foward to seeing how it develops

Mondays are going to give both of my DVRs a workout, but I added this show. I enjoyed the premier and can use another feel good show in my lineup right after Chuck. I even checked it out before watching 24 since you and Matt Roush both gave it good reviews, the two primary sources I depend on to steer me to quality shows. So far, I think the actors are the appeal for me because I really liked the characters as they portrayed them, especially the dad.

I really really liked it! I’d seen the occasional preview but then I saw your post yesterday I decided to give it a try and I’m so glad I did!

Will definitely be watching from now. I really liked all of the characters so like some people have said, I find it almost hard to choose sides bc I want Cate to be with both Ryan and Baze.

The only thing that kind of bothered me was how Lux turned out to be so blonde when her parents are both deep brunettes. Oh well … I guess they both had recessive genes.

Anyway, I love the story, like the acting, like the characters. I’m sold. (Oh and I love the music too!)

Aw, I’m so excited that you all liked it so much. I’m not sure how I’m going to find the time, but I’ll do my best to host a weekly discussion about LUX.

I won’t spoil, but I will say that I liked next week’s episode even more than the pilot. The third episode is great too, but by then you are less surprised because you get to know these characters so well in the first two eps.

What really struck me was how flawed the “adults” are. They are real, honest, and make a lot of mistakes. As for Lux, she’s not just the bratty teen with issues nor is she this uber-responsible and mature kid.

First, gotta say THANKS seeleybaby! I was trying to place Baze, and while I could have easily IMDb’d him, instead I played the memory game of “where the heck do I know you from?”. Thanks for helping my brain along!

I really enjoyed LUX! I had been looking forward to it for a while, and your podcast kept it fresh in my mind! Knowing two of the leads from classic WB shows helped too!
