A VAMPIRE DIARIES Head Scratcher - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

A VAMPIRE DIARIES Head Scratcher

February 14, 2010 by

Happy Valentine’s Day my little blood suckers!

Now as you know, I’ve become quite smitten with the residents of Mystic Falls. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES has become one of the shows I look forward to the most each and every week. I’m proud to say that I’ve never missed an episode.  So when I received the following email from GMMR reader, Nancy, I couldn’t help but wonder if I had in fact missed something very important.  She raised a question that I hadn’t really thought of, but once I did I was left scratching my head.

Here’s what she asked….
(I hope she doesn’t mind for paraphrasing)

In “Children of the Damned” we learned that at the time of her capture, Katherine hadn’t yet turned either Damon or Stefan.  Prior to her being discovered by Giuseppe Salvatore she was teaching Damon future hunting skills, for when she did turn him.  Stefan hadn’t been turned either and couldn’t have been the night she was taken because he was full of vervane.

After she was discovered to be a vampire, Katherine was immediately imprisoned and soon there after thought the be locked for eternity in the tomb.  Regardless of her escape, the Salvatore brothers surely never saw her after they thought she was locked in the church.

So when did Katherine have the opportunity to turn the brothers and give them their rings?

Did Nancy and I miss something on the show?

Now, before you start flooding the comments with spoilers from the books, we are looking for explanations from the TV series only. Although the books are similar, there are significant differences.  And anything that has happened in the books but not yet seen on the TV series is to be considered a spoiler (just in case).

I have been wondering the same thing! I have no explanation though… Hopfully someone has a theory as this has been bugging me.

In Vampire Diaries, the vampire changing mythology works differently from things like Buffy. To be turned, you just have to have vampire blood in your system when you die. The idea on the show, that we’ve learned from the Salvatores is that they were killed trying to save Katherine. So my assumption is that they had vamp blood from Katherine in their systems when killed. If she has been regularly giving them blood, as part of her plan to turn them, which is my assumption, it wouldn’t matter that Stefan had ingested vervain. As for the rings, I have no idea how they get them — perhaps Emily?

In complete agreement with heroine_tv on this one – there was most likely blood sharing going on that we haven’t seen yet, and they’re saving that up because it fits better into a flashback story dedicated to how the boys were turned. I’m sure we’ll have all the missing pieces of how the brothers were turned slotted into place by the end of the season.

As for the rings, my bet is that Katherine quite probably had Emily make them in preparation for the boys being turned (she was open with Pearl about wanting to turn them both), and Emily was the one who gave them to Stefan and Damon.

I agree with the above comments about how they were turned. In Children of the Damned Katherine also mentioned that thanks to *Emily* they were able to walk around in daylight, so I’d say it was Emily who helped the Salvatore brothers get the rings.

I was confused because I thought we saw Katherine turn Stefan in a flashback already. In the episode Lost Girls, there’s a scene where she bites him and I had always thought that’s when he was turned. But the above comments about the mythology of this show totally make sense. Thanks!

I just caught up with the last two episodes and I’m glad to have seen this post… I was wondering the same thing. March 25th seems sooooooo far away. 🙁

Have discussed this with my friends. Katherine must escape, turn both boys, get recaptured and then escape again (unbeknownst to all) before the vamps were entombed.
I’ve been assuming the show will return to tell us about what transpired but maybe not until next season?

Well during “Family Ties,” Damon explains to Elena that the two original Salvatore brothers ran to the burning church filled with people who didn’t support the war or some sort of thing like that and the two brothers were short because they tried to save them. I’m assuming that Damon and Stefan tried to save Katherine, but were killed because wanted to save a vampire and also, maybe Damon and Stefan drank Katherine’s blood and it was still in their system at the time of their death. As for the rings, maybe Katherine gave it to them before hand, or maybe Emily helped them out.

we learn it in the 4th episode. damon says elena that salvatore brothers have been shot trying to save the woman they loved from a burning church…. if they had katherine’s blood in their system …. they became vampires 😉 (sorry for english i’m french 😉 )

You guys are the best. This all makes sense. I knew about the whole ‘vampire blood in your system’ thing, but I think I was going on the notion that some time had passed between Katherine last biting them and her being locked in the church.

But all the explanations make sense. Thanks for sharing!

There is a process to being turned; you are biten, you drink, you die and then you feed. Maggie, you are correct that in the flash back episode “Lost Boys”, Katherine did bite Stefan, and she probably had him drink her blood which is something we did not see, but she did not kill him at that point. Remember, she used the mind compulsion on him to make him forgot, telling him that “he was not to tell anyone, that they would go on exactly as they have been” She was probably feeding on the both of them and exchanging blood with them prior to her getting caught. As for the rings, Emily probably gave the rings to them. Remember, in the episode when Damon reveals why he came back, “History Repeating” he said that Emily agreed to “save” Katherine because “she knew they were going to come for her too and she made him promise to save her children.” That’s when she could have given them the rings. (Now that I think of it, that coversation probably happened before she was caught, but I still think Emily gave them the rings or maybe Anna?) I’m thinking that they died at each others hand or they were killed for being sympathizers. Remember in the last flash back epsiode Papa Salvatore told both Damon and Stefan that anyone who is seen as a sympathizer or shames their family will be killed along with the vampires. One thing is for certain, after Katherine was caught, neither Damon or Stefan saw her again. They all thought she was in the tomb except for Anna who knew that she was not. Katherine could have made one more stop to see Emily, after being caught, and gave her instructions to give them the rings. I’d be interested to see if I am right.
FEEL FREE TO COMMENT ON MY THEORY

Here’s a question: Why did they trap the vampires in the church. After, catching them, why not just stake them since they were already weakend with wood bullets and vervaine. It’s like Sheriff Forbes said, wood bullets may not kill them, but it will weaken them long enough for anyone to stake them.
