What Were They Thinking?: Daytime Emmy Edition

June 28, 2010 by
Filed under CBS, Daytime Emmys, Daytime TV

So, yes, I’m a fan of the soap genre and generally look forward to the Daytime Emmy Awards. These guys are some of the hardest working people in the business, producing five scripted episodes a week, 52 weeks a year. Think about how many hours that is. They definitely deserve a chance to relax and celebrate their corner of the small screen landscape.

But if you tuned into the award show last night (Sunday, June 27), the two-hour event had very little to do with daytime. And that really is a shame.

The awards were held in Las Vegas for the first time ever, which is cool, but I definitely disagree with the producers decision to focus so much of the broadcast’s attention on their new location. I mean, I understand it to an extent. Glitz, glamour, this could have all meshed well with the daytime TV scene.

But somehow, the awards ceremony managed to pay elaborate tributes to the stage shows of THE LION KING, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL and THE BLUE MAN GROUP, while eeking out just two minutes that paid respect to the recently canceled AS THE WORLD TURNS?

I mean, that’s not only unfair. It’s, like, kind of shameful.

Below is a clip of the short homage, which also includes the time it took host Regis Phiblin to introduce ATWT stars Jon and Kelly Hensley, so the actual video retrospective of the show itself was less than a minute!

Take a look…

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QchPUg1KqZg[/youtube]

ATWT has been on-the-air for 54 years. 54 freaking years, you guys. It is currently the longest-running soap opera on television and it will be airing its last episode in September.

This is the best that 54 years deserves?

Really?

There is no excuse for this. And the whole thing is just mind boggling, considering CBS — the network on which ATWT airs — hosted the awards show.

No excuse.

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT is Back, Bitches!

June 28, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, Make It or Break It

My apologies for the headline.

Maybe screaming “bitches!” at you is a bit unnecessary, sure.

But I’m just a little giddy about the return of MAKE IT OR BREAK IT.

Now, last we saw the ladies of The Rock, we were shocked by the surprise twist of Carter actually choosing Lauren — who’s been in love with him for freaking ever — over Kaylie.

Kaylie, who had just found it in her heart to forgive Carter for sleeping with Lauren when they were sort of on a break, now has to deal with the annoyance of actually seeing these two together.

So what’s her strategy?

I met up with Josie Loren, who plays Kaylie, not too long ago and she said, it’s all about the gymnastics. Kayles is going to throw herself into her Olympic dream, balls to the wall. Lauren, is of course still into the Olympic hopeful thing as well, but Cassie Scerbo, who plays her, also told me — with a huge smile on her face — that things are getting way hot between Lauren and Carter.

Of course, we’d expect nothing less from Lauren now that she’s finally landed her man.

Meanwhile, Emily’s saga with the now-on-tour Damon will continue. Chelsea Hobbs, whom I ran into at the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE premiere party late last month, said that we’ll definitely be seeing Damon, though he’s, you know, kind of busy performing for audiences all over the world now.

But the girls also told me that there are new boys up in the mix at THE ROCK this season. One dude in particular. So, yeah, we love this… especially considering the “no dating” rule there. Clearly the kids are sticking to that. Hard core.

Hahahaha…

The 2nd season of the super fun MAKE IT OR BREAK IT premieres Monday, June 28 at 10 p.m. on ABC Family

HUGE’s Nikki Blonsky on her New Character: ‘She’s like nothing I’ve ever played before’

June 28, 2010 by

The world is already familiar with HAIRSPRAY star Nikki Blonsky. But in her new ABC Family series, HUGE — which follows a bunch of kids at a summer weight loss camp — we’ll be seeing a whole other side of the actress. I mean, first of all, she’s doing a striptease, so definitely tune in for that. But there’s more to it.

GIVE ME MY REMOTE got some quality time with Blonsky, who was cool enough to fill us in…

Describe your character, Will, for us…
Nikki Blonsky:
My character is amazing. Her music is her world, she always has her CD player, not an iPod because I think she truly respects music and wants the artists to get paid! She wears all boys clothes. She has blue hair. She’s totally against the grain, you know? She’s like nothing I’ve ever played before. That’s what I love about her. She’s so fresh and so clean for me. And she’s so witty and so quick.

And she’s tough chick, no?
NB:
Yes. She finds it hard to trust people, because of what her parents have done to her, sending her away and telling her she has to come back looking like something else. But she’s totally confident, anyway. She just struts her stuff and has her own way of thinking and her own way of talking. She keeps all of her emotional stuff inside. She keeps a lot of stuff internal and never really breaks on the outside and that’s what’s fun for me, because I’m so used to playing characters that do show emotion.

But as the season progresses, some of her issues must start to surface, yes?
NB:
Oh, yeah. You’ll definitely get a chance to see her come out. Certain things trigger her emotions. Absolutely.

Certain things, huh? Such as…
NB:
Well, she definitely gets a little heartbroken at one point. You know, she doesn’t get what she wants with a guy that she kind of likes, so it’s kind of rough for her.

Ugh, that’s the worst.
NB:
(Laughs) Tell me about it!

THE OFFICE: With Steve Carell Bouncing, Who Will Take the Lead in Season 8?

June 28, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, Steve Carell, The Office

A few months back, THE OFFICE star Steve Carell announced that he wouldn’t be returning to the show once his contract expired.

And, over the weekend, while promoting his new movie, DESPICABLE ME, Carell reiterated that he would indeed be leaving THE OFFICE once this season wraps.

And since NBC is unlikely to cancel any sort of hit on their current roster, the odds of the comedy series continuing post-Carell is pretty high. Sad, but true.

However, this got us thinking… With Michael Scott on his way out, where will the show’s main focus lie? Will Jim (John Krasinski) take the lead? Dwight (Rainn Wilson)? Would they cast someone new to fill Steve’s shoes?

Vote in our poll below and please let us know why you feel the way you do in the comments section…

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS Powers Forward with 12 More Episodes Ordered by ABC Family

June 28, 2010 by
Filed under Pretty Little Liars, TV News

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is a hit, y’all.

I mean, we already knew that, but ABC Family made it official today when Kate Juergens, their Exec. VP of original programming and development, announced the order of 12 additional episodes.

The extra eps will bring PLL’s first season to a full 22 hours.

Now, there’s no doubt that LIARS is a ratings-winner for the network, earning its highest number last Tuesday (June 22) with 2.7 million total viewers.

So, tell us, are you feeling it too?

Are you one of the 2.7 million tuning in each week?

David Anders to Guest on WAREHOUSE 13

Comments Off on David Anders to Guest on WAREHOUSE 13

His character’s fate on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES may be up in the air — though we know for a fact that he’s heading back down to Georgia to shoot more TVD next month — but David Anders’ (ALIAS, HEROES) feet have landed elsewhere in the meantime.

Syfy has announced that Anders will guest star on an episode of the upcoming second season of WAREHOUSE 13.
His character, Jonah Raitt, apparently escaped from the Warehouse in the 1960s with a dangerous object, so Pete and Myka are determined to capture him. Oh, and Jonah is a suspected serial killer too, no big deal.

Anders always seems to play the bad boys, doesn’t he?

Excited to see him pop up on WH13?

We are too.

HUGE: Say Hello to Your New Favorite Show

June 28, 2010 by

ABC Family has done it again, you guys.

I am lovin’ me some HUGE, the network’s new series starring HAIRSPRAY’s Nikki Blonsky, which debuts this evening (Monday, June 28).

I am lovin’ it in the same way I got guilty pleasure obsessed with MAKE IT OR BREAK IT — which is back on tonight too! — last summer.

HUGE takes place at a fitness camp for teens and tackles all the issues of adolescence, with the added complication of being overweight during that difficult time.

Blonsky kind of plays the camp bad ass, whose parents have forced her to be there. She has no intention of dropping pounds or changing who she is. Hayley Hasselhoff — yes, she is the Hoff’s daughter — plays a character who has every intention of changing who she is, eager to fit in with the cool[er] kids… and at camp, she does. And then of course, there is Gina Torres (ALIAS, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES) who is trying to guide and mentor these kids, but having a hard time dealing with her own issues as well.

We’ll have more — so much more — on HUGE later today and throughout the season, but we first wanted to make sure that you’re getting this particular message: You must watch HUGE tonight. Set your DVR. Listen to Hayley Hasselhoff…

THE BACHELORETTE: Who Has a Secret Girlfriend?

June 28, 2010 by
Filed under #1 featured, The Bachelorette

So if the promos for THE BACHELORETTE are to be believed, in this week’s episode, Ali will discover that one of her final dudes actually has a girlfriend back home.

Now, I’ve gone out of my way to avoid THE BACHELORETTE spoilers — lame, I know — But I imagine this special guy’s identity has been leaked somewhere on the web.

For those of us who are still spoiler-free, however, will you speculate with me?

It has to be Justin, right? I know he likes to pretend that the reason people are wary of him is because he’s a wrestler. But let’s be honest, that doesn’t even make our list of the top 10 reasons he’s annoying. Everything about him is smarmy and fake and, let’s face it, he’s creepy too.

I mean, the guy hopped a couple of miles on a bum foot on an Ali stalking mission. And while  that’s not as crazy as getting a tattoo for her, it’s still not right. Don’t show up at girl’s door without warning or invitation. Uncool.

Plus, Justin acts like he can do no wrong and get away with everything and he does it all with that cocky, smirky disposition. Perfect attitude for a dude who would try to hide a secret girlfriend.

Agreed?

Or, perhaps, you think the show is going to a pull a fast one and one of the “nicer” guys will turn out to be the rat?

Let’s discuss.

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, AS THE WORLD TURNS Win Big at the 2010 Daytime Emmys

The recently canceled AS THE WORLD TURNS nabbed three of the six top acting nods — including Lead Actor and Actress — while THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS star Billy Miller won Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role on the series.

ENTOURAGE Returns: Meet Ari’s New Bitch… Er, Assistant, Mr. Jonathan Keltz

June 27, 2010 by

ENTOURAGE returns this Sunday (June 27) for its seventh season and though the guys are all still the best of boys, you’ll see that they’ve each grown up a bit. E is of course engaged to Sloane, getting ready for their wedding and running his management company. Turtle has his own driving business up and off the ground, Johnny is on the verge of landing another television series and Lloyd is no longer Ari’s bitch.

Actually, even Ari has taken a big boy step forward, being the head of the largest agency in the world now. Though he’s still doing everything he can for Vince, he’s getting pulled in so many different directions that he really does need a right-hand man to help him juggle. And with Lloyd moving on up, there must be a new punching bag in town.

Enter Jake Steinberg… otherwise known as actor Jonathan Keltz.

Keltz, whom you may recognize from DEGRASSI: THE NEW GENERATION or his guest spots on COLD CASE and QUEER as FOLK, is the newest member of the ENTOURAGE crew, appearing in nine of this upcoming season’s 10 episodes.

GIVE ME MY REMOTE got some one-on-one time with the kid, who couldn’t be more excited about the gig…

Were you a fan of the show before landing the role of Ari’s new assistant?
JONATHAN KELTZ: Oh, this is my dream show. I moved out here to L.A. and I said, look, I want to get on ENTOURAGE. I’m just a young, punk actor from New York, Vinny’s livin’ the dream with all of his friends, I’d love to do the same. It’s a show that’s always sort of helped to encourage and motivate me and inspire me, so being able to be a part of it has been an absolute dream come true. I couldn’t be happier.

Must be surreal for you, no?
JK: It’s a bit trippy. It was a little bit insane at the premiere party [last week], just thinking about the last six years of the show and watching it [as a viewer] and being out [in L.A.] for three and a half years and, all of a sudden, walking down that [red] carpet and sitting in that theater, it was crazy.

Yeah, how fun was that?
JK: So much fun. It was on the Paramount Lot and everyone showed up and hung out later. It was great gettin’ to watch the episodes up on the big screen. It was cool, I was sittin’ next to Lenny Kravitz in the theater, which was nice.

Did you get to talk to him at all?
JK: I didn’t. We were sort of sharing the same row. It was like his peeps and my peeps and whatnot. But afterwards, he sort of snuck out, I didn’t see where he went, so we didn’t get to chat at all. But I felt, you know, important, being in the same row as him.

Well, you are on ENTOURAGE now. Actually, the audience has seen you before. You appeared briefly last season.
JK: Yes, I guest starred at the very end of last season. I was hired and fired in episode 11, the second to the last one, in about seven seconds. But they decided to bring me back for season 7 as the new replacement for Lloyd, so it’s been amazing.

Now, how is your character re-introduced? Is your previous “dismissal” discussed at all?
JK: It is indeed. You’ll see that it’s [done] pretty much right at the beginning of the first episode. We’re back at the agency and you’ll see that I sort of come in and impress Ari, so he decides to put me on the desk.

What’s your character’s relationship with Ari like?
JK: It’s interesting. You know, it has its ebbs and flows. But there are moments where it’s definitely more of like a mentorship-guidance relationship, where it seems like he’s taking me under his wing and he’ll give me some advice, warning me about different routes in the agency path and whatnot. And then, the hammer will come down sometimes and he’ll rant and rave and scream as well. You know, it’s all to break me down and give me a tougher skin to bounce back with! It’s been absolutely incredible gettin’ to throw down with Jeremy Piven on the set.

Is the dynamic between you two similar to the one Ari had with Lloyd or no?
JK: It’s definitely a different dynamic. He and Lloyd had a *very interesting relationship. I’d say, Lloyd was more of Ari’s “work wife” [whereas] I’m more of the “work son.” I’m sort of the young, eager up-and-comer, so I’m always running around, trying to impress him, trying to eagerly get done whatever he’s thrown at me and make it all happen to perfection. So it’s a different kind of energy. I’m always scramblin’ around, always almost drowning under everything that expected of me. All that a young assistant like me wants to do is be the next Ari Gold, so I’m trying to learn from the best.

What do you think? You gonna watch a little ENTOURAGE tonight?
