Comic Con ’10: GLEE Panel Highlights

July 26, 2010 by

Alright, Gleeks! GMMR reader, Lauren, hit GLEE’s Comic Con panel on Sunday and is giving us the details on what went down…

GLEE Comic Con 2010

  • In attendance: Executive producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, Chris Colfer (Kurt), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina), Kevin McHale (Artie), Heather Morris (Brittany)
  • Moderated by Tim Stack, Entertainment Weekly
  • Began with a season 1 clip reel
  • Falchuck says they feel the show began at Con last year, thanks the audience for their support.
  • Chris Colfer says it’s rewarding working with his TV dad, Mike O’Malley, who is “flawless.” He gets facebook and twitter messages about how his performance inspires, affects others. Says its the first time in TV history that a father has accepted his son for who he is.
  • Re: Mercedes and Quinn, Amber says the relationship is fun. (P.S. We’ll get more of it this year)
  • Re: Artie, dancing in mall, Kevin felt nervous and weird about not being in the chair. He got to do it with Joss Whedon — who directed the ep — 50 dancers, 200 extras and all the people who happened to be shopping that day.
  • Re: Principal Figgins thinking Tina is a vampire, does Jenna Ushkowitz have a favorite vampire? She says she loves THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and is a fan of the whole trio.
  • Heather Morris say her fave line is either “…dolphins are just gay sharks” or “there was a dead mouse in mine.” The line about Jesse St. James being Mr. Schue’s son was something she came up with herself. Impressive!!
  • Ryan Murphy says GLEE will do another Madonna episode at some point… most episodes take 8 or 9 days, while the Madonna ep was 12 or 13 and went over budget early on. The day they shot the “Vogue” video was Ryan’s favorite.
  • Amber loved “Bad Romance.”
  • Sseason 2 may go in a different direction than expected: The show will become more intimate, focusing on the characters. For example, we’re getting a whole “Brittany” episode. There will, however, be a couple of tribute eps, including one for Britney Spears, which they’re doing in a fun, hallucinogenic way. They’re in negotiations for another big tribute hour, but can’t yet reveal who it’ll pay homage to. There will be 5 musical numbers every week.
  • Re: The post Super Bowl slot, Ryan states, “Nothing says Super Bowl to me like GLEE.”
  • Re: Songs they want to do, Chris mentions ROCKY HORROR tune “Time Warp” and the crowd goes wild. There will be a ROCKY HORROR ep.
  • Audience member asks question about Kurt not apologizing to Finn for his “creepy” behavior. Ryan looks at it as Kurt in search of love and making mistakes rather than creepy behavior. He loves the Finn, Kurt, Mike O’Malley triangle.
  • Re: The relationship between Brittany and Santana, they’re writing an episode for them, debating about whether or not they should kiss. Naya and Heather both love the relationship, just hanging out. They are best friends in real life.
  • The cast was very nervous about meeting President Obama, but Oprah was scarier.
  • The difference between Kurt and Chris? Chris is a huge nerd (he is wearing an autobots shirt), while Kurt thinks he is superior to everyone. Chris thinks Kurt is living in an environment where people tell him that he cant be what he is. Regarding the question about Kurt not apologizing to Finn, he says people should give Kurt more credit.
  • Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are both coming back this season. Working with them was awesome, Chris says. Got their blessing on doing Defying Gravity.
  • Kurt will get boyfriend this year. He’ll have the high school experience that Ryan didn’t have. Says they should have a him and his boyfriend be prom king and king.
  • Heather says her favorite thing about season 1 was the cone bra she got to wear.
  • Kevin says he loved playing Ryan Murphy, directing the “Vogue” video.
  • Re: The home life of other characters, Ryan thinks we will see it, wants to see Rachel’s dads.
  • They are working on an episode about religion, we’ll get to see Mercedes going to church, she’ll bring Kurt along.
  • Tina may fall out of love with Artie, may have a relationship with Mike Chang.
  • Re: Feedback from high school students – the show really displays why the arts matter, got a letter the other day about a music program not being cut because of success of GLEE.

And that’s what you missed, folks, if you weren’t in the room for GLEE at CCI this weekend.
