Who Went Home on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE?

July 29, 2010 by

Thursdays are tough enough when we have to say goodbye to one dancer, but saying goodbye to two? Well, that’s just not right. (Especially if one of the dancers is not Jose). It’s going to be a tough night for SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

Before we go any further I must applaud Mia Michaels for an OUTSTANDING group routine this evening. Visually stunning and so incredibly well danced. Quickly one of my favorite group numbers of all time. Brilliant!

Keeping the momentum going, Nigel announced that in addition to the $250k going to the winner of this season of SYTYCD, the victor will also be the very first dancer featured in Gatorade ads since the thirst quencher has just declared dancing to be a sport. That’s very exciting news!

But tonight is about the results, so let’s get to it.

First up are Kent and Jose. I think we all know how this should go. Kent is SAFE while Jose is in the BOTTOM THREE.

Next to take the stage are AdeChicke and Billy. Billy is the one joining Jose in the BOTTOM THREE, while Ade is SAFE.

The final two to learn their fate are Robert and Lauren. In a bit of a shocking twist, Robert is SAFE and for her first time ever, Lauren is in the BOTTOM THREE. Wow!

Those three will dance for their lives, but first we are treated to the skills of the dancers featured in the upcoming “Step Up 3D” (which of course I hope to see opening weekend.) Look for many SYTYCD alums in the cast including tWitch, Joshua, Jailbait Ivan, Tony Bellisimo, Legacy and more!

Dance for Your Life

Jose’s solos continue to get better with each week, but it’s all a bit irrelevant tonight. Billy was beyond phenomenal – really the best solo he’s done and that’s saying a lot. And despite being in the hospital last night, Lauren really danced her ass off as well.

Still, I don’t think it’s going to be a tough vote for the judges. Lauren is the last girl standing and this was her first time in the bottom three. Given Billy and Jose’s proclivity to always be there, those guys should be the two we are saying goodbye to this evening.

And the Judges Decision is…

For the last time this season, the judges will make the decision of who is going home.  Starting next week and through to the finale, America’s vote (or lack thereof) will determine who is cut.

Tonight it’s the last dance for both Jose and Billy. I guess the word we could use is…finally.

Best of luck to both boys in their future dance endeavors!

Thoughts on the eliminations of Jose and Billy?  Korbi is at SYTYCD and will bring you updates from behind the scenes tomorrow, so be sure to come back for that.

I am really sad by this tonight (granted I couldn’t watch – husband won’t let me change channel from horror movie…). Billy is amazing and made me bawl with his dancing last night. I just don’t understand Lauren’s appeal – yes she’s good, but it all seems to be about sex appeal. Maybe it also has something to do with me confusing Lauren and Ashley up until Ashley went home.

Luckily I’m buying tickets for the tour, and I know Billy will find work immediately.

Lauren is a good dancer, but we all know why she was saved. She was the only girl left. They didn’t want to have the last 4 dancers all be guys. NO WAY is she a better dancer than Billy. At least there is a really good chance we will see Billy back on the show later as an all-star. A sad but very predictable outcome.

Maybe, but America hasn’t connected with Billy. He’s been in the bottom 3 for 5 weeks straight…that’s sending a message. It’s America’s favorite dancer…not best.

The judges weren’t going to cut the last girl. Of course Lauren was safe.

Why wasn’t Lauren dancing during the group routine? Cat mentioned some drama last night but didn’t specify. Does anyone know?

The only reason Lauren was in the bottom this week IMO, was the audience was sending the judges a message that the season isn’t a contest. Kent has already won the show. Lauren can’t steal the votes to win like the judges were trying to imply on the Wed. performance show. It was the last bit of intrigue of the year, but the judges ruined it by talking about it.

In all fairness the only dancer this year that had any chance of beating Kent was Alex, but with his injury the show ended as a contest so it just became about hoping to see some good routines.

At the end of the year when you are trying to think of your favourite routines I don’t think many will have any of Kent’s in their top 4 (and maybe not top 5 – still has 2 weeks to get there). Right now my top 4 are the 2 great Alex routines (week 1 with Alison and the week routine with Twitch); the Ade and Comfort routine a couple of weeks ago (I think it was 2 weeks ago); and the routine with Robert and Alison (Travis routine). The top 3 routines (2 Alex routines and Adechike’s hiphop) were really close in terms of my ordering (I can be convinced of any order among those 3) then a big gap to the Robert routine. After those 4 though none of others have been memorable to me. I’m pretty sure I won’t remember any of the other routines beyond this season – I’ll remember the dancers, but nothing in particular about their routines.

To me the solo Billy did tonight was the best of the season (in the top 11 on).

I’m glad Robert was safe tonight just b/c of the top 11 he’s grown on me the most. When the top 11 started a) I had no idea about him b/c he wasn’t given any air time prior to be announced as a member of the top 11 (ditto Ashley); and b) I wasn’t a big fan as I thought he just blended in with the numerous other contemporary dancers on the show and did nothing to stand out.

I’m not that big a fan of his personality, but as a performer he’s really grown on me – being paired with Alison and Katherine has really helped him in that regard from my perspective (they are my 2 favourite all-stars in contemporary). They bring a maturity to their performance that only Ade can come close to, but even he’s a level below them IMO. It’s also a reason I’m not as big a fan of Kent’s as most other viewers of the show (evidenced by voting) as when he’s been paired with them he looks completely off.

As soon as bottom 3 announced, we knew the result. There was no way they were sending Lauren home.

Devastated for Billy, but his talent and style have endeared him to many choreographers and he will find a lot of work. Jose? Eh, he should have gone home a long time ago – and is lucky that the injuries prevented that.

    I’ll miss Billy a lot.

I think it was the right choice, I love Billy but I wanted Lauren to stay more. Thank god Jose finally left! Can’t wait for next week now that it’s four really good dancers and Jose isn’t making me hate the show.

I said in the previous thread that, despite my love for him, if Billy wound up in the bottom three, especially after the night he had on Wednesday, they had to send him home. And they did. Too bad for me, because I loved watching him and, once Alex left, he was really the only thing keeping me tuned in. I think I’m done with this season.

Clearly, Kent is going to win, and since I am apparently the only person in America who can’t stand him, I think I will tune out.

At this point, of the competitors left, I would be happy if either Adechike or Lauren won, but I think we all know that isn’t going to happen.
