BONES, COMMUNITY, MY GENERATION, THE BIG BANG THEORY, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: Thursday at 8 Madness

August 26, 2010 by

They say you can never have too much of a good thing.

“They” clearly never met the Thursday at 8 fall 2010 network lineup.

Good grief.

TV viewers will have BONES, COMMUNITY, MY GENERATION, THE BIG BANG THEORY and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES going up against each other in the 8 p.m. hour. At 8:30, 30 ROCK and freshman show $#*! MY DAD SAYS take over the NBC and CBS timeslots respectively.

Oy.

Pretty much what my nightmares are made of. For a TV geek, anyway.

You think I’m kidding, but when I think about that logjam, my heart races, my palms sweat and I start to freak out about way too much good television. I honestly have no idea how I’m going to handle that night.

At all.

I mean, take a look at the five shows at 8…

BONES:

COMMUNITY:

MY GENERATION:

THE BIG BANG THEORY:

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES:

You see why I’m conflicted?

I love all these shows. I love them all for varying reasons. But I love them. And the thought of missing any of them makes me kinda queasy.

I acknowledge, yes, I’m a little crazy about my TV. And I’ll probably find a way to watch all of these shows the night they air. This means I’ll finally invest in a second DVR.

However, order is key.

Should I have the comedies bookend the viewing? Alternate between dramas and comedies? View in order of most likely to get spoiled? In reverse order of my likely enjoyment so I save the best for last?

(Again, I am aware I have issues.)

Every time I think I have a plan for how to best navigate the timeslot, I change my mind. Or I see a really cool promo and think “A ha, that’s the show I’ll watch first at 8!”

That resolve generally lasts about 9.7 seconds.

And even if I get that second DVR, I’ll have to watch one show live. In theory, it should work out.

But there will be nights when I’ll have to be out and won’t be able to watch anything live. That’s a whole other level of panic that I shouldn’t even get into.

Perhaps On Demand viewing will me help out, but there are often delays on when things are posted. Technically, I believe I’ll be able to watch all of these shows online, however…call me crazy, but I like to actually watch my television shows on a TV.

Not to mention, like many of you, I’m on Twitter. Part of the fun of Twitter is being able to share your thoughts on current things with your friends and followers. Who the heck would care if I’m tweeting about a show a day or two after it airs? At that point it’s almost, well, pointless and then you miss out on sharing the viewing experience with others.

So yes, I’m totally confused about what to do. And quite frankly, I’m guessing many of you guys are, too.

So what I want to know is, what will you be watching live? DVRing? And what will you be passing on?

And hey, if you want to tell me which order I should be watching the Thursday shows, I wouldn’t object to that, either…

Bones first, then Community, then Big Bang, then Vampire Diaries, then My Generation.

To quote Seeley Booth, “I’m with Bones, all the way. Don’t doubt that for a minute.”

  2. katelinnea on August 26th, 2010 3:12 pm

Okay, my situation: I don’t watch BBT, so I’m down to four. I can DVR two things but cannot watch a third thing live. I don’t have On Demand. My current plan is to DVR Vampire Diaries and Bones, and watch the other two later online. I will watch Vampire Diaries live when possible because 1) a lot of my Twitter friends will be tweeting about it and 2) it’s the one that I think I’d be maddest about being spoiled on. I’ll watch Bones immediately thereafter (therefore pushing any of the 9pm shows to later, but…), because I’m recapping that one. ABC seems to put things online pretty reliably, so I’ll try My Generation that way, and I’m half-hoping that I don’t like it just because it would make things simpler.

And yes, I have spreadsheets to figure out my TV schedule, so I totally feel your pain.

  3. Ashley on August 26th, 2010 3:14 pm

Definitely Bones first. That one you’ve gotta watch live, no doubt about it.

  4. DEANNA SMITH on August 26th, 2010 3:18 pm

I WILL ALWAYS WATCH BONES BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE THANK GOD FOR TIVO BONES IS MY FAVORITE

  5. Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect on August 26th, 2010 3:19 pm

I feel your pain! To make it even worse, I have choir practice on Thursday nights so I’m not home to watch anything live – and I only have a VCR. No, I did not type the wrong letters there. I actually have a VCR.

Bones will be my top priority, with new shows being taped and everything else online. Probably. I don’t know!!!

  6. Jen on August 26th, 2010 3:23 pm

Bones, of course! All the way!

But then, I don’t like supernatural stuff and I find comedies like BBT boring, so I guess you can say my choices are more limited than yours.

    Still…Bones, baby!

  7. Danielle on August 26th, 2010 3:29 pm

Always Bones first! Never doubt that!!!!!
    Then,
    The Big Bang Theory

Then the other two, I don’t watch those.
But Bones should be your number one Priority.
    Or..
    go Alphabetically..so Bones is still first… 🙂

  8. seels (Sarah) on August 26th, 2010 3:56 pm

Yeah, Bones fans! Way to represent! Of course, sometimes, we get to cheat and watch Bones eps on Wednesdays (Oh, Canada, we love you!), but then it’s our duty to ALSO watch live and ensure good ratings. So that’s a dilemma. 🙂

@Sarah (from the first post): Nice Boothy quote! Woot!

Community is the other show I’ll plan to watch on Thursdays, and the only reason I MIGHT watch it before BONES is if I happen to be eating dinner right at 8 PM. I mean, we all know that eating any sort of food before the first victim is revealed on BONES is crazy, right? Ewwwwww! Just when i think they have given us the most disgusting corpse of all time, they go ahead and top themselves (sliding human flesh in Gamer in the Grease, anyone?). I’m pretty darn sure that they enjoy torturing our eyes. Good thing we have the lovely Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz (among other things) to soothe the eye-pain 🙂

    Thanks for the post, Marisa

I am just a Bones fanatic. Followed by my guilty pleasure Grey’s and then Private Practice just because I can.

MIght I recommend a rotation. Either in an order or by dice. Or you can choose by which fans have the best tweets.

  10. Jackie on August 26th, 2010 4:56 pm

Well, no competition for me at 8 pm. It’s all about The Big Bang Theory. I just went to a taping of this show this past Tuesday and that solidified my love for the show and its cast and crew.

And at 8:30 I will be watching 30 Rock. Just didn’t get into the other shows…

  11. Kath (canakatydid) on August 26th, 2010 5:24 pm

I adore that you have this problem…I mean, I feel your pain, but I think that it’s amazing that you have such a wonderful problem!!! (And I have the confidence that as an ultra-tv geek, you will find the solution and the perfect balance!!) 😉

  12. Sarah on August 26th, 2010 5:39 pm

Bones first for me, too. 🙂

  13. Alison on August 26th, 2010 8:58 pm

For me it will be Vampire Diairies first because I always get spoiled. And then I’ll have to watch Grey’s because the next day I always talk about it with my friends. And then I have to go to sleep and wake up early for school, so that’s as much as I can watch in one night which sucks. I don’t watch anything live, ever. I start my first show at 8:30, which finishes at 9:15 and at the point I watch my next show, which ends at 10:00 and I go to sleep. Then I usually come home and watch my comedies. And since it’s Friday, I don’t have any homework, or anything to do until later. So, then I’ll watch BBT probably on my downstairs DVR, and My Generation probably online. SO excited for fall TV!!!

P.S. Being in school sucks, especially waking up at 6:00. And having to do… ugh, homework when I get home.

  14. Marisa on August 26th, 2010 11:27 pm

@Sarah: Oh, you pulled an excellent BONES quote on me.

@katelinnea: MY GENERATION is fantastic. My favorite pilot that I’ve seen thus far. KILLS me that it’s in this timeslot.

@Mary: If I don’t get another DVR, I will so be using my VCR to record whatever my first DVR doesn’t record.

@seels (Sarah): Weirdly enough, BONES doesn’t gross me out when I eat. Very few of the bodies make me squirm, but I understand why people are grossed out.

    @Lexi: I might have to do a rotation…

@Jackie: Oh, that is EXCELLENT! Aren’t they fantastic? So glad to know you love the show, too!

@Kath (canakatydid): It is a horrible job, but someone’s gotta do it 😉

@Alison: Yeah, I can imagine how VAMPIRE DIARIES is very likely to get spoiled for many of us. Hmm..

  15. Cee Cee on August 27th, 2010 12:56 am

@Mary I have choir practice on Thursday nights too!!… but I don’t have a VCR. Love your first choice — Bones looks like it’s going to be so much fun this season!

I’ll probably be doing what @katelinnea is doing — Bones and TVD are the priorities and My Generation will be caught on-line.

@seels No Bones Wednesday this season :(. Canada is getting it on Thursdays this year just like us. Bummer.

@Marisa I unfortunately never got into Community or The Big Bang theory. Purely a time constraint because I’ve heard they’re both exceptional. I’ve got BBT somewhere in my netflix queue for future catch-up but no idea when that will be so for now I’m only plagued with 3 conflicting TV Shows… Then there’s 9pm.

  16. Linda on August 27th, 2010 3:09 am

    Bones all the way….

  17. Beth on August 27th, 2010 10:39 am

I’m going to have to DVR Community and Big Bang Theory because there are 3 of us that share the DVR and those are the 2 shows we all watch. I will have to catch Bones on hulu the next day, which is alright, it prolongs the excitement!

I do want to watch My Generation but I just don’t see how that’s possible…hulu maybe?? (i know that doesn’t help the new show’s ratings though. dang.)

  18. Jackie on August 27th, 2010 10:51 am

@Marisa yeah they were all amazing, especially Johnny and Kunal who stayed after to sign autographs. I had an amazing time. I can’t wait to go to another taping 🙂

BONES – cant go without a live David feast – TVD will be a merry second though!!

  20. Heather on September 3rd, 2010 8:06 pm

Vampire Diaries… I have to face, I’ve got a massive case of VD.

I guess one reason is that VD is such as easy show to spoil and its written to shock the audience so when I miss it, I have to stay off twitter or not talk to other folks who have seen it. I don’t feel that way about the other ones.

  21. Shannon on September 14th, 2010 2:26 pm

I cannot figure it out. I love them all. I just started watching BBT last season and I got the past seasons and watched them over the summer. I’m hooked ont that.
Then I only started watching Community in reruns b/c I’m a huge Survivor fan so couldn’t watch Comm and I love it. so screwed on that.
Long, long, long time Bones FAN must not be w/o my cast of forensic scientist to say the least. Must DVR Bones.
Love, love, love VD have to have it. I’m figuring I’ll have to watch that online on cwtv b/c there’s no time for it.
Plus, there’s the CBS factor, they don’t always put all their shows online for viewing. Especially their popular ones. Why would they move BBT to Thurs?!?! WHy?!?!? LOl!
I’m in an awful mess. TG Survivor is on Wed now. I don’t even know if I could get a 2nd dvr, i’m with directv. ugh! Any thoughts? Help, in a quandry in St louis!
