CHUCK Versus G.R.E.T.A. – Help The Producers of CHUCK!

During last week’s season premiere of CHUCK, viewers were introduced to Greta – an undercover CIA operative posing as a Buy More employee. Greta was portrayed by the sexy, Olivia Munn. But as Shakespeare once asked, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Indeed. I think that Shakespeare guy was on to something.
This week, the sweet rose of Greta is being played by Isaiah Mustafa (or as he’s best known, ‘the Old Spice guy’). But wait, isn’t “Greta” a girl’s name? True, but not when Greta isn’t really a name at all.
During our recent sit down with CHUCK Executive Producer Chris Fedak, it was revealed that “Greta” is not the name of the CIA agent, but rather an acronym. So just what does G.R.E.T.A. stand for? Well according to Fedak and Josh Schwartz, the answer might just come from CHUCK fans.
“We’re letting the fans pitch as to what the G.R.E.T.A. acronym stands for,” says Fedak. “Josh and I are terrible with acronyms.”
So here’s your chance, CHUCK fans! Weigh in on what YOU think G.R.E.T.A. stands for. We’ll post some of the best acronyms over the next few weeks and we’ll let your fellow CHUCK fans decide which G.R.E.T.A. suggestion is the best.

It seems to be a call-sign that something or someone temporarily gets assigned with, in relation to a job (just as any fixed-wing plane can be called Air Force One, under very specific conditions). So, if we’re talking about a job title…from the job responsibilities we’ve seen them perform so far, my guess would be GLOBAL RESPONSE TACTICAL ADVISOR (because this person advises and assists Beckman and The Asset regarding emerging clandestine-related situations). It’s the new state-run Buy More’s version of a Management Trainee.

A role to verify if CIA agents who have been inactive, or behind a desk, have what it takes to serve Beckman.
It was set up after Casey and Walker’s dealings with Chuck. Agents needed to be able to act normal in large crowds and respond to Random and unexpected circumstances that can and will occur during an operation. Agents need to be able to fit in and respond at any time.
Unofficially,Beckman saw this as an opportunity to train agents along side the intersect as a means to “Scan” agents for potential Moles or double spies. Beckman believed that Shaw had gotten too close to their most valuable asset and sees this opportunity to covertly avoid another situation if at all possible. ( this is only one step in the process as Chuck, contrary to former belief, does not know everything and did not see Shaw coming in the first place)
The assessment usually takes 1 week and is considered a field test for all purposes involving pay and or disclosure policies. If a “bad” apple is “scanned” the assessment / test will end that night, discretely with a cover story in place for ALL participating agents /civilians. The “bad Apple” is then sent back to the main office ( or a local holding facility ) for further questioning.

When you get in this late in the game, probably not going to come up with an original but GRETA = General Reconnaissance Embedded Tactical Agent seems to best describe the job for me.
GRETA stands for: Government Reinforced Espionage Tactical Agent. LOL.
Here’s my suggestion for the acronym G.R.E.T.A. – Global Reconnaissance, Exploratory, and Tactical Agent… Plus, I’ve included handy definitions, too… See below \/
G – Global (of, relating to, or involving the entire world; worldwide; universal)
R – Reconnaissance (a preliminary survey to gain information)
E – Exploratory (of, relating to, or being investigated, studied, or analyzed)
T – Tactical (using or being weapons or forces employed at the battlefront)
A – Agent (one engaged in undercover activities {as espionage})
However, “Agent” can also be defined as… (a computer application designed to automate certain tasks {as gathering information online}) Which was really interesting, since Chuck (himself) is somewhat of a “computer program”? I just thought this was an interesting definition and plausible double entendre???

Dad built machines not because he was crazy but because he was scared. He knew of the predictions of a global catastrophe and became a genius inventor to figure out exactly what he was dealing with and how to prevent it, or at least make sure his family would be safe. He did many experiments from a young age to literally develop the physics needed to predict the outcome of these possible large-scale events… which required technology that didn’t exist so he made it. The man was driven by a fervent paranoia. A fear that consumed him.
When his research and development still couldn’t produce the answers he started hacking, stealing, and infiltrating every government agency on the planet looking for answers; convinced that they knew something he did not. His skill allowed him to walk into any agency in the world, no matter how guarded, and personally observe anything he felt contributed to his research. He accumulated so many files of secrets from every agency in the world that his pentagon-like base is fabled to all. So vast and powerful that most believe it a myth. Some agencies believe that if there were Aliens, Dad has already stolen them from Area 51 to steal their knowledge. To his horror they did not have the answers, and worse, some people KNEW of the truth of his research- and he had put his family in danger.
So he hid and developed a business called GeoTech.
GeoTech is a multilayer compartmentalized business. To the outside world it appears like a medical and technological development center. They produce all kinds of medicines and machines under the orders of a Director that no one has met.
It is a program Dad wrote. It is the intersect in reverse.
Dad’s original goal with the intersect was to build a machine that acted as a human mind- one he could interface with directly and possibly download himself into. He never quite got that far, but his research on the matter did lead to the discovery of the beginnings of mind-machine interfacing. Aka- intersects.
So he built a complex program to at least act for him and handle all the tasks he was too busy to do. Which was automating everything- down to even the protection of his kids.
Dad’s mind, and all his knowledge (from all his files) in one machine. This architect program still monitors all scientific developments and secret government research in hopes of putting the full equation together to protect the world- or produce the necessary artifacts to reconstruct it. It is constantly projecting possible global threats and using GeoTech to develop medicines and tools to combat it.
As such, it is a multibillion dollar industry, and no one is collecting the bill.
Taskforce agents are some of the most pampered and well trained employees of GeoTech. They are often given strange missions under Dad 2.0’s direction, to do the things he cannot do. One of the taskforce agents is almost always near his children- usually under some false pretext. Their missions are often seemingly pointless, but they act as eyes and ears (microphones and cameras) to get into places Dad 2.0 can’t hack manually.
They would not be informed about their proximity to the Bartowski’s unless the need for extra hands for his kids arose. Or, sometimes just leaving random presents. Their training, however, instructs them pretty specifically what to do under specific circumstances. Because of the wide variety of things these agents do, the turnover rate can be high (and usually ends with some really good cover-up story before they’re let go)
How’s that for a good reason to get randoms on the show?

Genetically Recoded and Enhanced Task Agents (GRETAs) are the product of a now largely defunct government program which genetically modified agents in an effort to optimize them for specific intelligence roles. While the project was initially deemed a great success, the less than stellar performance record of GRETAs coupled with the exposure of abuses within the program has led to loss of funding and a severe reduction in scope.
Despite several early successes on high profile assignments, the records of GRETA’s within the agencies lags behind those of ordinary agents. It is believed that the GRETA’s specialization leaves them vulnerable in other areas. This coupled with an observed lack of mental plasticity among GRETAs and what many have deemed a focus on improper attributes makes them poor field agents. As a result, most GRETA’s have been reassigned to staffing and low level management positions and the program has been restricted to only the study and management of the existing GRETA’s.
Shortly after the programs inception it was found that high ranking officials and officers in the program had committed a series of ethical breaches. Several of those in leadership positions had sought to cover up evidence of the program’s failures. Even more disturbing, evidence emerged that a cadre of military and CIA officials had conspired to create what amounted to harems by engineering GRETAs with traits to suit their personal desires. Unfortunately, a leak within the investigation tipped off the conspirators. It is estimated that dozens of GRETAs were shipped to Dubai.
GRETAs are often found in government roles inside and outside of the intelligence community which places them in contact with the general public. The GRETA’s physical perfection, professionalism and competence makes them ideally suited to serve as the face of the government . This quality is a double edged sword. GRETAs have resulted in the exposure of numerous covert operations through their unwise placement as undercover as service workers in front businesses. These agents should only be employed in covers where professionalism and perfection is expected.
This is my suggestion;

Simple, efficient, even sounds like a typical no nonsense acronym.
I personally liked SharlzG’s and Painter 117s because I feel if it is a government acronym it would typically be no nonsense if possible for something like this, or at least I’d WANT it to be if I were the government person in charge of coming up with “cute” acronyms.
I’m not sure if this is the way to submit an idea for the acronym but if so here’s mine.

Since it is a CIA/NSA project the first 2 letters would be a code for depatment running project. So I would think GR would be the change from the ZR that became defunt after the learned Castro assassination attempt project ZR/Rifle. So Great would be GR/ E.T.A. would the last three letters would still be an anagram. GR/ Electronically Trained Agents.
