V: Scott Wolf, Joel Gretsch and Charles Mesure Tease Season 2

January 4, 2011 by

It’s been a long break between seasons, but the torturous wait is finally over: V is back!

Red sky, alien babies, alliances, and some serious mommy issues — the solid season premiere has it all.

I don’t want to spoil too much for you guys, so how about I let V leading men Scott Wolf (Chad), Joel Gretsch (Father Jack) and Charles Mesure (Hobbes) spill instead?

I tracked down the guys on the Vancouver set to get their teases about what’s going down in season two…

What is the red sky?: Yes, the sky is still red in the season premiere and the weather gets even more freaky. But what does it mean?

“You get a lot of answers about it right away at the beginning,” Gretsch promised. “It’s kind of not resolved, but yeah, you get a lot of answers.”

Easily understandable answers? “It makes sense,” he said. “It actually really makes sense, what it is and what’s going on, why it’s here. It’s fascinating.”

And those answers might bring up some bigger questions for Erica, personally…

Should Chad Decker be trusted?: “There’s a little dance we’ve been doing with [Chad], right?” Gretsch teased. “Do we trust him, do we not trust him? Do I trust him? Do I bring him into the Fifth Column? All that stuff. So we continue a little bit of that this season, which is interesting, because it’s gone to a different level of distrust. And he’s looking for a certain level of guidance, spiritually, and yet there’s a whole level of other [with] the Fifth Column.”

So Chad’s looking for spiritual guidance? Does this mean he’s ready to fight against the Vs?

“One of the fun things about the character is that he lives in this gray area,” Wolf explained. “You’ve got a lot of other characters who are pretty explicitly pro-V or anti-V and I think the fun of him, in terms of playing him and it seems like in terms of the way they wrote for him, was that it was hard to tell who this guy really was and who he would be at the end. Not until the very end of the first season did we really see him come face to face with the truth for the first time. Pretty immediately, we see a Chad Decker who has seen the light. What I think was fun about the end of last season was there was a sense of, okay now he knows. But there’s still a question of we still don’t know — he’s not proven himself to be a person who once he knows will fight for the right side. What I can say is the very first episode, in the season premiere, we see Chad, for the first time truly declare his allegiance to one side.”

And will Chad’s decision stick? Or could he change his mind a few episodes from now?

“Because of the way the guy is built, I don’t think there’s a forever in his life, but it’s going to stick for a while,” Wolf said. “I think everyone’s allegiances were tested towards the end of last year and I think his will continue to be tested just because he’s a vulnerable human being. I think despite what he now knows, he still wants certain things out of his lifetime and I think he wants to keep continue to rise in his lifetime. So even if he finds different avenues to get there, I think that’s still what he’s still after. He’ll always be someone who’s always vulnerable to a better plan to get what he wants. But we’ll see a different Chad Decker this year, someone who is much more pro-active. I think last year, he was very much in a space of seeing which team was better and now, once he picks a team, it’ll be interesting to see him a little more of the master of his own domain.”

Which means no matter which side Chad picks, his newfound independence will shake up his relationship with Anna.

“In the beginning of the second season, he’s still in the middle, but he has work to do to convince both sides he’s worthwhile,” Wolf explained. “And in the end of the last season and his last exchange with Anna, she seems to see that he’s changed and that something’s different with him. And she threats him effectively and says ‘I made life pretty nice for you and I can make life pretty not nice for you.’ What I can say is that it takes a minute before we see Chad and Anna in the same room again. And a lot changes between the last time they saw each other and this time, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the dynamic is moving forward. But he’s in a position to be a bit of a double agent, one way or another.”

Hmmm…

Hobbes will get his own story: Now that Mesure is a series regular in season two (woohoo!), his character will be fleshed out a bit and get his own storyline.

“Usually when you play supporting characters, you bring in new information or get in the way of things or whatever,” Mesure said. “But this time around, I get my own storyline which is fantastic. At the end of season one, we saw Hobbes doing a clandestine deal with Marcus and he was saying, ‘Come and work for the Vs or else’ and Hobbes goes, bugger that, I’m going to head for the hills, you’ll never find me. And he goes, well maybe we can’t get to you, but we can get to this person and he pulls out a photo that has some impact on Hobbes. Well, that’s the story we’re going to pursue for the moment. In the first episode, we are beginning to tell that story.”

While Mesure was mum on the identity of the mystery person and whether we’d see them this season, he would tease Hobbes’ conflict with the Vs.

“Now he knows they’re a very critical threat,” he said. “So just from the purely survival stand point, Hobbes is kind of thinking where’s the percentage in siding with the team who could potentially wipe out humanity? So now he knows they’re a very critical threat and he probably has to throw his hat in the ring to see them off. The other thing is he’s been spending time with these resistance people. So on some level he likes them. On some level is loyal to them. So he’s in a state of conflict and those two things and the leverage that Marcus has over him and his own nature, which is to look after himself.”

Never seen an episode of V, but you want to give it a try? No worries!

The second season premiere is accessible to all viewers, new or old, so why not give it a shot?

So glad V’s back… with all the crappy cancellations, I wasn’t counting on it. Looks like it’s gotten even more interesting, which is a good sign.
Elizabeth Mitchell is really talented. Rest of the cast…. need to step it up a bit.
