SMALLVILLE Producer Brian Peterson: ‘The door is open’ for Michael Rosenbaum to return

January 15, 2011 by

As SMALLVILLE winds down its final season, a big question looming over the show is what role — if any — Lex Luthor will play.

Lex made clones of himself before he allegedly died in an explosion, and the older and younger versions of the character have played a vital role in the tenth year. But will original series star Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) show up in the final hours of the series?

Apparently Rosenbaum heard some speculation about it, because he took to Twitter to debunk the rumors.

“Honestly don’t know where people get their information from, but i haven’t discussed Smallville with Producers or anyone in quite some time,” he tweeted Friday afternoon.

I caught up with SMALLVILLE executive producer Brian Peterson a few hours after Rosenbaum’s message and asked for his thoughts on the tweet. Peterson reiterated what fellow executive producer Kelly Souders said earlier in the season: the show would love to bring back Rosenbaum’s version of Lex.

“We approached him at the very beginning of the season and the door is open [to him],” Peterson told me. “We love Michael and the door is open. Lex Luthor is a big part of the show and we will pay that character off in a significant way for sure.”

But is it too late to write the original Lex in to the final hours of the series?

“There will be a drop-dead point and when that time comes, I’m guessing we’ll have to subsequently handle that one way or the other,” Peterson said. “We never try to hide anything, but we don’t want to promise anything and not deliver.”

What do you think SMALLVILLE fans? Will you be okay if Michael Rosenbaum doesn’t reprise his role?

He may as well go back. It isn’t like he has done any projects that anyone has heard of since he left Smallville. i don’t know what he was thinking leaving, but his career definitely has blown up since he left the show. Smallville was not holding him back.

It would be nice to see him back, considering what a big role he played early in the series, and Lex Luthor’s role in the Superman mythology.

they keep saying “the door is open”

that is so ridiculous. they haven’t talked to him since august and they expect him to just walk on set when they start filming the finale.
