CASTLE’s ‘Setup’: You Ask, I Answer

February 21, 2011 by

It appears the Castle-Beckett fans are really excited about Monday’s brand new episode of CASTLE. When I asked for your queries about the hour, nearly every single question I got was about how the episode impacted the Castle-Beckett relationship. I guess it’s a good thing there’s plenty to tease about the duo for this episode!

For those of you who are more interested in the case aspect — an apparent robbery-murder of a cab driver leads to a deadly discovery which could destroy the city — don’t worry, I have some stuff for you, too. When I chatted with CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe, he teased the case and some family drama for Castle…

Will this be the end of Josh, aka motorcycle boy? 🙂 – @Boock76 via Twitter
As CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe teased, in this episode Beckett “comes to a crossroads with her boyfriend, Josh, and is trying to figure out what to do with it. And part of the issue is Josh is a really great boyfriend on paper: he rides a motorcycle, he’s a cardiac surgeon, he goes off to Doctors Without Borders to save people in Africa. But the problem with that is that he’s not around. She has to wrestle with somebody who is perfect on paper, but not around for her. And she wants someone who is going to be around for her. And then she turns and Castle is always there. Those are things we wrestle with in the two-parter for Beckett — how she deals with her relationship. She’s really at a bit of a crossroads.”

It’s a good thing Castle and Beckett are getting along because the duo repeatedly finds themselves in deadly situations and trapped together in the hour. And when you’re trapped, unsure of how serious a situation is and you have nothing but time on your hands, that would be a pretty good time to discuss the issues in your relationship with a good friend, right? For what it’s worth, Nathan Fillion (Castle) has some excellent reactionary facial expressions in a key scene that are simultaneously hilarious and will break your heart.

Are there any #Castle- Beckett moments?! How many ?:) – @heyitslivx0 via Twitter
See the man in the picture below? I’d say the odds are rather high you will not like his character after you view the episode. (Apologies to the actor, who I’m sure is a lovely man.) But yes, there are many Castle-Beckett moments in the hour.

So what does CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe have to say about the two-parter? I talked with him when they were filming these episodes and here’s what he teased:

What can you tease about the two-parter?
Andrew Marlowe:
Our two-parter coming up at the end of February has some real stakes and some real gravity to it. We’re touching on a very serious subject there. [Guest star] Adrian Pasdar (Fallon), he’s just doing a terrific job. I am so impressed with him as an actor and the level of commitment and research that he does; he’s just owned this character. He plays an agent from the department of homeland security [and] we start out with a murder of a cabbie in New York and it leads us to a world of much great stakes — it’s high stakes for New York City. And we’re very excited about this kind of storytelling, it feels like we’re making a mini-film and everybody’s very excited. Rob Bowman who is my executive producer/director — he directed the pilot — he directed the first part [“Setup”] and everything I’ve seen is really stunning and the second part — which I wrote — is in production now and I’m just really pleased with the work that everybody has been doing. Everybody has just raised their game.

And again, it’s high stakes for the city, but we have a lot of great Beckett-Castle moments. We like to filter all of our storytelling through how it [impacts] the relationship and there are some very touching wonderful scenes with Castle and his family in the loft as things progress and things seem to be becoming a little more dire for the city, Castle has to wrestle with questions about his family’s safety and what he can tell them and what he can’t.

Oh, so we’ll be seeing some family bonding for Castle? Will it be like the Castle-Martha scenes in “Knockdown”?
AM:
We will see the depth of the emotion of the family. I’m not sure if you could call it bonding per se. [Laughs] I’m not sure if you could call Martha taking Castle to task for his issues [bonding], but you do see his issues. And I think part of the fun of that [“Knockdown”] scene was Martha — who can be at times a flibbertigibbet and we love that larger-than-life aspect to her and whenever she comes to the room, it’s like she’s got her own personal spotlight with her. But when push comes to shove, she’s a tremendously strong woman and she can lay down the law. And it seemed like in those moments, they contrast with the other moments and it makes it really powerful.

Will you be tuning in to CASTLE tonight?

You soooooooooo didn’t answer the ‘end of Josh’ question. I simultaneously love and hate you for that.

    Otherwise, I can’t wait!

@Helen: I think she can’t know the answer to that question. She watched only the first part and Josh is in the second one, too. So if they break up, it will be revealed in the next episode…

anyway, I knew I would have hated the orange suit guy -.- and I bet Castle forces Alexis to leave with Martha at the end. I would do the same if I knew it’s too dangerous to stay in NY

Surely you don’t have to ask if we all will be watching Castle tonight?!! Of course we will! Thanks for more Castle love!!

@boby – Ah. I didn’t know the character was going to be in the second part too. Makes more sense why the non-answer now. Thank you.

(I am hoping he’s gone by the end of the second part though now.)

    DYING for this 2- parter!

Yes, absolutely love Castle. I love all of the characters. Castle and Beckett are so great together. Martha and Alexis are wonderful and I love their family dynamic. The detectives and Lainie have really grown on me too. Great ensemble.

I don’t even care about them getting together. It is such a fun show to watch.
What ever happened to the bar that Castle bought? I thought that was going to become the new place for them to hang out after cases.

Still loved the piano man episode and the engagement episode. Both endings were the entire cast and showed how well the ensemble now works together.
