BONES Scoop: Will Emily Deschanel Direct in Season 6? Will Cyndi Lauper Return?

March 9, 2011 by

Ever since BONES star Emily Deschanel excitedly shared with Give Me My Remote that she’d be making her directing debut this season, fans have been waiting for her to get a chance behind the camera. When I talked with Deschanel and BONES creator Hart Hanson in January, the plan was for her to direct one of the last hours of the year. But with the season quickly coming to a close, is that still going to happen?

Alas, the answer isn’t a good one.

“I don’t think she’s going to direct this season,” executive producer Stephen Nathan told me. “It became a very complicated issue scheduling-wise and I think we want her to do it when she’s fresh — probably the beginning of next year. It just became too difficult, partly because of traveling to Florida to do ‘The Finder’ episode. It just became a very complicated thing and it was a bit unfair to her and also a little bit to the show, because we would have had to write her out and we really didn’t want to end the year with Emily being light in a few shows. She’s the star of the show and we love to see her all the time!”

The news also isn’t great for those hoping to see Cyndi Lauper’s Avalon pop up this season.

“I don’t think we can work it out this year with the schedules,” he said. “We’re still trying, but between her schedules and how our schedules are shaping up, it doesn’t look as if Cyndi will be back this year. We’re heartsick. We love her.”

Are you okay with waiting until next season to have Deschanel direct and Lauper return?

When are they going to take Emily seriously? Ticks me off big time. She’s always the one that has to make concessions for the show. I knew it. I’m willing to bet that by the end of the show she still won’t have directed.

And boo on Cyndi Lauper not guest-starring as well. Though that’s not really their fault, darn schedules.

  2. Chris on March 9th, 2011 2:59 pm

Emily could not get her chance this year because the producers haven’t done their job properly.
As a fan, no Mr Nathan, I don’t prefer to have more Brennan in the episodes and see Emily missing her chance. Just because you messed up with the story, episodes and schedule.
    Shame on you.
Is there anything that is coming out of their mouths that is not irritating and disappointing?
    I’m offended as a woman.

  3. Lisa on March 9th, 2011 3:02 pm

I think next season they will come up with more “reasons” why it won’t be possible for Emily to direct. If you listen to HH & SN, they don’t want her to. That comes across loud and clear. If Emily wants to direct, she’s going to have to fight for it.

  4. Joan on March 9th, 2011 3:07 pm

Steven Nathan is trying to save face… too bad I don’t believe him any more. The more he tries to justify Emily not getting to direct this season, the more it sounds like flimsy excuses. Emily is too much of a class act to say anything public about it, but I have to think she would be dissappointed – as are so many fans of the show.

  5. Ericka Porras on March 9th, 2011 3:25 pm

More fallout from the Hannah debacle.

  6. Kikacr on March 9th, 2011 3:34 pm

I hate to say this but, it’s not a surprise, you can not believe anything coming from SN or HH anymore, since they started making excuses and delaying Emily’s opportunity I saw this result coming. What I can’t stand is the disrespect, I can’t believe they are doing this to Emily…I mean, we, the fans are used to his lies and bad teasing and even the moronic story arcs lately, but doing the same to your own star?? Shame on you!!
Emily deserve better, Bones fans deserve better. SN and HH need to accept that they ruined this season, and at this point, I just hope they don’t ruined the entire show. But his mistakes are not a reason to treat Emily this way. She’s an amazing actress and a good professional, then what’s his problem with her directing?, I am sure that she could do a great job, because I have faith in her. Shame on you Bones Producers, just another bullet to our hearts.

It’s too bad that ED has to pay for the HH/SN screw up this season. When they changed it the first time, they used AI lead in as an excuse. Well, that didn’t pay off like they wanted too. Now they are giving us several reasons in the one interview why she won’t be directing this season.

I understand why ED can’t direct this season. I’m not angry about it. It just makes me sad that a classy lady like ED has to pay for the HUGE MISTAKE that HH/SN has done to S6 and the series.

I also think to many people want HH/SN to just come straight out and say they screwed up but we will never hear that from them.

  8. Ericka Porras on March 9th, 2011 3:39 pm

Count on me as one of those people that wants to hear “a mea culpa”.

  9. Ty on March 9th, 2011 3:44 pm

I’m not okay with waiting because it’s just one symptom among many, many for how screwed up the season is.

I especially not ok because the reason given for holding back ED’ directorial debut was that they needed her as an actress for post AI episodes? Doing what, exactly? All she ever does now is moon over the sad drip that Booth has become. We never see her as the world renowned kicka$$ anthropologist anymore. Anyone watching the show for the first time would think she’s the secondary character.

I’ve never seen such hubris from showrunners over such a bad season. A mea culpa or some acknowledgment is needed to start winning back trust.

At this point, the ratings for Bones speak as much for the quality as the ratings for 2 1/2 Men. Unrelated to good stuff, a sad commentary on the junk we’ll watch.

  12. carole on March 9th, 2011 4:20 pm

as a fan I agreed nathan and his introduction of hannah to this show was a insult to fans and a hurt that fans still havent recovery from/emily deserves to direct an episodes. If not for her they wouldnt have a s6 and really not much hope for a s7.

  13. Cheesy Cheese on March 9th, 2011 4:22 pm

Please, please tell me the writers know this season is a fail so far. If they don’t, there’s no chance for a better season 7, and I want Bones to end well.

I think the ED directing is a touchy issue, at least for me, because they made Bones so pathetic this season and SN’s reasons for Emily being busy is a lousy one. I’d have been happy to see less of ED if the scenes she had showed her as the leading lady.

I did not enjoy the first sniper episode because there are too many unresolved issues. If HH and SN think just putting a gun in Booth’s hand and letting Bones “be there for Booth” is all it takes to keep viewers happy, they’re still in denial about the quality of the show.

  14. T- on March 9th, 2011 4:30 pm

Meanwhile, the DB fans come out in full force about how AMAZING his episodes are. Umm… they are amazing episodes because the writers/producers GIVE him the high profile episodes. And he had 1 episode directing stint before Bones. So after 6 seasons, this is a major insult to ED. The imbalance is pretty revealing and apparent in the show’s plot too. Either HH and SN have an embarrassing level of crush on Booth or they think all women just swoon over DB. Yuck yuck.

  15. Anonymous on March 9th, 2011 4:33 pm

Hey, this is good reporting on a fan question, and at least we got an answer.
Now, if only we can get a semi objective recap on board for an honest discussion of the show….

  16. Festina Lente on March 9th, 2011 4:46 pm

Uhm, and this is news… how? The interview consists basically in two questions, and for both the answer is “no”. Okay.

I am not surprised that Deschanel didn’t get a chance to direct. Everyone else has been too busy with the spinoff (btw, it just struck me that there seems to be a remarkable amount of silence about this in the fandom; compare this with few years ago, when we’d all have been waiting for the new show like crazy; but I digress). I think that Deschanel should be relieved she’s not directing. This season has been so poor it wouldn’t do her any favours to direct a sub-par episode. I do love her, and I hope she gets a chance to direct an episode soon, whether on this show or another.

As for Lauper, I honestly couldn’t care less. I find her character totally unpalatable.

  17. ellen on March 9th, 2011 4:48 pm

    aigh–
Do folks UNDERSTAND at all what it takes to direct an episode? How much preparation is required? Do folks UNDERSTAND that Emily puts in so many more hours as an actor than David on a weekly basis???? IT”S TOO MUCH WORK FOR HER at this point in the season…….
Good grief…….they’re shooting two eps at the same time–do you have any idea what that means?
PULEEZE–get a grip on reality here folks. Emily NOT directing is not the end of life as we know it, it’s not a slap to her and frankly, it’s good news for the show—she is the star, she is an amazing actor and honestly I’m more interested in watching her be the best actor on TV playing one of the most complicated characters on TV than watching her direct…….

  18. #notwinning on March 9th, 2011 4:55 pm

If Emily is the star, she should have the star scenes. But no, she’s either the butt of jokes or the supportive friend. Agree with others who said if she’s going to be that pathetic, it’s better to just have less scenes with her and put the ensemble cast to good use.

Also, like many others said, it’s just one “symptom” and “fallout” from how horrible this season is.

  19. Bridget on March 9th, 2011 4:55 pm

As one of the few people who is actually NOT angry with the writers about S6 in general, I have to say that I am disappointed with HH & SN for jerking Emily around like this. I knew once they pulled her off directing 6×14 there wouldn’t be another opportunity like that for her to direct this season. The whole reason for her to direct 6×14 was because Daredevil in the Mold was a Booth-heavy episode, so she’d have less on-screen time for that plus the whole winter break to prep for directing. But even after the Idol announcement was made & scripts were rewritten, DitM was STILL a Booth-heavy episode. They could have kept the sides the way they were (with just Angela out in the field with Booth), had Brennan’s scenes only in the beginning on the roof where they find the body and at the end at the FF with Booth (where she says, what – less than 20 words in that entire scene?), and nothing would’ve been lost in that episode at all. So the whole pretense of Idol being the reason they couldn’t work her in to direct an episode sounds like nothing but BS. I really hope they make this up to her.

  20. Mary on March 9th, 2011 5:25 pm

Saw it coming anyway and it’s not like we can trust anything from the writers’ mouthes anyway.

To be perfectly honest, I’m disappointed in ED for going along with the way her character was written this season. Being a team player only goes so far.

It sounds like DB has plenty of input on Booth, so if ED went along with HH and SN’s vision for Bones, she’s either just as clueless as they are or she lacks a forceful personality to push forward. Either way, I can see why HH and SN think they can push her around.

  21. Eve2 on March 9th, 2011 5:26 pm

ED is the only reason I now watch the show (a little for Hodgins and Cam) but I skipped most of the first half of this season due to their pathetic portrayal of Brennan. I don’t think she had a star role. She was more of either a comic relief in some episodes or a walking robot in others.

Why is DB given the opportunity to direct at least 3 times and not once for her? Yes, she is badly needed in episodes, because to me this season has just stunk and she (even in her ridiculous role this season) is the only thing to shine in this show in a while. Yes, DB is also a major star of the show. But the show is called Bones.

I have little faith in HH or SN in their leadership of the show. Very little of the upcoming spoilers even sound promising to be anymore. I continue to tape and watch after reviews. I will always be an Emily Deschanel fan, but I think she deserves more than these showrunners give her.

  22. Jess Dufour on March 9th, 2011 6:21 pm

Is it just me, or do 3/4 of the comments up there seem to be written by the same narrow minded person? I do not understand how anyone who is not directly and personally involved in the show can have ANY kind of an INFORMED opinion on how it is being run. You don’t like how the STORY LINE is going. Boo hoo; Get over it! There are enough fans of the show (that’s what it is, remember? A TELEVISION SHOW. Not to be confused with… what is it called again? Right. REALITY.) who are happy enough with how it’s been and how it will continue to be. You don’t like it? Don’t watch. Can you imagine for one second how infuriating it must be to be someone like Hart Hanson or Stephen Nathan and listen to reactions like these to something that they’ve poured their heart and soul into? This is THEIR creation. Let’s see some of you complainers try and successfully pull off something like a network television show.

  23. Eve2 on March 9th, 2011 6:26 pm

In response to HH, many fans understand the reasoning behind ED not being able to direct. It is just this is disappointing and added to the fact of how her character has been portrayed this season, it is just another thing to annoy fans. Of course, HH does not care about these fans. If you don’t agree with his SL, you are dimwitted. You don’t have to go on twitter to disagree. Many of us who have been long time fans just don’t like the show like we used to.
What many of us do appreciate is Emily Deschanel. Remember, she is the star of the show. You should be happy that many fans love her as they do. For me this season, she has been one of the few things to love on Bones.

  24. Try on March 9th, 2011 6:26 pm

@Jess Dufour, people are complaining about Emily not being able to direct NOT about the storylines. Why are you telling people not to watch?

Anyways, I knew she probably wasn’t going to direct. Stephen and Hart just didn’t seem like they wanted her to.

  25. Julie on March 9th, 2011 6:27 pm

WOW people.. how bout you settle down? Are you listening to yourselves? Good Lord. I’m not going to sit here and defend HH or SN to you, b/c you’ve all made up your minds, but you’re being REALLY OBTUSE to the realities of film-making. They’d have to WRITE HER OUT of TWO episodes in order for her to direct at this point in the season.

So, would you complain about the fact that she wasn’t in two episodes just so she could direct? Being that she’s the STAR OF THE SHOW? It’s not a competition between her and DB. In fact, if you’ve heard her most recent interview she’s been learning FROM him how to direct while you’re in an ep, just as she’s been learning how to direct from the other directors for their show. It’s an opportunity for her to get better before she does it. Get a grip, people! You’re making fans look insane.

  26. miche on March 9th, 2011 6:27 pm

    everyone just shut up!
Yes they were trying to have Emily direct this season. Yes, it’s a big deal, but did you not read the whole thing? They are busy, hardworking people, and with the new series they don’t have lots of time to train a new director, how to direct a huge national tv show!
I pretty sure they postponed Emily’s directing debut so she and all the people (producers & such) can have a great experience. It would be unfair to Emily if she only had a short amount of time to direct her own episode! Making her direct an episode in this short time will not only put pressure & stress on Emily, it will on the producers, writers, and everyone else who work everyday to bring us this FABULOUS show.
    geez

  27. Barbie on March 9th, 2011 6:31 pm

    Jess Dufour said everything. :)

    GET OVER IT.

I, for one, really loved this season and was sad to see Hannah go. She was a great character.n I hope HH and SN keep up the good work.

  28. skylark66 on March 9th, 2011 6:35 pm

People, IF the show was in as bad shape as you indicate, HH/SN would be crazy to let a rookie director direct this year. She will direct when she is ready and time allows. I don’t always agree with him but he is a smart, savvy showrunner with several successful series under his belt. Relax, tomorrow you can criticize and tear apart the latest episode. Hiatus must be really hard on you with nothing to complain about.

  29. :[ on March 9th, 2011 6:54 pm

Why are all the fans who are supposedly so happy with the show complaining about the complaints? You sure waste a lot of time telling people just how to watch the show. None of the negative comments are forcing other people to see the show a certain way. Are fans extra sensitive this season because no one in the media or fanbase except the real hardcore faithful think this season is working?

Yeah, individually and at some point, all the reasons for ED not directing made sense. But like everything else HH and SN have been saying, at this point, something stinks. DB only had one episode behind him when they started giving him episodes. And WORD to the idea of having less ED scenes as long as they are quality scenes worthy of the main heroine. The way this season was, I would have been thrilled with seeing less Bones, more Lab people.

  30. Coma Dream! on March 9th, 2011 7:02 pm

    @HartHanson @Marisaroffman
More than half the comments are NOT ignoring the logistics of the Biz. But the way Bones has been, many fans would have been happy to give up seeing Bones on screen to have ED direct. It’s a tradeoff I’d have been very happy with because there’s nothing appealing about the way the show has been portraying Bones.

  31. chubbybadass on March 9th, 2011 7:10 pm

Wow. Fans are rabid up in here. Truth be told as a long time fan (I’ve been watching since the first episode) this season hasn’t made me too happy. But then again, good things happen to those who wait…right? Some people want instant satisfaction and if they don’t get that then they aren’t happy. I can understand the frustration but geeze give HH & SN a break why don’t you? It’s not some X Files conspiracy theory as to why ED didn’t direct this season. Time is running out and the Bones story needs to unfold. I’d rather ED get to have her directorial debut next season when she gets plenty of time to do her thing. Shoving her into the directing chair now wouldn’t be fair to her or the fans that enjoy her work let alone the show itself.

That said I am bummed Cyndi Lauper couldn’t show up this season. But I have hope they’ll get her back. And maybe if I keep my fingers crossed I can also hope for a return of Stephen Fry as that would be splendid as well.

  32. Bridget on March 9th, 2011 7:12 pm

If it weren’t for the fact that Emily herself has said things like: “I broke them down…I kept asking and asking and knocking on their doors and asking and shaming and everything, so I am going to direct this season.” (GMMR) and “I wanted to direct because David Boreanaz got to direct, and I think it’s only fair that I get to do what he gets to do” (LA Times interview at Fox TCA Party 2011), and the fact that the writers had the timing and scripts worked out for Emily’s directorial debut before S6 even started (see GMMR interview), I don’t think people would be as upset. I understand why it would be impossible to pull off now, but I still hope she gets her chance.

  33. G on March 9th, 2011 7:16 pm

I think it’s a shame for Emily, since it’s clearly something that she’s keen to do, but I understand why it would be difficult to arrange. On the other hand, I know that Davis Boreanaz was not a first time director when he had a go, but it occurred to me recently that of the two episodes he has directed so far, both were big ‘Booth’ story lines, paritcularly the most recent sniper one. I know that actors who direct are generally written out of the episode prior to the one they direct, to give them time to prep, but still, both of those episodes would have been challenging acting wise, without having to direct on top. We shall see whether the next DB directed epi is of similar weight for his character.

Back to Emily, while it would be nice for her sake if she got a chance to direct, I am more than happy to see more Brennan on my screen. That said, I would really like to see more of her kicking ass as a world class forensic anthropologist. She has made a few discoveries this season that no one else picked up, including Hannah’s injury, but while brilliant, they were fleeting. I would love to see more of her showing why she is the world’s best (plus cinematically I love those scenes where she stares at the bones for hours or assembies a shattered skull).

  34. Lauren on March 9th, 2011 7:56 pm

Wow. You people REALLY need to chill. It’s not the end of the world. HH and SN don’t have it out to ruin your day and hold Emily back.

I’m a HUGE Bones fan, but ignorant comments like these make me wish I never ventured online.

  35. Dan Hanover on March 9th, 2011 8:08 pm

Does anyone really have the slightest idea what’s going on with Emily directing? It sounds like a bunch of people making assumptions and spewing venom because they have no lives. She has a hard job. Maybe she’s tried at the end of working all year. Maybe HH and SN are telling the truth. Maybe everyone should just chill and watch the show. And if you hate it so much, change the damn channel.

  36. Skole on March 9th, 2011 8:30 pm

Well, Marisa, you asked the question…although the way you phrased it was akin to waving a red flag to all the ranting trolls who want to vent at the showrunners. Then Hart Hanson Tweets his lament over these comments – the cynic in me respectfully suggests that the question could have been better phrased within the context of the news & that the reaction (overreaction) was entirely predictable.

My answer to your question: Am I okay with it? Personally, I would have like to have seen Emily spreading her wings as a Director sooner rather than later – but I think that I’m more disappointed in the asinine reaction of fans who feel like they have a divine right to question and second-guess highly successful players in TV Showbiz.

Not that my opinion actually matters to anyone but me – as a fan of BONES, it is really tiresome that ‘interest’ in this great show is largely whipped along by focusing on contrived ‘controversial’ snippets of information that serve very little purpose. If I could ask a question of someone who truly knows this business, I would ask – Do these ‘games’ between shows, showrunners, the media and fandoms actually influence ratings? Or is it just how things have always been done to generate / maintain ‘interest’? Surely it isn’t effective marketing…it’s marketing to the lowest common denominator, who just make the fandom a crappy place to hang out for people who have a genuine interest in the show.

  37. Mandy on March 9th, 2011 8:42 pm

After the way Brennan was written this season, as a pathetic, needy, angsty, I lub Booth, I want Booth, I’ll toss my pride aside for Booth, there was no way they would allow her to direct.

You don’t trash the lead actress for a recurring character and turn around and give her the clout to direct.

  38. Cher_ios on March 9th, 2011 8:47 pm

I’m not too fussed either way if ED directs or not, but I really take issue with the way Hart Hanson has been speaking to / about his fans. It’s beyond rude, if we don’t agree with him we are idiots apparently? Someone should give him some lessons in engaging his clients (fan base) in social media.

  39. David is Great on March 9th, 2011 8:50 pm

@T, David Boreanaz is a GREAT DIRECTOR!!! And yes I am one if the many women that drool over DB. GET OVER IT.

  40. AmandaFriend on March 9th, 2011 9:27 pm

It’s sad that ED won’t get a chance to direct this season. After a season of putting in long hours and taking on so many other demands in the interest of the show, it’s a shame that she won’t get her shot.

I’m looking forward to her getting her shot next season.

  41. duh...winning! on March 9th, 2011 10:37 pm

“@marisaroffman Good Lord! What is WRONG with those commenters at the end of your piece? Such misplaced, ill-informed, dimwitted fury!”

You made the bed, Hart Hanson. Lie in it.

  42. Shep on March 9th, 2011 10:53 pm

Bottom line…$&#@ happens. I could see if Emily had come out and said something about that matter, but she didn’t. I’m sick of fans who choose to launch attacks on behalf of actors, since they know what they’re feeling.

  43. frut on March 9th, 2011 11:26 pm

    Skole- right on.
Cher_ios- these negative comments are (inappropriate) judging, not disagreeing. he has every right to be pissed and also not act like a doormat just because people are nuts. and its the nuts that then ruin it for everyone if they go too far.

  44. Eve2 on March 9th, 2011 11:27 pm

After thinking about it, just because I no longer enjoy the show the way I used to, it has made me more vocal about my opinions. I think I need to follow the advice of some here, and just stop watching altogether.

But these fans should be careful of what they wish for. If all of the unhappy fans stop watching, what will this do to ratings? Just remember, major tv critics were not “high” on Bones early this season. It is not just the “crazy” fans. Did HH call them dim witted?

  45. sara on March 10th, 2011 12:13 am

I think fans just want nathan to admit what we all know,he made a huge mistake in saying fans would go from hate to love for hannah/I didnt even get to liked.

  46. frut on March 10th, 2011 12:21 am

critics are a different story. they do their job and people can agree or disagree. people can also stop watching. that speaks for itself, that is what the business is. show canceled. no big deal. and i think some critique is fine. its natural. but there seem to be two levels of criticisms, one of which passes the boundaries of emotional stability and rational thinking, and that judges based on some unhealthy and inappropriate attachment to something. and its not always obvious- can be very insidious. it is these comments that, by their nature, can end up the most vocal and have negative effects. and are a little disconcerting.

  47. Hi! on March 10th, 2011 1:35 am

And the positive squeeing and drooling isn’t emotion based?! I’m not supporting the negative judgments, but positive comments aren’t necessarily constructive criticism either. It’s the nature of online fan reaction and if the tide has turned, it’s up to the showrunners to understand the underlying discontent.

Without getting bogged down with the petty arguments, I do get weird vibes.

  48. Drippan on March 10th, 2011 2:39 am

People aren’t just upset with ED not directing but it all “Part of the Sum of the Whole”.

It’s having a coma/dream sequence for the S4 finale. It was the ‘Sex is Real’ and ‘it won’t be a dream’ lies that were told. It is the ‘Who are you’ in that episode. It is all the inconsistancies throughout S5. It was the ‘Booth moving on/he would become a stalker’ b.s. It’s having Parker tell his daddy to go to war. It was about making Cam a total idiot in the S6 premiere. It was shoving Hannah down our throats to like her vice writing a really good SO storyline. It was Booth proposing to Hannah then throwing away the ring. It’s about making Booth a spoiled brat who throws a temper tantrum when he didn’t get his way. It’s about Brennan become needy and pathetic. It’s about having to failed season finales in a row.

When will HH/SN realize that they are no longer trusted by the fans because of these reasons? Does HH really think name calling helps to rebuild that trust that he has lost? Or does he just think that fans should just shut up and trust him?

‘The Little Engine That Could’ has been destroyed by the engineer but he’s looking at the passengers and blaming them for their attitudes.

First of all this has become a horrible cycle. It takes two tango my friends. There has been so much crap thrown at HH and SN so much that if they seem unappreciative of the fans, well I can’t blame them. Not to mention that occasionally to me (who is a major Bones fan) that some of the fans like throwing tantrums or at the very least don’t take the time to explain their thought process that gets them to the outcome. Next, let go of The End in the Beginning thing. How do you even know that it was actually a lie? The first part could be a snippet from their future. Mostly, I am coming back to being angry with the a portion of Bones Fandom. I don’t like that. As for the ED directing thing I am bummed she doesn’t get to this season but you know what LIFE happens. Sometimes we all mess up scheduling make mistakes and what not.

Do me a favor people instead of stating what you don’t buy on the show or what not, tell others why you don’t. I really can understand why HH is condescending to the fans. It’s because sometimes people act all immature. I am going to go with we aren’t all teenagers so grow up and act your ages ladies and gentlemen. The problem that is unveiling is HH and SN’s view or perspective about Bones isn’t the exact same as some of the fans. At this moment, I am going to say DEAL with it. Leave or get over it. Stop holding grudges. Honestly, I can understand why it looks like HH wasn’t being truthful about the scene in TEITB. When the episode ended it was dream.

I am thinking that HH and SN like play with their words when it comes to saying certain things or spoilers. Oh and now that I’ve calmed down I am good. Everyone who’s angry with this or HH’s comment go back to it if you must. Not because I agree with you but because I hit the I don’t care point now. Have a lovely day all.
    Amber

    @Drippan

It surprises me that you are now calling on Hart Hanson for name calling. Pot calling the kettle black! It is too easy for you to neglect that you have been all over the boards calling Hart Hanson stupid, at one time called a show’s fan Hart Hanson’s lap dog, moderating a forum that allows members to use the F-word toward the showrunners.

Go back and read all your posts, you are actually the pathetic Booth who throws tantrums when he does not get what he wants. Oh wait, Booth is actually a fictional character while you are not.

  51. Rosie on March 10th, 2011 5:18 am

I love how the comments went from being totally out there (while I actually agreed with a fair bit of it, I think some of it was a bit too rude), to realising that HH is reading the comments, and suddenly loads of people are sucking up and sending similar ‘stop da hate!’ comments. :P

  52. Amber on March 10th, 2011 5:54 am

And then there’s me who didn’t make a comment to suck up to HH. It’s a repeating problem for me. I mean other fans just throwing crap at them and what not. We go through a good period (by this I mean fans for the majority are good with a recent Bones episode) and then there’s one they don’t like or something is said or comes to light and then Bam! Fans are all over HH and SN because they don’t agree. If you want my comment about Bones in general without defense of HH and SN then here it is.

I liked Hannah. Didn’t love her but I didn’t hate her. Was she a plot device? Absolutely. A weak one? I am thinking most likely. Do I think Booth should have waited for Bones instead of moving on? Yeah, I would have preferred that. Do I absolutely always agree with HH and SN’s decisions? Not necessarily. Do the two mess with us fans and their wording when it comes to spoilers? I have little doubt.

There it was. Now, like I said before this stuff between HH, SN and the fans is a cycle. They do something we don’t like we throw crap. They end up responding and sometimes only infuriate fans more. This in turn leads to fans throwing more crap. It’s a vicious cycle. Should there be a change? You bet. Will there be? Doubtful. I am going to then go with both sides( HH, SN and the fans) need to suck it up and realize the other isn’t the only one at fault. We engage in it. Deal with it.

  53. Ina on March 10th, 2011 7:16 am

I agree with Amber all the way.

  54. carl on March 10th, 2011 9:39 am

Fans everyone think in the 100th episodes they didnt even mention parker and he had to be at least 2 yrs old. right? when booth and bones met.

  55. Alesandra on March 10th, 2011 10:28 am

Wow, this is very interesting. Hart Hanson is a clever man. The comments were first about him and the decisions being made on the show. Now, he sends a tweet about comments being “dim-witted” and now the commentors are attacking each other. This is straight out of “The Art of War”, isn’t it?

Maybe if we all keeping fighting each other, we won’t continue to ask the tough questions about the direction of the show and our concerns about the drastic drop storytelling quality this season. Smart, isn’t it? Well played, Mr. Hanson…

  56. Drippan on March 10th, 2011 11:01 am

Boy. I love it when you throw crap back at me because obviously I struck a nerve by stating a fact.

Dismissing S4 finale is asinine. Like I wrote, it is all part of the sum of the whole. Some people think the sex was real and some called it b.s. Who are you to tell me that I should take it as real sex? Even HH/SN said it was real to B&B meaning it wasn’t real to the rest of the world. It was a ‘mind f—’ between the two characters and that was it.

HH/SN has made one rule their top priority right before S4 started and that is to keep B&B seperated as long as possible. How many times does HH have to mention that if he got B&B together that the series would end? This tells me one of two things: 1. He does believe in the ‘Moonlighting Curse and refuses to admit it 2. He doesn’t have the faith/trust in his or his writers creativities. He is going to throw everything out there including the kitchen sink to keep them apart no matter the cost of destroying his characters.

I actually understand more than HH thinks about why they don’t have ED directing. You don’t put your homerun hitter on the bench when the outcome of the game is still in the air. Keeping ED in front of the camera is the best place for her at this time just like SN stated in the interview. Not only do they love her like this but so do the fans.

The saddest part about this whole thing is that you can see the mistrust from the fans towards HH/SN. It’s sad that they can’t take them at their word anymore because of past behavior or comments. It’s sad that a Castle interview turned into most of the comments asking AM not to “Pull a Bones”. It’s sad that AM has to reassure his fans that he’s “Heart, not Hart”. It’s sad that HH tries to use AM’s tweet to say ‘I told you so’ to his fans.

Bones used to be ‘The Little Engine That Could’. As Hodgins said in the 100th episode “You ever feel like you saw something great that almost happened, then it didn’t?”. That’s they way I feel about Bones now. What once was great is now just mediocre.

IMO, Bones’ ‘The Little Engine That Could’ is the story as told by Damon Wayan in the movie, Major Payne. It starts out really nice then all of a sudden, BOOM, the train gets blown off it’s tracks with spit & blood & ass flying in all directions. The enemy (fans) moves in and the guards (HH/SN) are trying to fight their way out.

  57. andrea on March 10th, 2011 11:06 am

It seems to me the fans are more upset about ED not directing this season that ED is herself. Emily is the ultimate professional and knows that’s show business~ things happen and that”s just the way it works out sometimes. She seems to be the kind of person that takes things in stride and doesn’t get bent out of shape over things she can’t control. ED will direct when the time is right. I don’t think HH is holding her back from directing-everything works out when it works out. Emily smartly is preparing herself by continuing to observe and learn from DB who has had experience in directing prior to Bones, as well as from her father who is a cinematographer/director. I think fans need to keep it in perspective and stop seeing ulterior motives where there probably aren’t any!

  58. andrea on March 10th, 2011 11:19 am

Also I think that ED’s professional reaction to HH and SN decision-not fussing and complaining, crying/whining-really is impressive and that as soon as they are able to make it happen, TPTB will make it happen for her. No one likes a spoiled brat star! She’s’ not a pushover either, but very wise and knows when to pick her battles and when to go with the flow. HH and SN know that EB wants to direct-she’s made is very clear-I think it will definitely happen in S7.

  59. frut on March 10th, 2011 12:40 pm

Hi!- i agree! i absolutely did not mean just negative critique. the ‘positive’ often surpasses those boundaries much more. although, what i mean is that i worry “online fan reaction” (to anything) becomes overpowered by that ‘nut’ quotient, to put it very crudely. i’m not sure the process has developed a good balance yet and also does not represent majority- just tv show internet commenting inclined majority.
and what does someone reading comments have anything to do with what you say or how you feel? that’s part of the problem- why would anyone commenting ever think they are “sucking up” to someone who has no connection to them at all. people can take something completely non-personal and take it personally and return with personal attacks. then get mad when the person reciprocates and claim they asked for it!
this does bring up a serious issue that highlights emotional problems and misplaced loyalties.

  60. Drippan on March 10th, 2011 12:40 pm

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that ED will probably direct one of the first 3 episodes of S7.

To me, this discussion is about fans making sure that ED does get a chance to direct no matter what it takes. That we are supporting her in her endeavors and backing her 100%.

If that means calling the show runners sexiest or blaming their mistakes of S6 or for whatever reason people stated, it seems to have worked since HH definately got the message THAT FANS WANTS ED TO HAVE A SHOT AT DIRECTING. It doesn’t matter what reason they give or the reasons we give, that is the ultimate goal.

And it’s not about how ED feels about this situation. She may be understanding or she may be a little upset. Who knows except her? It’s about the fans giving 110% of their support to her. She may even be upset about some of the posts but you can’t tell me the girl can’t feel the love!!

  61. frut on March 10th, 2011 12:41 pm

… i’m sorry, though, i don’t mean to add to any arguing. it was weakness, i should just stay away from comments. :(

  62. Tiffany on March 10th, 2011 12:56 pm

Honestly, I think HH and SN bring this kind of criticism on themselves. They have both stated how much they like to mess with their fans. Well, this is what happens when you mess with people, they get upset. And actually going onto a public forum and calling people names? Really? How unprofessional can you get?!

  63. andrea on March 10th, 2011 1:06 pm

I think that it’s good there’s so much fan support for ED to direct-don’t get me wrong. I anticipate her directorial debut too! If HH and co. are reading these boards- the message comes across loud and clear-fans want to see Emily get her chance to direct! However, I also think TPTB have an agenda- schedules/plans to adhere to and that they know when the time for Emily to direct will happen. I just don’t think that fans will “push” HH and co. to have Emily direct any sooner than they decide. Or any sooner than the schedule allows. I’m not sure how much effect all the vocal fans will have on their decision! Just my opinion!

  64. sims on March 10th, 2011 1:13 pm

Okay I’m dissappointed with this season too.

Not because of Hannah (largely because Booth himself used the word ‘adjusted’ rather than ‘moving on’ + saying he loved H isnt the same as saying he DOESNT love Bones). I’m dissappointed because the writers have sidestepped a lot of the stuff we usually love about Bones not only has Bone’s expertise taken a back-step but they’ve made Booth out to be less savvy as well. Hopefully they’ll bring both charactors up to scratch for next season.

I am sad for ED that she won’t get the chance to direct. Not sure why some people are comparing this to DB though. Okay he only directed one ep of the last season of Angel (would’ve been two if not for his knee operation) but like ED he had to push to start directing then. And they still kept him off rotation for the first few seasons of Bones.

Also ED’s already admitted how much time she’d put into learning the art so who know’s maybe she’s relieved to have a little more time to get into the headspace – especially since this season’s been such a mess and therefore even more hectic for the actors. Remember directing is not just about turning up for the filming its a lot of prep and post work too.

  65. Paula on March 10th, 2011 3:35 pm

Gillian Anderson wrote and directed an episode centered in her character back in 2000 in X Files. Maybe ED and the whole Bones staff could get some tips with her. Just saying.
We love ED and want her to direct. The producers have to put themselves together and do it!

  66. Amber on March 11th, 2011 3:19 am

@Drippan Were you directing some of your first comment at me? Because I never specifically meant I was talking to you. It really is meant in general because there are so many others hung up on it not being real. I never said that The End in the Beginning was insignificant. Nor did I say that B&B opening scene was not important. The scene is what it is, right now. You don’t actually know what’s going on inside Hart Hanson’s head. I don’t either. That’s all I feel like saying because really I am losing interest in this.
    Have a good day.
    Amber

  67. holla on March 18th, 2011 11:55 pm

It’s so nice to see so much support for Emily! She is so talented and totally deserves a chance to direct. It just goes to show how super-classy she is that isn’t making a thing about this. She has earned my respect 100%!
