THE VOICE: Kelsey Rey and Frenchie Davis Talk About Audience Misperception

May 3, 2011 by

There is a brand new episode of THE VOICE tonight!

Yes, the NBC show is already my guilty pleasure, so when Frenchie Davis (Team Christina), Jeff Jenkins (Team Adam), Kelsey Rey (Team Cee Lo) and Patrick Thomas (Team Blake) participated in a conference call with reporters today, I jumped on the chance to talk with the contestants. There was only so much they could say because they aren’t a part of tonight’s episode.

However, when I asked them if they were surprised to see how they were portrayed on the first episode of the show, there was a brief silence.

“I might as well say it,” Kelsey said. “Some people definitely portrayed me in the wrong way, because I have been getting some comments — some negative comments — saying I may be too cocky, or conceited and I’m pretty sure the three people who are with me on this call would say that if [the people commenting] knew me, they’d know that’s not the truth.”

Her fellow contestants immediately piped up to agree with Kelsey.

“Kelsey was my roommate during this process when we were staying at the hotel and people who think that she’s cocky couldn’t be more wrong,” Frenchie said. “She is a sweet, sweet girl. That is my little sister, I’ve adopted her, she’s fantastic. And I feel like sometimes there may be a little validity to the point that Kelsey was trying to make. We assume — let’s face it, the industry is full of beautiful girls who may not be great singers. And Kelsey’s a gorgeous girl and people probably do look at her and assume that that’s what she is and she doesn’t have musical talent. I think that she’s an excellent example of how this show works in reverse. She’s not just a pretty face. She has a heart of gold and is a smart girl and she’s talented. And I don’t think there is anything wrong with her acknowledging that.”

“It’s hard because that was one thing I didn’t want to be portrayed as,” Kelsey said. “I think a lot of people saw it like that because at the end, I did say, ‘I have been looked at as the pretty face who can sing.’ For once in my life, I’m shown as a singer. It’s a great thing and it’s an amazing accomplishment for me and I’m really proud of myself in that sense and I wish people could see that. But not everybody is going to like you.”

“You can’t please everybody and keep your sanity,” Frenchie agreed. “They’ll get over it.”

It was super sweet that Frenchie immediately stood up for her “little sister,” but do you agree with her?

I’m watching the new episode right now and it seems like they saved the least impressive singers for this episode. Last week there was only one singer that seemed out of place, there’s already a few on this episode.
