HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER’s Craig Thomas Spills on The Wedding in Season 6’s Finale, Barney’s Future, an Eriksen Baby and More

May 16, 2011 by

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER will wrap its sixth season this evening with a bit of a bang.

Though the show has a two year pick up, co-creator Craig Thomas says he does consider it to be in “act 3” and, as he and Carter Bays mentioned last summer, the writers are really leaning into the notion that the end is “glimps-able.” Thomas says the sixth season finale will raise new and intriguing questions that will absolutely be part of what steers them to the series finale.

And he was kind enough to drop a few more hints on what’s happening…

Nora, the one girl — other than Robin — whom Barney has shown genuine interest in, returns for the season 6 finale. What can you tell us about this?
CT: Well, part of the theme [underlying] Barney reconnecting with his dad this year has been about him opening the door just a teeny, tiny crack to peer into family life — a life where maybe there is a future of marriage and kids. He’s glimpsing that his own father has that kind of happiness in his life and it’s a little bit more intriguing to Barney than Barney would’ve expected. And we definitely come back to that theme in the finale as Barney looks ahead and Nora pops back up. She’s someone who was very sweet and nurturing and of course Barney completely screwed it up, but now she [will resurface].

Rumor has it that Robin’s romantic feelings for Barney will also resurface.
CT: Yes, I think the fans who love Robin and Barney will enjoy the finale because there’s a surprising little flicker of their past romantic life together. And it’s really interesting to see. There’s one particular scene in the finale between Barney and Robin that just gets me every time. Sitting in the editing room, it played over and over again, and every single time, I was just amazed by how good those two are together. It’s one of my favorite scenes this season — the two of them in the back of a cab, having this little sort of remembrance of their relationship — it’s really, really bittersweet and great.

There’s a lot of buzz about the fact that we’ll finally find out whose wedding we saw Ted and Marshall attending in the 6th season premiere.
CT: Yeah, our season ends as it began, in this flash forward to a wedding that is “a little ways down the road,” as we’re putting it. We don’t want to tell people exactly when or where it is, but in the finale, you will definitely learn more about the “who” of this wedding.

Can you say whether or not the bride and the groom are people we already know?
CT: I don’t want to give anything away! But I think it will be satisfying and yet also raise new questions for people.

Of course fans have speculated that it’s Robin and Barney’s wedding. I know you can’t comment on that, but we do know that Robin probably won’t end up back in Barney’s arms right away, since you’ve already confirmed that Nora will be around next season. Also, Michael Trucc0’s character — Robin’s secret crush whom we recently met — will return as well.
CT: Yeah. Michael Trucco will be back. We really dug him and we expect to see him in season 7 too.

Switching gears to Marshall and Lily, can you say anything about what’s in store for them?
CT: The Marshall and Lily issues around his employment and whether or not they’re going to have a kid are definitely going to come back up again. But Marshall is certainly going to want to have some sort of steady job before they get back on the kid train.

Is that something that will be more of a season 7 storyline than season 6?
CT: Again, I don’t want to say.

Interesting. Very interesting! Well, is there anything else you want to tease?
CT: I think this finale is one of the better finales we’ve done. It’s definitely one of my favorite episodes of this season. The last two minutes of it are set to this George Harrison song and it’s like everything that happened this season sort of comes back around in these last two minutes and then sort of propels us forward to this glimpse of the future that’s really intriguing. It’s a huge last two minutes. It reminds me a lot of the end of season 1 in that so much happens at the end of the year.

Awesome.

What do you guys think is going to go down in the last two minutes of season 6 tonight?

Will Lily find out she’s pregnant? Will we see Robin walking down the aisle to Barney? Or maybe it will be Nora in the wedding dress? Or, perhaps, no one we know?

Thoughts? Theories? Bets and wagers?

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER’s Season 6 finale airs Monday, May 16 at 8 p.m. on CBS. Will you watch?

I really hope it’s Robin and Barney. Nora is okay and nice and I don’t mind her being back next season, but I really want Robin and Barney to end up together.

Nora is an interesting and a fun character but I do not see her with Barney long term. Robin should end up with Barney but then again I’m not one of the writers….just a Robin & Barney fangirl!

By the way, they are tottally on my HIMYM calendar for my birth month. Destined to be together? I think so.

Cobie Smulders (aka Robin) also hopes Barney and Robin end up together. I’ll have a video interview with her posted later today, in which she says so!

well who wouldn’t want to end up with Barney or NPH for that matter?
