Is Chris Meloni Leaving LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT?

May 24, 2011 by

Uh oh.

TVLine is reporting that NBC’s contract negotiations with LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT star Chris Meloni (Det. Stabler) have broken down and he won’t be returning for the upcoming 13th (!) season. NBC could not confirm the news at this time.

His co-star, Mariska Hargitay (Det. Benson), has already inked a deal to return next season, but will allegedly be phased into a more minor role midway through the season.

If Meloni’s departure is true, we’ve already seen Stabler’s last episode. The SVU season finale, “Smoked,” aired last week and there was no closure for the character.

What do you think SVU fans? Are you okay with Meloni leaving? Or are you hoping for a last-minute contract signing?

If Chris leaves and Mariska goes to a minor roll, the show will go downhill! I know I won’t watch it! Chris and Mariska are the reason why the show does so well. NBC has blown a good thing in letting Chris go!!

I just read that his rep confirmed he’s leaving. That just makes Smoked as the season finale even more craptastic. I want him back but I have to imagine at this point nothing they could say would get him back. It would be great if they could at least bring him back for one ep for closure. But this is SVU where there is no such thing as a continuity. I’ve put up with a lot from this franchise and I think this is the final straw. They really should just retroactively cancel the show rather than pooring money into a failing final season. My Wednesday night TV viewing just got blown wide open.

So when does Southland start back again? (Yep, that’s right, the show NBC cancelled and TNT ran with.)

It makes me sad. I hadn’t even thought of the fact that it was his last episode! I loved the finale, I really did, but…. I’m gonna miss Stabler!
