CASTLE Season 4 Cast Photo

August 24, 2011 by

CASTLE creator Andrew Marlowe has made no secret of show’s winks to classic films, so it’s only appropriate that the latest cast photo for the upcoming season seems to pay homage to the detective stories of yesteryear.

And while CASTLE isn’t the only series to tackle the noir genre for a promotional photo recently, there is no denying the cast makes it look good.

Check out their season 4 photo…

    Bones copycat detected.

We all know Castle has mimicked Bones since the start but this is very much tongue in cheek methinks!!

I like it! Nathan Fillion looks so yummy. That is all.

this show is really copying Bones too much… they need to get their own stuff together.

Thanks for sharing that fantastic cast photo, Marissa!

Side note: What is it with you “Bones” fans thinking your show is so groundbreaking?
    A. “Bones” is inspired by the life and work of forensic anthropologist/mystery writer Kathy Reichs, while “Castle” creator Mr. Marlowe has said from the very beginning that the show is inspired by classic Hollywood films like The Thin Man, His Girl Friday, etc. Just this past season (S3), it had an episode with plenty of nods to film noir like “The Maltese Falcon” (http://castletv.net/the-noir-connection/8372#more-8372). Since the show’s more focused on the whodunit aspect of the mystery than the forensics, it actually has a lot more in common with the noir genre than “Bones.”
    B. “Bones” is hardly the first show to feature a male and female lead with sexual tension (Remember, “Moonlighting?” Even that show is not the first…).
    C. If you don’t like the show, ignore it. There’s really no need to say anything else.

These “such a copycat” comments are getting old.

  7. lysa on August 25th, 2011 3:23 am

@casper I talked about the poster….. Bones had the same 2 years ago, and had in project to do an episodes in the 30s… but didn’t because Fringe did..

. I don’t want to begin a contreversy, but you have to admit some similarities ….

and what about the male black captain who let his place to a female black captain (Goodman/ Cam anyone)

    end of the discussion.

Andrew Marlowe may say that he is not HART, but Bones certainly has more ART.

@casper, you cannot fault Bones fans for stating their observation. To begin with, the article itself has a link to Bones’ own poster. So maybe, you could have asked, “What was the point of linking the Bones poster in the article?” when the author knows very well and has admitted that fans of each show are very territorial of the show that they support. The copycat comments are not getting old, for while the Castle producers claim that they are not going the Bones route, what they have come up with in the show, and this promo, show otherwise.

OMG, Bones did a noir still, Castle did a noir still, Fringe did a noir episode. OMG, Bones has a therapist, Law and Order had a therapist, The Mentalist had a therapist, The Closer has had a therapist. OMG, Bones did a severed body, Body of Proof did a severed body. OMG, H5O did a murder during a triathlon, Rizzoli and Isles did a murder during a marathon. OMG, Bones killed Santa, The Mentalist killed Santa. OMG, The Mentalist did a boxing episode, Bones did a boxing episode. OMG, Bones, The Mentalist, and Castle, all did an alien abduction episode. OMG, Bones has done a mobster murder, H5O has done a mobster murder, The Closer has done a mobster murder, In Plain Sight has done a mobster murder, everyone has done a mobster murder. OMG, Bones had a episode with witches, Rizzoli and Isles had an episode with witches. OMG, Castle did an episode with a physic, The Mentalist did a episode with the physic. OMG, everyone has done a serial killer. OMG, Bones did a child abduction, Rizzoli and Isles did a child abduction, Castle did a child abduction. OMG, everyone has done a “dirty cop” episode. Wait a minute. Who’s copying who?

I could go on and on with this, but I’ve limited myself to just several of the shows that I’m currently watching. If I included all procedural’s, I’d never get to end of it, I imagine. Bones is not unique, they are not ground breaking, and other procedural s are not “copying” them. They are one of many. All procedural’s have the same basic premise and they all do the same basic thing. How many shows have characters with tragedy in their pasts? How many of them have a “will they-won’t they” couple? I’m not sure that I can count that high.

They have similarities because they all know what makes a good story. In addition, all these show have something that make them “unique” their own twist on the story. Bone’s twist, I have always thought, has been to come from the forensic angle with a unique personality. Castle’s twist, IMO, is the author looking for the story and the unique perspective and style that he brings to crime solving. Both Bones and Castle have grown and deepened and become “more” in their own unique way.

Castle from the very beginning has been giving tribute to and has been influenced by film noir and classic cinema. From old movie lines and references to classics within the episodes, to stills in previous years. Look back at some of photos in years past and you can see it. Look at the photos from the TV Guide Magazine cover story, it’s a nice tribute to classic cinema. Castle has been doing this since day one, a film noir still is just another part of that, IMO. It’s fantastic looking, and it takes nothing away from Bones, which also had a fantastic film noir still.

Preferring one over the other doesn’t mean that “your show” is superior, nor does it mean that other shows are trying to follow it. It just means that that’s the show you like. Why the need to put down one show over another? It’s a bit petty to my mind. As a viewer who watches both, I can appreciate the similarities and at the same time see that both shows are wildly different. The way they have chosen to handle the relationship, humor, drama, the unveiling of the characters back-story are each uniquely their own. When you really look at both shows and how they have chosen to tell their stories, it’s like the difference between night and day. Accusations of “copying” just don’t hold water when you get past the superficial and look at the “meat” of the show.

Who cares if Castle copied Bones. Bones doesn’t hold a candle to Castle! I love it! And in today’s day and age there is very few “new” things coming out. There are practically similarities in EVERYTHING…so seriously get over it people! Castle and Bones can exist together it’s not like they’re even on the same night/time. I love this cast photo & the show!

    ST, WAY TO GO! 😀
Do I believe Bones is an excellent show? Yes. Do I believe Bones owns the genre? No.
IT IS JUST A PHOTO SHOOT, FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE GET OVER IT!
The topics might be overused. Hell, it’s not EASY to come up with stuff, especially in a genre like this! So sometimes the best you can do is to deal with something common in an uncommon way. Give Castle a chance to do their thing. Bones has twice the number of seasons, how is it even fair to compare the two? :S
For example, a heroine with a tragedy. Used often, but would we enjoy Castle half as much without Beckett’s mom’s thing?
Sometimes I feel the Castle writers are purposely doing stuff to taunt people who obsess over how they’re copying 😛

    Well said Aiswarya…
Even if Bones made it first Castle is more gripping .. in a way that makes not to miss a min.
looking at the responses, certainly Booth’s personal loss can not be compared with Kate’s thing..

    — no matter how far they are stretching the Kate’s loss .. Castle still brings some smile here and there…

My fav episodes — S02 17 and 18 with Dana Delany as FBI agent..
