BONES Season 7 Preview: You Ask, I Answer on ‘The Memories in the Shallow Grave’ and ‘The Hot Dog in the Competition’

October 7, 2011 by

We’re less than a month away from the BONES season premiere! Are you excited?!

Fox officially released the first two hours of season 7 to the press earlier today, which means I have some answers to a few of your burning questions!

Before we get into the teases, please understand I’m not going to be the jerk who spoils everything. a) I think it’s a selfish thing to do and b) it’ll ruin some of the fun for you guys getting to experience it for yourself. If you like being teased? Awesome. This should do the trick. If you want me to tell you frame-by-frame what happens, that isn’t what you’ll be getting here. Apologies, but I’m just not comfortable with doing that.

We all good?

Keep reading for some season 7 teases!

Do we get to see any flashbacks from those previous 6 months we [didn’t] get onscreen?? – via karinvburkart on Tumblr
Sorry, but aside from one quick home video, we’re set fully in the present time.

Are they looking natural and happy as a couple? Do you think [their] new status didn’t change anything [in] their chemistry? – via @wellsbones on Twitter
If any fans were concerned that Booth and Brennan coupling up would change their dynamic, I am happy to say that at least for me, nothing was missing. Given how radically different they will always be in terms of their core values, that spark and banter is still alive and well, even if they are much more affectionate than they have ever been on-screen.

Will viewers have a Sweets “overdose” after watching the first two hours? – via @amc815 on Twitter
No. While there is a bit less of Brennan — which is understandable given how pregnant Emily Deschanel (Brennan) was in real-life when these were filmed and that she’ll be appearing in every episode — it didn’t feel like we got significantly more Sweets than last year.

How is getting another woman pregnant w/o marriage affecting Booth? – via @BrennanBooth on Twitter
While you may like to see that issue explored (and so would I!), it isn’t brought up in the first two hours of the season.

Please tell me that Brennan will get emotional about her pregnancy or about her baby at some point. – via @sofiamlima on Twitter
My two favorite scenes of the second hour actually have to deal with Brennan’s pregnancy. One is a moment she shares with Booth and the other is something we’ve seen her do dozens of times before — but this time she includes her baby bump into the mix, which may have made me someone a little teary. Hypothetically speaking, of course. (I will deny this later.)

When will we see the uber-awesome Caroline. – via @SouthernFanGirl on Twitter
The uber-awesome Caroline shows up in episode two to have a few words with Cam about her newest hire. Sadly, she doesn’t share any scenes with Booth and Brennan, so can we get her back ASAP, please?

Are we going to see some Cam’s reactions about those pregnancies/ maternity stuff? – via @lysaleelee on Twitter
While we don’t see her personal reaction to the pregnancy/baby, we do see that she has a professional rule the new mother and mother-to-be may have some difficulty following.

Will we see Angela and Hodgins baby in the first 2 episodes? – via @MiraCristine
You will! Little Michael appears in the premiere and my goodness, that child is freaking adorable. And, it seems, he has the ability to get his parents out of trouble. (Which may be helpful with the aforementioned rule Cam has at work.)

Will Brennan [want] to stab him because he seems to want to be there for everything? via @Rayne73 on Twitter
Well, to be fair, the things Booth wants to be there for are pretty important. But so far, Booth isn’t overstepping too many lines.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how excited are the shippers going to be? – via @BadgerNoble on Twitter
While Brennan makes some definite relationship faux pas in the first few hours (see above), I’m betting the ‘shippers will be hovering around 42 for the majority of the first few hours.

What are you most excited about for BONES’ seventh season?

Yes. I agree with it all, after watching the episodes. 😀 They were fantastic!

  2. Emily on October 7th, 2011 6:39 pm

Thanks for having teases I wasn’t afraid to read!

  3. Liz on October 7th, 2011 7:57 pm

S6 killed my B&B shipping, on a scale of 1-10, how would you grade the cases? In the two episodes are there any Cam/Booth scenes?

  4. Drippan on October 7th, 2011 8:40 pm

    Marisa,

I’m glad to see your fangirl attitude has seemed to spring back to life after watching these two episodes.

My question is simple: How would you compare this to all the other seasons premieres? IMO, ‘The Pilot/Harbringer’ were the best and ‘Yanks/Mastadon’ were the worst.

Also, does it look like they have a pretty solid plan for how S7 will be played out? It seemed that S6 was pretty much played by ear with the only plan at the start was introducing an SO for Booth and the Brencentric episode. The mistake I saw was extending the SO storyline and pushing the Brencentric episode further into the season. It seemed that HH/SN were behind the 8 ball alot not knowing what their next move was. Even the B&B hookup in the last two episodes seemed like it was just thrown in there and not really planned out. I just like to know that they have an idea where they want to go and end up at by the finale.

Thanks for this Marisa. I have always enjoyed reading your articles on Bones mostly because you are the original fangirl reporter. I’m glad it seems you are very happy with the direction of the series now and looking forward to future articles from you.

I hope season seven ranks somewhere on the 1 to 10 scale. Season six ranked in at a 0 for me. I guess if they have a believable plan, they follow through with it, and it actually makes sense, almost anything has to be better than the atrocious mess that they threw together last season. I’m just hoping that the cases are somewhat interesting and it takes more than five minutes into the show before they give away who actually did the crime. I would just like to be able to enjoy this show again.

  6. E on October 8th, 2011 8:04 am

I think they are trying to “recover” from last seasons mess. I am glad that they are really moving forward. I would have rather that they dealt with the happenings of last season rather than skipping over everything with “some things are better left unsaid.:

Just curious as to all these positive threads on various sites (including this one)
and so few comments anywhere. Have they lost some of their “loud” fanbase.
HH may have lost some with his comments this past year.

Hope they bring back the balance in the show this year. I know I will notice the “less Emily” because Brennan is why I watch the show. I fully understand that is because she is pregnant. I look forward to the episodes when she is back in full next year. A wait and see after these episodes if they can even keep me interested.

  7. judson on October 8th, 2011 10:07 am

After reading your teaser (why is every question submitted via twitter?) and the comments here, I think I may be the only male who watches the show. Last season sucked, and I hope that this season isn’t all babies all the time. It seems like everytime a show has one of the lead female characters get pregnate, the show is doomed. Maybe all the women like it, but most of the guys …..audios.

  8. E on October 8th, 2011 11:22 am

Judson, evenas a female I agree with your assessment of last season. With Angela’ pregnancy taking all of last season, I really hope this season is not centered around the pregnancy. They may do it differently, but it is still a pregnancy. I really hope they balance things. The character of Angela was so different last year. She lost her edge. My hope is that they do not completely change Brennan like this either, They made Brennan look “clueless” and sometimes pathetic last season, in my eyes anyway. Pregnancy does change some women but I hope it is not drastic on Brennan’s part.

  9. CuriousHam on October 8th, 2011 11:51 am

Thanks for the teasers, did it appear Cam scenes were longer and had more meat than last saason?

  10. Barb on October 8th, 2011 7:50 pm

Thank you, Marisa. Just… thank you.

  11. Osteon on October 8th, 2011 10:06 pm

    Thank you, Marisa!

E, It is safe to say that Bones have lost AND gained some followers. But you cannot tell by just going to the different fora dedicated to Bones that the show has lost its followers – “loud” or not. One, These “loud” fanbase have expressed their excitement and anticipation and yes, skepticism (for the other end of the spectrum “loud” fanbase) for the up coming season through Twitter and Tumbler and not on those sites.

Two, Even when you compare hits/comments Bones articles get with the comments articles about other shows get on different entertainment sites/blogs, those Bones article almost always get the most number of replies.

Three, the online fanbase is not a representative of the entire Bones viewers.

  12. E on October 9th, 2011 9:47 am

I guess only time (and ratings) will tell. No way to determine what the delayed start and then the long hiatus will do to viewership.

  13. Drippan on October 10th, 2011 1:52 am

I agree that Bones’ fans are the most active fans on the internet. IMO, I think most of those fans want to forget S6 including the B&B hookup we did not see. Those same loyal fans also bared witness to how Hart Hanson treats the fans especially one comment made to one fan. IMO, when the producers did not show the B&B hookup or show them as a couple in the finale, they slapped almost every single fan in the face who has watched the series from the beginning. And, instead of taking the responsibility for that, they turn it around by calling their fans porno pervs.

I realize that Bones has made Hart Hanson a success. He is very fortunate to have this. What he forgot is what made Bones a success is the fans. IMO, Hart Hanson is one of those people who can not handle success. I’m afraid his narcissitic attitude added with this success has made him get out of hand. The problem is that these people usually peak followed by a very long plummet down. Just look at Britney Spears for an example of this or Charlie Sheen last year.

  14. Osteon on October 10th, 2011 3:45 am

Drip, I don’t know what to think of you. I only hope it’s just your pain meds talking. You really must harbor this hatred for Hart Hanson. It’s one thing to criticize the show, But to bash Hart Hanson, take interviews out of context, manufacture stories about how has treated Marisa, and wish that Finder would tank over at The Lab, and to say that over and over again in almost all the sites that you go to when you personally do not know the person is not healthy, to say the least. Quit being vindictive.

  15. AJ on October 11th, 2011 3:01 pm

Osteon, Before you bash any fan (ex- or otherwise) who take the time to comment you need to watch and read more of HH and SN’s interviews. The fans posting here, including Drip and I have seen HH’s answer to a question posed by a fan named “Andrea” during the 2011 Paley Center interview sessions. I strongly sufggest you go watch that before you bash us. HH was an ass, plain and simple. “Andrea” asked a question about Booth- his relationships and what happened in season six and HH’s response was so passionate he truned red and came up off his chair a couple of times, he was animated and clearly didn’t give a crap what others thought on the stage with him. Emily and David were visably embarrassed. His reply was “Andrea Blow me,” the question was for David and he had to make an ass of himself and say- “David, tell Andrea to just blow me”.

It was David that saved what could be salvaged out of that whole segment of the Q&A session at the Paley Center. As a fan from day one of the show Bones I was APPAULED at his remarks and the arrogance he displayed. He thinks he is above his fans, and quite frankly that he must not need them. I as a fan have the same questions about the bumbling around with the characters from season six. It was painful to watch, a horrible season. I have every intent of attending a Q&A where HH and SN are available to give them alittle of what they dished out. I have first amendment rights to say what ever I wish too. And they need to hear it.

  16. Osteon on October 13th, 2011 1:15 am

AJ, Oh I took the time to watch the video. I knew of what happened even before it even came out on video. I know of some people who were actually at the Paley and they sure had different opinions on what happened — shocked and amused, displeased, but never to the point that they had to attack HH after that incident. As for the reaction of the stars at the interview, I do not know with you, but I think that there is a difference between being at an awkward situation and trying to move on from there (which I think what David and Emily felt) versus being embarrassed. While HH’s comment may be uncalled for, it is understandable. And that single incident is not a reason enough for me to call him narcissistic and other awful adjectives because I do not personally know him as a person.

As I said in my earlier post, “it’s one thing to criticize the show, but to bash Hart Hanson, take interviews out of context, manufacture stories about how has treated Marisa, and wish that Finder would tank over at The Lab, and to say that over and over again in almost all the sites that you go to when you personally do not know the person is not healthy.” If you are active at The Lab, I’m sure you are well aware of the things Drip has been posting there.

  17. Emma on October 15th, 2011 12:59 pm

I’ve seen nearly every single episode but I don’t know what these ‘shippers” are in the last question? Really excited for S7!!!!

  18. Joanna on October 15th, 2011 1:17 pm

HOW are any of you getting episodes?!?!? I want in!!! If ANY ONE has a secret you’d BETTER tell me!!!!

  19. Lorraine on October 15th, 2011 1:24 pm

Yes, please someone explain the ” shippers”. What does the term in reference to??

  20. Cherie on October 15th, 2011 2:32 pm

I would love to see more of Caroline and Sweets is definitely a plus to this group.

  21. Jenna on October 15th, 2011 2:41 pm

Thanks so much for the teases – I actually only faithfully watch one show anymore (Even my previously beloved Big Bang seems to have faded – if I catch it, cool, if I miss it… eh, no big.) and have been more nervous about how the whole B/B relationship finally plays out ever since the end of last season. Seriously, a grown woman should not be so consumed by fictional characters. It’s gotten so bad I actually have tracked down knitting patterns based off of kit worn by the actors on the show and am even using screengrabs to pull together dress patterns for my own closet. It’s sad. I was afraid to read, I hate full blown “This is exactly what happens” surprise busters… this was just perfect. Enough to keep me bouncing in my seat in anticipation – NOT so much I start obsessing over issues and storyline. Thanks – you made a cruddy day (my husband gave me the flu for my birthday on Tuesday, and we’re only just starting to crawl out of the pit.) a bit brighter for this Bones nerd.

  22. Georgina on October 15th, 2011 4:40 pm

I love to see Bones. I wonder if Bones and Agent Brandon will ever have a wedding.

  23. mm on October 15th, 2011 5:25 pm

No way to reply to a certain post, but I’m surprised….’shippers’ as in ‘relationshippers’? I’m surprised someone online hasn’t heard of that LOL

  24. Excited on October 16th, 2011 1:38 pm

If the “something we’ve seen her do dozens of times before — but this time she includes her baby bump into the mix” thing involves the phrase “We don’t know what that means,” I will giggle with happiness!

  25. Drippan on October 17th, 2011 10:24 am

“One is a moment she shares with Booth and the other is something we’ve seen her do dozens of times before — but this time she includes her baby bump into the mix, which may have made me someone a little teary.”

Well, Marisa, the only guess I have towards the tear jerky moment is Brennan talking about her family and/or her mom. ED is so fantastic when she mentions her mom moments that it actually brings tears to my eyes. Her watching that video at the end of S2 ripped my heart out. I wouldn’t say they have had dozens of scenes like that but it sure seems like it because Emily just does a fantastic job that we replay them over and over again in our minds.

P.S. I’m refusing to start any debates about what is or isn’t correct for a person to say on here. It’s not the place even though I must correct one thing: I only post on The Lab and no where’s else as far as boards are concerned.

  26. Sarah on October 18th, 2011 4:26 am

Here, in France, the final episode of S6 was just broadcasted last week, and all I can say is that what gives me hope is the fact that I just can’t see how S7 could possibly be worse than this awful mess. 🙁
After watching the S6 finale, I was so appaled that I took my S1 dvd and re-watched the Pilot episode… It made me want to cry !!! Cry on what they did to this show, and particularly to this amazing character that was Brennan. How could they turn S1 Brennan into this clueless, almost autistic woman ??? She was smart, strong, independant and beautiful. She kicked ass in any situations. They turned her into a pathetic character and even managed to hide Emily’s beautiful face under these awful bangs 🙁 This is so sad. I can’t really picture how a pregnancy is going to save something from this wreckage, but let’s hope… I’ve been a Bones fan since the first episode, and I once was an X-Files fan, so I think the appropriate line is “I want to believe”…

  27. Charly on October 18th, 2011 2:38 pm

I have also watched Bones from the very beginning. I agree last season was a mess, but I think that just maybe it was more about the characters evolving into a more mature group. Every show has it’s bad or not so good seasons, but sometimes I believe that it can eventually make the show grow and the characters more interesting. All people “real life” or actors in a particular show have to evolve and that can be hard to do. I also am just extremely glad that the B/B relationship finally got to where e1 wanted it to be. It took way to long for me and was quite irritating at times, but it DID finally happen and that is what the fans wanted. I agree we “missed out on the acual hook up”, not the sex, but the acceptance of Brennan finally allowing herself to be with Booth in an intimate way, was disappointing to me. I wanted to see the tenderness between the two. I’m excited for the new season and cannot wait to see how it turns out. Like e1 else, I’m hoping for a season that has interesting cases along with the B/B and Angela/Hodgins characters. Let’s hope there is a LOT more of Caroline in this season, she is great and adds so much to the show.

  28. Mandy on October 19th, 2011 8:58 pm

WHAT ABOUT ZAC???? IS HE EVER COMING BACK!!! i know he did a terrible thing in the first season, but like he said he didnt put the knife into the man he only told the killer where he was

  29. Sarah on October 20th, 2011 8:46 am

Yes Caroline indeed brings a lot to the show, and let’s hope there’s more of here in S7. Regarding Zack, I’m afraid they won’t be bringing him back, though I don’t know why… Honestly, I never understood why they felt the urge to get rid of this character, who was absolutely brilliant and brought a excellent counterpoint to Brennan, as HE was the super-smart-but-semi-autistic character in the picture.
I think that the show actually started going downward when Zack disappeared. Although, from my point of view, it really jumped the shark when Brennan started saying she wanted a baby from Booth, and then they came up with this totally unbelievable brain tumor and alternate universe story, and that was it. 🙁
Charly, I understand what you mean, but for me, this is not character evolution, this is just not the same show anymore.

  30. rachel on March 15th, 2012 6:55 am

i love the way that they were not together and now they will be having a pretty little girl. which i think they shoudl call ruth.

i think that brennan and booth could also get married because it will complete the whole family.
