ROOKIE BLUE’s Gregory Smith on His Directing Debut: ‘It Was Really a Dream Come True’
August 23, 2012 by Marisa Roffman
For Gregory Smith (Dov), tonight’s episode of ROOKIE BLUE is extra special for him — he directed the hour!
“It was amazing,” he told me of his experience behind the camera. “I loved it. It was really a dream come true.”
Making the experience even more delightful? His ROOKIE BLUE costars.
“They were all warning me, ‘Just so you know, we’re going to be really difficult for you,'” Smith said of his castmates’ pre-filming teasing. “But once we were actually shooting, they were just a dream. I would not have gotten through it without them. They’re so supportive and made the experience really, really special.”
But of course not everything could go exactly as planned. When a director shoots an episode, traditionally they’re busy the week or so prior to filming so they can properly prep it. Unfortunately, while Smith was supposed to be light in the previous episode so he could prep, things ended up not working out that way.
“I was supposed to be [light in last week's episode]…but I ended up working every single day in the episode I was shooting while I was prepping [to direct tonight's episode],” Smith said. “So it was very stressful. I’d wake up early, go to set, have a couple of meetings, shoot all day, have a production meeting at lunch, shoot for the evening and then I’d go location scout in the dark at night. It was crazy but I loved it.”
And after all of that, would he direct again? “Oh, with pleasure,” he said with no hesitation.
ROOKIE BLUE airs tonight at 10 PM on ABC.
