BEN AND KATE Creator Dana Fox Teases ‘Bad Cop/Bad Cop’

October 2, 2012 by

BEN AND KATE is brand new tonight, and now that Ben is staying in town, he has a few issues with how his sister has been handling things in his absence.

“Kate has been lying about where they live to get Maddie into a better school system,” BEN AND KATE creator Dana Fox told me. “She’s saying they’re living at Tommy’s parents place, but Kate is a terrible, terrible liar, so she’s avoiding school, afraid she’s going to blow her cover. And Ben comes into this situation like, ‘This is insane. You can’t keep doing this. We’re going to go back to school night and charm the pants off these people so we can control the response to the situation. It’s crisis management 101.’ And she’s going, ‘No! Don’t mess it up! Don’t talk to anybody, don’t get me in there, I’m a terrible liar.’ And of course he gets her into that and they have to deal with it.”

And while the situation allows for some ridiculously hilarious moments for the siblings, it does also allow viewers to get another flashback into their younger years.

“We’re going to use [flashbacks] sparingly because we don’t want it to overstay its welcome,” Fox said. “So not every episode, but there are moments where we go, ‘Oh, this is an incredibly deep well we can draw from.’ We see Ben and Kate back in their old school they used to go to when they were little kids and now they’re there for Maddie. And we have this moment where we flash to them as little kids walking in the same door and then they’re walking in as adults and it completely slays me. I cry every time I see it, because it’s this really beautiful thing where they have this history together. And that is what having a sibling is like: you can drive each other crazy, you can stand toe-to-toe, you can scream at each other and get mad at each other, and then in two minutes it’s over because you love each other and you are each other’s hearts and souls. You’ve been there since the beginning for each other. So we are so using the flashbacks, but we’re using them sparingly.”

BEN AND KATE airs Tuesdays at 8:30 PM on Fox.

I didn’t the show would, but it has won me over. Ben and Kate is funny and charming overall, I think. I love Nat Faxon’s leading role. Working late at DISH though means I miss the show’s live airing, but my Hopper has me covered. It will record Ben and Kate for me automatically. I don’t have to remember to set reminders for any network prime time show thanks to the Hopper’s PrimeTime Anytime technology. I like the story so far, but I will say the story arcs are really clichéd and unoriginal.
