GOSSIP GIRL: Sara Goodman Talks Nate’s Quest for Gossip Girl, Rufus and Ivy, and More

October 15, 2012 by

We’ve got a brand new episode of GOSSIP GIRL tonight, and things are crazier than ever for our favorite Upper East Siders. So what are these crazy kids up to?

While a new romance will occupy Nate for a bit, there is still his lingering desire to unmask Gossip Girl. And according to executive producer Sara Goodman, that won’t be going away anytime soon.

“At the end of the first episode, he obviously traded that [information] for Serena,” she noted. “And Nate, of all the things we love Nate for, Nate is a man of his word. But the Gossip Girl [quest] is not quite over, yet. There will be something in the season about it.”

Ah, yes, the potential unmasking of Gossip Girl. Last May, executive producer Stephanie Savage brought up that revealing GG’s identity could have “larger implications to the franchise,” but whatever those were, they seemed to have been worked out.

“We were absolutely able to do it the way we wanted to,” Goodman said. “We were able to end the Gossip Girl story in exactly the way we intended.”

One thing that may not go the ways fans expected is the new…relationship…between Rufus and Ivy. (I know, it’s hard for me to write that out, too.)

“I know,” Goodman laughed, acknowledging the potential squeamish factor about the duo. “What I like about it is that it’s unexpected, but if you think about it, it really makes sense. Somebody said to me, ‘Why isn’t he with Vanessa?’ That’s more messed up! She was his son’s best friend! No, I think [Rufus and Ivy] makes sense. What I like about the season in terms of the multi-generational thing is what we try to do is build stories for those people that are also going to impact their kids and their kids’ interaction with each other and their kids’ interaction with them. Chuck and Bart are at war, and Lily is with Bart, it’s an interesting complication. Rufus, who [Lily] picked Bart over him, is with Ivy, who is trying to take Lily down. I think where we can go and where we end up with them, I think it’s going to be a fun ride.”

As for what else is going on in the episode, Blair has a big night as she prepares to debut her fashion line. And some interesting issues do arise with that.

“What we tried to do with all the characters and their external stories, in terms of her building her fashion line, is it’s going to cut to the heart of what Blair’s issues are — her own battles,” Goodman teased.

GOSSIP GIRL airs Mondays at 9 PM on The CW.
