ONCE UPON A TIME: Emilie de Ravin Teases ‘Lacey’ and the End of Season 2

April 19, 2013 by

ONCE UPON A TIME has been off the air for all of April so far, but the series returns on Sunday in a big way: with Belle taking on a new, magic-induced persona, Lacey!

To get some details about what kind of things fans can expect from Lacey, I spoke with ONCE UPON A TIME star Emilie de Ravin (Belle/Lacey) about her big episode, and what’s to come…

What can you say about getting to play Lacey?
Emilie de Ravin: I think, for me, it’s another really fun challenge in a really cool show. She’s nothing like Belle, past or present, in any way. Lacey’s more inclined to order french fries and like a double Jack on the rocks. And Belle would have a yogurt and a cup of tea. Lacey is by no means a crass, unkind person. She’s just a very free-spirited, happy to be in the little town, doesn’t crave adventure, very comfortable in her own skin, wears what she wants. Scantily clad? Yeah. But she doesn’t do it in an overt way to attract people, I think that’s just her personality and how she feels comfortable. But she’s a lot of fun, and it’s more important to her than experiencing other outside activities in life.

What’s the town’s reaction to Lacey?
EDR: Confusion. Just mainly confusion. But then again, everyone understands. But there’s probably not too much — they’re very, very confused — but the interaction is mainly between Lacey and Gold, because obviously Regina gave me these fake memories to get back at Gold once again. She thinks there’s no way I’ll fall in love with him, and for him to get me back to Belle with a kiss or however he plans to do that. So it’s quite sad for him. But he does a decent job. But she ends up having a bit of a thing for him.

How far is Gold wiling to go to get Belle’s memories restored?
EDR: I think within the realms of decency, really anything. She’s the only person he’s ever really been intimate with, telling her things that he’s never told people before; letting his guard down, with her emotional support. And he’s now, out-of-the-blue, without [any] of that. He got used to being with her, and her being a part of him. And he’s feeling a little lost.

In the flashbacks of this week’s episode, Belle encounters Robin Hood. What is that relationship like?
EDR: Well, I believe this is the first time she’s met Robin Hood. It’s a fun episode for him, too. We have a nice scene together. [Rumple] hasn’t been very nice to him, because he tried to steal something from him, and in true Rumpelstiltskin style, does a bit of damage; ties him up and stuff. I end up freeing him, so I guess they’re allies there, in that sense.

Is there a chance we’ll see Robin Hood in present day Storybrooke?
EDR: You can watch and find out. That’s my LOST[-style] comment. [Laughs]

Totally fair! What can you tease about the final episodes, especially as the series heads over to Neverland?
EDR: We all come together for a few different reasons over the last three episodes. Obviously, true to this [show] and the finale, there’s a lot going. You’re going to learn a lot about people, a lot about where the show is headed for — hopefully — next season. And that’s kind of all I can say. We do see a large ship again.

Interesting. Whether or not Belle gets her memories back, what kind of moments can you tease are coming for her and Rumple?
EDR: She’s the love of his bloody life, they’ve gone through Hell together. I guess that’s what love is. [Laughs] It’s not that easy. He’s doing everything in his power, and…there are a lot of really beautiful moments I think the “Rumbelle” fans will really enjoy.

ONCE UPON A TIME airs Sundays at 8 PM on ABC.

Great interview; Belle is one of my favorite characters on Once Upon A Time, so it’s interesting to hear Emilie de Ravin’s thoughts about Belle’s new personality, and how Robin Hood’s new character will be introduced. Unfortunately I probably won’t be able to see Lacey or Robin Hood right away because I work at DISH when Once Upon A Time airs, but I’ll catch up with the show on my DVR. I have the DISH Hopper, which auto-records Once Upon A Time and everything else on ABC during primetime, so it will be easy for me to keep up with Belle and Robin Hood even if I forget to set a timer for the show.
