SCANDAL: Guillermo Diaz on the ‘Fierce Loyalty’ at Pope & Associates, Another Huck Flashback, and More

August 8, 2013 by

As SCANDAL exploded in popularity last season, it became very apparent that due to the “WTF is going on?!” nature of the show — and how drastically the storylines could alter from one episode to the next — there was very little the actors could actually tease about what was to come without giving away too much spoilery goodness.

So it’s no surprise that when I caught up with SCANDAL star Guillermo Diaz (Huck) earlier this week, he was mum about how his character would handle Olivia being outed as the President’s mistress when the show resumes for season 3.

“I can’t really say how he’s handling it, because that would be revealing too much,” teased Diaz. “They still have that fierce loyalty to each other. He’s not judging anybody; he’s not judging her or anybody else. That’s the great thing about Pope & Associates: they’ve all done really bad things and really great things, and none of them are in a place to judge, and they’re all in it together. They all have each other’s backs.”

However, Diaz was able to share that season 3 will once again dive into Huck’s past…and he’ll be dealing with the ramifications of enabling Quinn’s newfound love of torture.

“We’re going to see a flashback episode with Huck,” Diaz said. “So we’re going to see more homeless Huck. And we’re going to get more information about what his relationship was like with Olivia in the past. That’s really exciting. We’re going to see Huck struggling that he feels like he created a monster with Quinn. She’s really liking this torture thing, and Huck is feeling like, ‘What have I done? Can I fix this? Is she going to be able to come back from the dark world that I taught her, that I’ve opened up to her?’ And that’s what he’s dealing with in the first few episodes.”

But will diving back into Huck’s past perhaps lead him to his wife, Kim (played by Jasika Nicole), and son…whom he isn’t quite sure are truly real?

“I have no idea; we only know what we’re shooting,” Diaz explained. “We’re shooting episode two right now. I would hope so. I would love that. And I think the audience would love that. They’re constantly asking me [if Nicole will return]. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t at some point.”

In the meantime, Diaz admitted he does wonder what Huck’s (eventual) reunion with his family might be like.

“For them to interact in the present, oh, that would be exciting,” he said. “I do [think about the reunion]. And it makes me excited…I just feel so blessed to be able to play all these situations on this show that [SCANDAL creator] Shonda Rhimes is writing. As an actor, it’s such a dream, I’m so fortunate.”

SCANDAL returns Thursday, October 3rd, at 10 PM on ABC.
