ALMOST HUMAN: Minka Kelly Teases Valerie’s Secret

ALMOST HUMAN has introduced viewers to a host of new technology and concepts in 2048, and in the promo for this Monday’s brand new episode, the show dropped the tease that Minka Kelly’s Valerie is a chrome.

But, um, what the heck does that mean?!

“She’s a chrome, which means she has a twin who we haven’t met yet,” Kelly teased to reporters late last year. “They’re opposites. So [Valerie] has an overwhelming amount of compassion and empathy, and that’s her gift in the precinct. And that how she’s able to connect to these criminals and get them to tell her their stories, because this far in the future, we’re all so used to texting and emailing – we’re all so robotic — that we have stopped connecting on a human, emotional level. Valerie still has that.”

“So that affects these criminals sometimes,” she continued. “When they’re connected to someone for the first time, it [hits] them and inspires them to tell her the truth. She’s also very smart, so she knows how to use that [to her advantage].”

But will she able to hold up as well when chromes are the ones being targeted? We’ll have to tune in to Monday’s hour, “Perception,” to find out…

ALMOST HUMAN airs Mondays at 8 PM on Fox.

I was taken by surprise there – I thought Valerie being genetically enhanced was the long and short of her secret! It makes me very curious about how chrome children are “made.” Based on Ms Kelly’s statement, chromes are never just one. It kinda reminds me of the multiple births as a result of in vitro fertilization. If she’s half of a twin pair, then the “Blood Brothers” episode makes even greater sense from the standpoint of her character. I wonder, though, if it’s an identical/natural or twin by artificiality? Given that there’s manipulation involved, is it possible for her to share genetic characteristics with a different person, someone who’s not kin, like being head and tail of coin? Or alternate selves (Fringe!) in the context of the AH universe?! The show got even more fascinating! If we’re going to get more of these exciting stories, this show deserves to continue. After a slew of strategic misfires (I lost count of those already, and like many others, I could go on and on and on about them), FOX has to do at least one thing right – quit the show favoritism and build up shows with actual long-term potential like AH.

Wow, I would have never guessed that was what Minka was going for in this role. She almost always has some kind of smile or grin on her face when talking with suspects and victims and I find her to be standoffish, not compassionate and definitely not empathetic. I figured Valerie’s secret wasn’t that she was genetically enhanced and had a twin; I thought she was going to turn out to be another type of android just because her reactions to what victims/suspects are always so off to me. Minka’s working with such a fantastic group of actors on this show, so hopefully some of their talent will rub off on her eventually.

I just cannot watch this show anymore, tonight I had to switch it over five minutes in, Minka Kelly has to be the worst, most annoying “actress” and I use the word loosely, ever….. how she got this part is beyond me, she is wooden, has no range whatever, her only expression is smug, and is totally unbelievable as a Detective, can you imagine her in Police Academy, being a cop on the beat, she would be stopping to see if her hair was in face and checking her makeup. It is a pity because I am a fan of Karl Urban and the show has shown a lot of promise…. time to get rid of her please!!
