ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK at PaleyFest 2014: The Cast Teases Season 2

March 15, 2014 by

We have less than three months until ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK season 2 is released on Netflix, and when the cast and creative team was honored at PaleyFest 2014 on Friday night, they had a few things they were able to tease about the upcoming season during the panel…

  • Laura Prepon (Alex) on the fan reaction to the news that she wouldn’t be in every episode of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK season 2: “It was completely overwhelming and amazing…I love [OITNB creator] Jenji [Kohan] and these girls, and my character is such a badass. When there was a bit of the scheduling [situation], I felt the love from the fans.”
  • Where does Jason Biggs (Larry) fit into season 2? “When we left Larry and Piper in season 1, their relationship was precarious at best,” Biggs pointed out. “For Larry, season 2 is pretty much spent figuring out if the damage has been done to the relationship is irreparable, or if there is something that they can mend there. They really love each other. I really believe that. Larry sees and craves something in Piper he doesn’t have — and vice versa — they’re whole when they’re together…for me, there’s something there. I think it’s hard for him to just give up on it.”
  • There’s a new woman in jail next season, and it seems like Vee will be shaking things up. “Kudos to Jenji for one of the most complex characters I’ve ever played, and possibly one of the most difficult characters I’ve ever played,” Lorraine Toussaint (Vee) shared. “Because to play her, I have to let my shadow-self drive the car for six months. She’s a complex, interesting character that interacts with all of [the original] characters. She’s not afraid of intimacy…I play a streetwise drug dealer who runs children…Honestly, it will be interesting to see how this character is received, because Jenji has written a character that plays and enjoys the game. She’s incredibly engaging and draws people into her. I had a great deal of fun.”
  • Backstories we’ll get in season 2, per Kohan, include Lorna, Vee, the nun, Taystee, and Ms. Rosa.

And before the panel, I caught up with ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK stars Danielle Brooks (Taystee), Yael Stone (Lorna), and Laverne Cox (Sophia) to see what they could share about the upcoming season…
