After months off the air, THE MINDY PROJECT is back tonight with back-to-back episodes that kick off the sophomore year’s final eight episodes.

“The great thing about coming back and having eight episodes, basically in a row, starting with the two that are going to air [tonight], is that pushing off from the big kiss in the last episode we aired, we knew we were going to have exactly eight episodes to play with the fallout of that moment,” THE MINDY PROJECT showrunner Matt Warburton pointed out. “And starting [tonight] it’s the first act of that eight episode mini-series that tell the ups and downs of the crazy fallout from this one moment that our fans have been waiting for.”

Because the Danny/Mindy kiss was a moment many fans had been waiting a long time to witness, the writers debated whether the show should pick up immediately in the aftermath of the kiss or if there should be a time jump.

“Yes, we had a lot of discussion about that,” Warburton admitted. “There is a little bit of playing with time…ultimately, we figured people have been waiting weeks to find out what happened, so we decided to pick up exactly where the kiss leaves off.”

And yes, the writers were monitoring what viewers thought of the Mindy/Danny kiss when “The Desert” aired in January.

“We were making the last set of episodes when that episode aired, so when that episode aired on the east coast and the west coast, we were just huddled around the computer,” Warburton recalled. “Mindy [Kaling (Mindy)] was on her lunch break from shooting, and we were in the writers’ room [looking at reactions]. We were so thrilled for the most part people were very excited about it. Because we went back and forth about it. But ultimately, our decision was we had done so many half-steps about [that relationship] that we needed to just prove to the audience we were serious about it. So we were very glad people were happy about it.”

But while Mindy and Danny’s potential relationship will play a big part in the first two episodes of this mini-series, Warburton pointed to another aspect — that has gone relatively unspoiled — that he’s excited to see the reaction to.

“I’m really excited for [viewers] to see Mindy and Bill Hader (Tom)’s performance in ‘Indian BBW,'” Warburton laughed. “That may be the single thing I’m most excited about. A lot of stuff has leaked out, but that has been kind of kept secret, so I’m excited for people to see that.”

THE MINDY PROJECT returns with back-to-back episodes tonight at 9 PM on Fox.
