Night two of premiere week! Let’s discuss THE VOICE, FBI, LETHAL WEAPON, and NEW AMSTERDAM…

THE VOICE: The second night of auditions were OK, but not stop-everything incredible? DeAndre Nico, a four-chair turn who ended up on Team Adam, was the best of the night, but it was hard to follow up on the strong batch of contestants in the premiere.

FBI: The pilot is a very solid procedural, and it helps that the cast is stellar (including ROOKIE BLUE‘s Missy Peregrym and Jeremy Sisto). I’m curious to see a few things: A) How much the show stays with its case of the week format/if a larger mythology develops; B) How new addition Sela Ward factors into the series; and C) How the showrunner shift impacts the show. (Co-creator Craig Turk left the series; PERSON OF INTEREST’s Greg Plageman is now running the series.)

LETHAL WEAPON: It’s never fun when the behind-the-scenes drama on a show becomes so public that it’s impossible to watch an episode without it coming to mind. Certainly Clayne Crawford’s uncomfortable departure from the Fox buddy-dramedy falls in that category.

What makes the casting change extra complicated is that Crawford’s on-screen dynamic with Damon Wayans was part of what really made LETHAL WEAPON work. Seann William Scott is a fun addition so far, but it’ll be interesting to see how the show works when it’s focusing more on the partner dynamic versus introducing his Cole.

(Also, on a purely technical standpoint, that chase in downtown LA was bonkers, and I can’t imagine the nightmare of filming that sequence.)

NEW AMSTERDAM: I find I’m generally a bit picky when it comes to medical shows. Bad boy/girl doctors who are obnoxious and make mistakes while doing their job doesn’t do it for me. I was very into HOUSE when that show was on, but I honestly don’t know if I’d feel the same way if I was watching it for the first time in 2018. NEW AMSTERDAM feels vague-ly HOUSEian. Yes, the doctor wants to do good (and has way more power) and isn’t quite as blatantly aggressive/hostile to everyone. There’s just a very thin line a show like this can walk without it being totally exhausting. That being said: the set is gorgeous.
